I planted a number of native (to Michigan) white pine trees only to see them bedeviled by evil weevils. Specifically, the cause of the damage is white pine weevils and 100% of my trees were affected. Two part question: first, what are tried and true "natural" methods for controlling this pest, and second, what are its most effective pesticides, placing a high importance on minimizing collateral damage to people, flora, and fauna? So there is a local myth in my part of the US (New Mexico) -- usually told by the hispanic people whose families lived in the region for ages -- that centipedes burrow into your skin and live parasitically, and that if not caught they will get all the way into your heart and eat it. Any idea what these people are talking about? [more inside]

I'm a lover of seafood. So much so that I eat fish almost daily. Lately, I've been consuming a lot of smoked salmon -- the packaged ("ready-to-eat") kind that you find in the frozen food section of grocery stores. However, today as I was going through one package of smoked trout, I spotted several white dots buried in the flesh of several of the slices. These small white dots (approx. 1mm in diameter) were mostly concentrated on the edge of the trout slices, although there were a few white dots in the middle of the slices too. [more inside]
Here's a picture. Found on the head. Have been checked for headlice professionally very carefully and given the all clear... but still some itching and finding this which looks like an egg. Scale is about 1/3 of a millimetre. What do you think it is? They're egg shaped. Just a fatty deposit? I have the feeling like I need to scratch. Could be imagining it?
Cats suffering from blood in poop, diarrhea, vomiting for the past month. Vets keep telling me there's nothing wrong, all of their treatment suggestions haven't worked. Can't keep spending money on vets, please advise. Cat poop discussion inside! [more inside]

[Grossness warning] I accidentally ate food that was tainted with a small amount of feces. I am concerned about parasites. How do I take care of the fallout, and what are my best human deworming options? Everything I can find on this topic (information and, annoyingly, worming tablets too) seems to be geared towards deworming dogs, cats, and horses. [more inside]
My two kittens have ear mites, for which they were treated today at the vet, by the vet, with Revolution. They also received their first vaccines today. This evening, one of them coughed up a two inch thin, worm-like thing which scared the crap out of me as it coiled up around itself. Is the worm perhaps die-off from the Revolution? [more inside]

After my six-year-old read What's Eating You?, a kid's book about parasites, we had the question: Which animal has the most recursive number of parasites, and how many levels deep can it go?

I am seeking science-based answers (i.e., not dubious factoids passed along from one food blogger to the next) to the following questions: When making gravlax, 1) at what temperature and for how long must it be frozen in order to kill parasites, and 2) what is the risk of consuming gravlax that has never been frozen, both in terms of likelihood of getting parasites and what they'll do to you. I'm looking for titles of any movies [besides Alien] that feature parasites attacking pets, humans or other animals. I can't recall any names but I definitely recall seeing hilarious ones from the 50's as a kid. Bonus for ones that are old [but still rentable from Netflix], cheesy and gross [in a somewhat humorous way]
