Next week: how to rebuild the engine using household tools?

Someone (i.e., me) backed the family car into a parking meter a while back, causing a small dent and some cracking in the paint (photo 1, 2, 3). Body shops say this will cost about $600-650 to repair over two days (which is a hassle for my fiancée, who commutes by car). Dealer said over $1000! Main concern is rust, not the dent--this is a hand me down car from 1999. Can we make an acceptable fix ourselves? How? [more inside]

How can I preserve this flaking-paint, wood sign?

I have an old, painted wood sign (pics inside) that I'd love to hang in my house, but the paint is flaking very badly. Is there any way to keep it from deteriorating (at least enough that I don't end up with a pile of paint flakes on the floor) without doing a lot more damage? The (probably non-existent) monetary value of the sign is not of importance. Thanks! [more inside]

Need specific inspiration images for shabby chic bathroom.

I need inspiration for an impending South Florida master bathroom remodel. Why doesn't the paint touch the corners?

This recent post on MetaFilter on pour painting and this comment about how the paint, when poured slowly on to the top face of a cube, does not run down the corners of the cube, got me thinking about why it didn't ... but after a day thinking about viscous liquids I'm still completely stuck for a scientific explanation. Can anyone enlighten me?

Stuck indoors, how can I get a spray paint finish on glass object without dying form fumes?

I need to paint a bunch of glass candle holders, but don't want brush strokes and can only do this in my 1 bdrm apartment. I tried building a spray paint booth, but the fumes were intense and I still managed to get spray paint everywhere. Looking into airbrush or spray guns but they don't seem very safe for indoor use either. [more inside]
