Family Drama Filter: Help me distance myself from a parent

I've come to realize over the years that while I love my father, I am so different from him, and do not share his and his wife's (he is remarried) lifestyle and values and really wish I could come to accept it and completely distance myself from them. Please help me do this. [more inside]

How to interact with an unfamiliar new resident in my parents home?

A lovely, college-aged young woman who has had a very rough year is coming to live with my parents, whom I visit several times a year, often for extended periods of time (I live 900 miles away, but I'm a student with long vacations). I think this is great. However, I feel a little at sea for how to interact with her, and to prepare for this change, especially given the giant elephant in the room: the horrible event that happened which has caused her to need a new home. Hey old man take a look at my life, I'm nothing like you.

My recently retired father is consumed with anxiety that I am not married (or interested in dating at all, really) and constantly badgers me about it. If he only asked once and then stopped, that would be OK. But there is overwhelming judgment/criticism that something must be wrong with me and he seems to think this gives him the authority to tell me how to live my life. This has been going on for a while and, at this point, I am ready to completely sever my relationship with him due to the constant badgering. How can I talk to him about this? [more inside]

Dad, please stop beating a dead horse.

I am a paralegal. No matter what I say, my father continually reminds me that if I went to law school I would have a better job, make more money, etc. If I say anything remotely intelligent, he automatically responds, "See, you should go to law school." Please help me make him understand that I don't want to go back to school, and his nonstop pestering only makes me feel stupid and inadequate. [more inside]

Rules for a Parent in a New Relationship?

It's been almost three years since my mother died, and my father has slowly been working himself back into seeing new people, but it's starting to cause major family drama. To make matters worse, the latest person he's seeing is my sister's favorite teacher from school. What can my dad do to ease this transition for my sister? What do both people deserve here?
