There is an artist whose paintings
strongly remind me of someone else's
style. Within the realm of naive/folk art, which artist had a similar style or similar paintings? Something about the spareness of the trees, the lines of the houses, remind me strongly of... someone. Someone I would have seen in a museum or book, someone well known. [more inside]

There's an artwork on public display in my community that isn't labeled with the artist's name or the title of the piece, and I'd like to know more about it. The facility that has it on display doesn't have the information, so I'm hoping you could take a look at it (or just read my description) and tell me if you know more about it, or where I could find out who created it and what it is called. It's a rather unique piece, being a full-length overcoat that's been hardened/cast and mounted on a large canvas. The yellow floral pattern of the coat is seamlessly transferred to the background of the canvas. For a link to a phone-cam pic I took of it, click [more inside]

I have a couple small (approximately 3"x5" in) paintings that I picked up in a thrift store. Likely not worth much, but I like them and would like to find out more about them. Here is one

I'm trying to find the artist who made this painting
. I purchased the painting in Orta San Giulio, Italy, about 5 years ago.
The signature says "Bertocchi" although it may say "Beitocchi". The painting came in a larger frame, I think I spent about $200 for it, however it may have been slightly more.
Would like to get more works by this artist on this location.

Years ago I saw a painting in a newspaper with an accompanying article. I really liked the painting and made a vague mental note to look up more online but never actually did. As I recall, the painting was called something like "The Pioneers" and it was very detailed semi-futuristic buildings on the side of a cliff. I'd like to find it or the artist again. [more inside]

I am searching for the name of a painter. I am going to describe one painting I clearly remember. I saw these paintings when I was a child.
The book of his works had the same theme of monkeys and skeletons involved in everyday activities.
In the painting I remember, a skeleton (it may have been a couple) is in a bed with white sheets and leaning over to put out the light on a nightstand. There is a monkey or baboon sitting on the room's window sill.
The images are realistic bordering on illustrations.
This is all I have. And this is why I came to metafilter.
Thank you for your help.

On a deadline: Help me find the name of an amazing, bizarre, crude, disgusting artist whose childish paintings of people in extreme situations surrounded by thought/speech balloons/bubbles I saw in a Lower East Side gallery around 2010-2011. [more inside]

This is a screencap from an episode of the "Ray Bradbury Theater" series from the 1980's. I tried using the Google Goggles app on my phone, both with the picture on my TV and on my computer monitor, but it can't scan it all the way. When it does come close, it can identify it as some sort of iconography, but that's it. Does anybody have any idea who the artist might be, or the title of the painting itself? [more inside]

Artist trivia time! I love this painting!
Does anyone know who the artist is? It's a painting with a sculpture of similarly-shaped heads next to it...but I just saw it randomly online and haven't the first clue of who it might be. Has anyone seen anything like it before? (other than on Easter Island)

I am looking for the name of an artist that had a studio in NYC during 9/11. Their paintings were huge (7 to 10 feet high min) with a planet or part of a planet with great surface detail and high contrast - black or very dark background. The works were stunning. [more inside]

I live in Madison WI and am looking to move to a larger city, under the impression that being in a larger city will provide me with more exposure and greater opportunities. I was thinking of moving to the outskirts of Chicago because it's close to my family in Madison and I love it there. I also miss Denver CO where I was born, but am unsure what kind of an art community it has. Does anyone know what cities are best for making a living as an artist? I have a degree in illustration but am also trying to get into gallery shows as well if that helps. Thank you very much for any advice.

Could you tell me what's written on the back of my painting? The canvas is stretched and stapled onto wood, and there are some characters on it which I can't read. It's partially pen and partially marker. pen marker whole back

Suggestions for portrait painters in Vancouver or San Francisco? We're trying to find a painter to commission two portraits for an anniversary present. The painter should be within striking distance to either city and have portraits in their portfolio. And yes, we are generally thinking of paintings, but should you know of a fantastic photographer in the same vein, post it here too. [more inside]

A friend of mine, who lives in Dallas, is looking for somebody to paint a mural in her home. She needs advice on how to find an artist who has done this type of work before, and who can do a good job. Where should she be looking, and what questions should she be asking?
