I leave from Manchester in a few days for Bruges, Ghent, and Paris. My questions concern how best to bring quasi-necessities in carry on, vegan food, beer, and activities. Do you know much about these places and these questions? You can probably help me out. More specific questions inside. [more inside]
What is the best city in Western Europe in which to spend Christmas? My spouse and I have decided to spend Christmas and New Year's in Europe! We will be going to Athens for New Year's Eve, but we aren't sure where we should spend Christmas, and the days leading up to it. [more inside]
In Paris with new husband, atrocious French skills. Haven't seen my Brit sister in over 15 years and she booked us hotel in Deauville-Trouville to meet tomorrow, 15 June. All I know is the train leaves from Gare St Lazare. The NCSF site requires Europe billing address so we couldn't buy ticket online, and train listings appear and disappear. We are getting frantic about what is happening. Train strike appears to be renewed, from what I can glean. Can anyone help?
Flat for entirety of June in Paris, with my British sister meeting me in Deauville for two days. I haven't left the USA since before 9/11, and my partner hasn't since he was a kid. I need ALL THE ADVICE: apps to help, other day trips, is Italy feasible sans car, June weather, language sites -- I am combing MeFi but am just overwhelmed, and fearful older content is out of date. Help! [more inside]
I can't believe I waited this long to ask the MeFi hive-mind, but here we are. In 24 hours my wife and I will be leaving on our honeymoon to the above-mentioned destinations. What I'm looking for are some cool, unusual, secret, or just plain "local favorite" things to do and places to go. Rather than simply pointing me to other sites offering collected reviews of places (tripadvisor, et al) I'm hoping to get some first-hand recommendations from you all. Time will be rather short in each city (3-4 days each) so let's try to stay within the cities themselves, as we won't really have time for outlying excursions. To give you an idea of what we're after, my wife and I are both lifetime members of the gothic subculture, and she in particular is very interested in fashion. Eccentric bars/pubs are also favorites. We leave on May 4th, but feel free to contribute later in the week, as I'll be eagerly checking this thread for your suggestions. Cheers, MeFi!
I am traveling to Europe this upcoming May and I am stuck on whether it is best to use a Eurail pass or buy point-to-point tickets. I know which dates I want to travel and my accommodation is all pre-booked. Are point-to-point tickets always more cost effective? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? [more inside]
Going on honeymoon in June to Paris. I have a friend who runs a business renting apartments in Paris for a month at a time, and he's just sent me the first two options. One costs 1390 Euro, the other 1250 Euro. Both are crazy good locations with crucial amenities like bathrooms. Is this about right, or should we ask for cheaper quotes? [more inside]
I am in the early planning stages of a trip to Paris and Brussels. I'd like to find a place between the two (or at least not too far out of the way) to spend two nights or so in the middle of the trip. I'd prefer a small, walkable town on the coast or with some kind of natural feature that you can just sit and stare at. Calais? Lille? Bologne-Sur-Mer?
I finally saved up enough flyer miles for a flight to Europe and I am super excited since I've never been. I'm planning on a week in London and then a week in Paris, advice for things to do while I'm there would be much appreciated. [more inside]
I will be in Berlin, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome, Marseilles and Paris this summer. I've never been to any of these places before. [more inside]
I’m currently based in Andalucía, Spain, teaching English for the school year, and am planning to visit neighboring France during Christmas vacation. France fascinates me and will be the first country I visit outside of Spain during my time in Europe, but to be honest: I know nothing. I have approximately 13 days to spend in the country, I would like to see Paris and a few other sites in the northwest, and I will probably enter the country on the Mediterranean coast (from Spain) and leave via the Basque Country (to return to Spain). What should I see? [more inside]
I have to be in Paris for an academic conference on May 31 to June 1st. On June 2nd, there's a marathon in Sauternes, which appears to be about 6-7 hours south-west of Paris by car. My question is (1) having never been to France, and never traveled around Europe except by train and since college, can I get from Paris to Sauternes in time to run the race at 8:30am the next morning realistically? And (2) can you help me logistically plan this ahead of time so that it minimizes risk of getting lost, missing the race, and spending a lot of money? I will be flying out of Paris, fyi, and haven't booked any flights yet.
Finding size 14 / 48.5 shoes in Europe filter: I'm in Paris and soon to be in Amsterdam. I need some shoes for traveling and normally I buy online to avoid exactly this problem of finding my size. Barring some miracle of someone knowing a place in one of these cities where I can for sure get something, what would be the European equivalent of Zappos.com where I could arrange pick-up as a shipping option? What should we realistically budget for a honeymoon in Paris? How low can we go and still have a good time? [more inside]
A colleague of mine is in Paris for work this weekend, and being a loyal Michigander, he needs to watch the Michigan-Michigan State football game on Saturday. I'm aware of the various options for streaming the game online, but are there any bars in the city that will be carrying it?

I'm having a hard time finding information about the agriculture and trash systems & practices in Europe. Basically I'd like to know where my food comes from and how waste is disposed of when living there. When I pick up a piece of produce from Portugal, I want to understand what that means. European disposable mobile phones: My parents, who are American, are going to Edinburgh, London & Paris later this week. They've asked me what I know about disposable/rentable phones since their phones won't work over there. I know nothing. So now I'm asking all of you: What do you know about good deals on disposable/rentable phones in the UK & France? (I believe they're looking to use the phones for a period of 7-10 days, and if it makes things simpler I think they are willing to do without during the French portion of the trip if necessary)
