when is the yankess parade

If/when the Yankees win the World Series, when will the parade that shuts down the city be? I have two business meetings on Monday in separate parts of town and I'd rather reschedule if the parade is going on. Are their specific times, dates when this is likely to occur?

If they win tonight would it be Friday? If they tomorrow would it be Friday/Monday? If I need to get cross town should I give it up?

Note to baseball fans - I have no interest in the outcome of the game. Only the outcome of the parade - go Reds!

Where is the best place to watch the Rose Festival Parade this weekend? OK, Portland is the best place since that's where the parade is, but I mean specifically... Where are the best spots to watch from, and what time would I have to get there? Got any Grand Floral Parade watching tips?!?

Can you ID this wonderful vintage photo? Any info appreciated... Photographer, year, background story. I found it at a photodump site and there was no information attached. I would guess that it's the aftermath of a storm (or else the float is just grounded for normal reasons) during a Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but I have no idea. I'd love to see more photos from the photographer, though.

Fakers!

Is everyone in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade lip-syncing? I'm watching it and at least a few of the performers appeared to be blatantly lip-syncing. There was a boy-band just a minute ago that didn't even appear to be actually playing their instruments. Any ideas on how to find out if any of them are actually performing live, like...for real?

Lindy out in public in the 50's and 60's?

Where can I find a list of any of Charles Lindbergh's public appearances in the 1950's and 60's? I'm especially interested in whether he made any public appearances, speeches, or lectures in California during that time. I realize he was a very media-shy individual, but he was involved in various corporations and groups that would occasionally call for his presence. The more public the event, the better!

Thank you!

Cryptic jewish kids on parade...

I ran into a parade of children from our local Hebrew school today...what were they chanting? While out and about on errands today, I ran into a strange parade. At first I thought the Amish had made a break for it, given the long beards, sideburns, and bowler hats on the adult men in the parade, but it quickly became apparent that it was the kids from a local Hebrew school (plus teachers), carrying signs that read things like "Proud to be a Jew!" and chanting.

A bit of googling indicates that this was probably apropos of the holiday Lag BaOmer, which is apparently celebrated with children's activities and even parades. So, that mystery is solved. But, what I can't figure out is what the kids were chanting. They were saying "We don't want to wait for *some word that starts with M that I can't remember*! We want *that aforementioned word* now!" Whatever the word was, it was something that I had not heard before, about three or four syllables, and I think it began with "M." Help me askmefi! What didn't the Hebrew school kids want to wait for?!?!

A Mummerful New Year? Or not?

[PhillyFilter] Tell me what you know about the Mummers Parade on New Year's Day in Philly. Good times with the family or a day spent wishing you were home? We have 4 kids, ages 10 to 17, and live about an hour out of Philly, can take the train in, and make a day of checking out the Mummers Parade.

Previously on AskMe, it was suggested that the parade sums up the best and worst of Philly. So, is it worth the trip? Or should we stay home, drink cocoa and play Monopoly?

Is the Santa Monica Halloween parade my best option tonight?

In LA on business and wondering: Is the Santa Monica Halloween parade my best option? And if so where do I park? As always . . . Looking for some diversions tonight, not into dressing up or partying per se, but would love to costume watch. I'm not too familiar with LA, and Santa Monica blvd is not far from my hotel, but it's far enough that I will need to drive, so trying not to spend $ on parking. Or perhaps LA locals have a better alternative?

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, help me fulfill a childhood wish: Where are the best places on the route to stand? And how early should I get there? If it matters, I would be coming into New York from Bridgeport, Conn. that morning by train if possible, otherwise, by car.

Help me plan a parade!

Help me plan a parade! I'm in charge of planning a parade in Michigan next month, and I expect about 7,000 people to show up. Mostly teenage guys and their dads - think of this as a Boy Scout event but skewed five years older. I need to make this parade kickass, but there's some limitations:

- Nothing that offends parents. This is not a love parade.
- No cars on the parade route. But we have golf carts.
- We need a ride for a beauty queen. Too bad we can't have convertibles.
- We also need rides for six VIPs.
- We need some focus on the founding of our organization.

Besides the beauty queen we've got nothing incredible. What other awesome things could we put in this parade? How should we drive around our beauty queen and VIPs? How can we bring in history in a cool way? I'd also love to hear from people who have planned parades before.

No more purple dinosaur

Can you point me to video of police swarming the Barney balloon in the Macy's parade, knifing it to ribbons? Probably from 1997. The discussion of this year's troubles in the Macy's Parade reminded me of something my father told me (at the time) that he saw very briefly in the coverage of probably the 1997 balloon parade.
As I recall...
Due to wind, the police decided that the Barney balloon had become too dangerous and needed to come down pronto. So a brace of New York's Finest climbed up on it, cutting it open with their standard-issue knives, no doubt leaving hundreds of little children with a permanent distrust of the boys in blue. My father claimed to have seen about 3 seconds of this on TV.
Can you help me see it too? (And show my son, someday.)

The Gods Require Blood!

Help my students design a parade float based on the theme of Aztec human sacrifice. I am the faculty advisor for a student club at my university. For the Homecoming Parade in two weeks, they are designing a float based on the theme of human sacrifice. They want to dress up like Aztec priests, build an Aztec temple on the back of a pickup truck, and then ritually sacrifice the mascot of the opposing team, the Bulldogs. We need advice!

1. The priestly costumes. Any ideas how to make costumes like these? 1, 2, 3.

2. Buckets of Blood. The students want lots of gore. How do we make a fake human heart? There are plenty of recipes for fake blood on the internet, does anyone have a personal recommendation?

3. Spurting Blood: In a proper Aztec sacrifice, the chest is cut open and still-beating heart yanked out in two perfect motions. Of course, they want blood to spurt all the hell over. Do we use some kind of pumps? Pressurized balloons of blood?

4. Music. Is there some spooky Latin/Indian sounding music we should use?

5. Stealth and Misdirection. The powers that be might not like this plan, so the float needs to appear fairly innocuous until it is underway. I am thinking we have a banner across the truck that reads "Aztec Culture" with the "Culture" changing to "Sacrifice" after the parade officials are past. Any other ideas?

All other advice or observations welcome. We will be working on this for a couple weeks and will develop other questions that I will post in this thread. If they pull it off I will post pictures.

Parade costume building.

I want to build a long giant centipede costume for a parade, but am having trouble finding 'how-to' links. I've found lots of parade pictures & sites, but few costume/float building resources. I've gone back & forth between building it segment by segment, to building one long strip that can collapse for storage. I think I've settled on the one long piece. Know of any cheap sources for flexible tent poles sans the tent? Ideas? Links?
