My relative has chronic wrist pain from nerve damage. She already has a wrist wrap for work and things involving her hands. She says heat help her wrist feel better and has been putting her wrist under steam from a tea kettle. Is there a device made specifically for this purpose? What other methods and/or devices are there to help ease the pain in her wrist?
I am a woman in my mid-twenties with chronic back pain. How do I find a job suited to my lifestyle, and communicate about my pain without putting off employers? [more inside]
My dentist is in no hurry to deal with agonising pain - what to do? [more inside]
I have a high pain tolerance and have had multiple root canals in the past with no problems. Tuesday I had a root canal with a temporary filling and on Thursday my jaw around that tooth started to hurt. I don't think it's infected (no swelling, no smell or visible problems, plus my endodontist said he packed the tooth with antibiotics). But it hurts, a lot. Help! [more inside]
I have limited time to work out, so I want to push myself hard in the time I've got, and I don't mind enduring short-term discomfort -- but I don't want to ignore my body's warning signals. How can I tell the difference between "This hurts because it's making me stronger" and "this hurts because I'm doing damage to my body?" What kind of pain means I should stop a workout, and what kind of soreness afterwards means I pushed myself too hard? [more inside]
The other day I did something to seriously fuck up my right shoulder, since then I've had to keep it immobilized in a sling on doctors orders. Moving it around hurts like hell and I can't do much beyond typing on a laptop (I can't even use my desktop because it requires me lifting my arm above stomach level). [more inside]
Wednesday, my dentist filled a cavity in one of my bottom wisdom teeth, and then told me to get the other bottom wisdom tooth removed, instead of having him fill the cavity. The next day, I lost my job. Insurance runs out on the 29th, and the only appointment for an extraction I could get is the day before a second interview for a new job. Should I try to reschedule the extraction? [more inside]
So, I've always been big, somewhere between 180 to 200 pounds, at 5'5". I'm female. My thyroid quit on me about 2 years ago and it's been a struggle. I'm holding steady at 250 pounds. I'm not looking for weight loss tips. I'm looking for tips from people my size on how to make my life easier. [more inside]
Three days ago, I woke up with a tremendous pain in my shoulder. I had slept on my arm kind of funny and assumed that was the cause of it. I've been sort of babying it ever since, but every day it seems to be getting worse. [more inside]
I'm in my early 40s, female, weigh more than I should, walk regularly. Every once in a while (walking across the room or on a walk through the neighborhood), I will take a step and get a sharp pain in a joint that makes me gasp. On subsequent steps the joint will feel completely fine. [more inside]
I'm a woman and I have occasional pain in the area of my lower left back and what might be my left ovary and reproductive areas in general. I haven't gone to my doctor about it because the symptoms seem kind of vague, but darnit, it hurts. What information should I give her? (And do you have any ideas about what's going on?) [more inside]

Did you ever have acute sciatica which stopped you from standing, sitting, sleeping, walking, basically, doing anything? Do you not have that anymore? If so, please TELL ME YOUR STORY. Desperate and enquiring minds want to know how to cut through the BS of a million conflicting opinions. [more inside]
I've had some pain associated with running, and I'm wondering if it is worth the expense (time and money-wise) to visit a sports medicine clinic to resolve the problem. [more inside]
mrs. mmascolino had a dermatologist apply Cantharidin* to a very stubborn wart that she has right above her heel. The doctor suggested that it would hurt for 4 hours or so and to take some Acetaminophen. She is on her third round of drugs and it is 11+ hours since her dermatologist appointment and foot is still in a decent amount of pain. Is there anything we can do (ice, heat, etc.) that would help in the short term but wouldn't prevent the treatment from working? [more inside]
Have you had any success treating foot pain with acupuncture? Details inside. [more inside]
My 8-year-old cat is defensive when touched on the flanks on both sides. This is out of character for her and I interpret it as pain. Is this familiar to anyone? [more inside]
Whilst I wait for an MRI and a follow-up visit with my orthopedic doc, said doctor prescribed Gabapentin for nerve pain. First day on this drug has left me zombie-like and drowsy. I know YANMD, but, fellow mefites who've taken this drug: Will this get better? [more inside]
This is a probably a minor doctor issue, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if I should make a complaint or not. Mostly, I don't want to make a complaint if it would not be taken seriously. Content within. [more inside]
I have moderately severe pain in the proximal tendon area of my vastus medialis for about seven months. It manifests when I raise my leg in bent or straight position. Does anyone have suggestions for physio-therapeutic exercises or any other treatment? Thanks.
I had a minor cold about a week ago that has turned into a sinus infection (I think). The cold was pretty bad for a couple days, but then I was completely fine for 4 days. I'm having some nasal congestion, and swollen lymph nodes, but the worst problem is that I am getting this nasty headache whenever I'm on my feet/trying to do anything. No tiredness, no fever, no aches or chills. I've been getting these awful headaches for 3 or 4 days. I'm off work until Tuesday, but I'm worried that this won't be resolved by then, and am looking for any ideas to stop/lessen these headaches. [more inside]
I'm doing everything they say to heal and move on, to get your life together. I try to be as social as I can with good friends who understand the situation and am focusing as much energy into work and school. I'm afraid of burnout though and how to unravel these emotions when I'm lying awake at night and questioning if I did the right thing? [more inside]
In London for a couple weeks. New & painful sore throat. Does anyone routinely test for bacterial strep here? [more inside]
Posting on behalf of my partner, whose bad tooth has worsened: the crown's gone. They're experiencing a throbbing headache towards the back of their head, "behind the eyes." While the pain has been off-and-on for a while, the last two days have been tough to get through. As of today, they also have a combination of pain/stiffness in the back of their neck. [more inside]
I injured my elbow or forearm while bouldering (climbing at relatively short heights without a rope). I have never had an elbow or arm injury and need some advice on a) what I may have done and b) how to manage it while it heals. Main points: I have gone to a doctor, x-rays were taken, as expected the arm is not broken, nothing further was done at the doc's office. I think it was a purely rotational injury, not compressional. Plenty more details under the cut. [more inside]
I recently started a mix of walking and jogging for an hour a day, to help me lose weight. I'm about a hundred pounds overweight and until now have been pretty sedentary. Since I started walking and jogging, I've had aching, tight pains in my shins, ankles and heels. What could be causing this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening? [more inside]
When I have gone too long without eating, I tend to get a neck-ache, often also accompanied by a headache localized at my temple. Why is this? What's going on, physiologically? [more inside]

Asking for a friend: What's a good knee wrap for warmth and support? I've been treated for patella tendonosis. I'm a middle-aged man in Seattle. It doesn't get very cold here, but even below 50 degrees, my knee starts to ache. Looking for a way to keep the knee joint nice and warm, and extra support for the tendon. Thinking of buying this knee wrap. Anyone have first hand (first knee?) experience? You are not my doctor. You are not my physical therapist. My dog will be happier if I can take her for longer walks.
Having back surgery on Dec. 19th. Fusion of L5-S1 with bone from pelvis and some "hardware". Doc has been great with the exception of what I'm in for in terms of post-op pain and recovery. Basically, he's told me "it varies." I do know I'll be hospitalized for at least 2 nights. [more inside]
As I type this, I'm having to curb the urge to call friends and family and gush about how much I love them and how wonderful they are. I'm on 750mg of Percoset for an arthritis flare tonight. What is happening in my brain or body to cause these feelings? I'm always this way with any kind of Rx pain meds and I'm just curious. Thanks!

This has happened once or twice a year for a while. I'm asleep, and awake to find my leg (either one) feels really tight, strained and overtense, in the thigh and calf, like there are muscles there that are on the verge of ripping. It's very painful for a very short while - usually wakes me up screaming, and painful to walk on for an hour or two onwards, but then subsides during the day. [more inside]
I fell on the back of my head yesterday while playing kickball. I did the right thing and went to the ER, and got the all-clear: no concussion. I felt fine but headachey last night. Today I feel quite bad, and I'm not sure what I should be doing. Sporty-people, help? [more inside]
hey everyone. A short while back, I was in a phase where I was straining alot when I was peeing. I was being very OCD about emptying my bladder is what I'm saying. I did this until I started to feel a pain in my abdomen as well as an aching sensation in the right side of my head. I immediately stopped. While the pain in the abdomen went away, the headache persisted. Eventually I went to my MD and he didn't seem that worried about it and said it would go away. The head sensation sort of changes often. Sometimes it's a mild to moderate pain and sometimes it feels like sort of a cold feeling on the right side of my head if that makes sense. i wanted to get you guy's takes on this.
Other than having a bad mattress or sleeping in a weird position ... is there any potentially serious medical condition that would cause me to wake up every morning with pain in my lower right back/side? The pain wakes me up every morning (usually after about 6 hours of sleep). It goes away after I have been up and moving around for 30 minutes or so. Note: I do have a small tear in my rotator cuff - I'm wondering if I'm compensating for the shoulder issue and sleeping in a funny position?
I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot. I've read about it on the web, and it feels like either everyone else is understating the pain and mobility limitations or mine is much worse than everyone else. Help me manage my expectations for my recovery. [more inside]
YANMD. I've started having a new kind of back pain in the morning. Any thoughts/tips? Details inside. [more inside]
My 79 year old dad fell and hit his head on the metal bathtub door runner 3 weeks ago. He was outside of the bathtub, fell backward, and hit the base of his skull on the right side. It is continuing to hurt at a level that makes him not want to take care of his basic needs beyond getting to the bathroom. I am working on getting home nursing and custodial services set up, though he's convinced that if he could just get the headache to go away, he wont need any of those services. What's the cause, what's the treatment? [more inside]
Over the past four or five months I've had pain and stiffness in my thumbs. It started in my right thumb (I'm right handed) and then I noticed it in my left as well. It now seems to be worse in my left - my left thumb hurts a bit more than my right and I can't bend it quite as far. What is likely to be causing this? [more inside]
You're not my doctor of course, but what could this be? I've been having a weird pain in my left arm all day. Details within.... [more inside]
I had a baby a few months ago, and all of the sudden I can't sleep through the night without having excruciating back pain. YANMD, but I have never had serious back pain before and don't know really know where to start. New mattress? Chiropractor? Physical therapy? Stop getting older? Some more details inside. 5 days ago, had general anesthesia lapropscopic surgery for salpingo oopherectomy (badly scarred right ovary and tube removed), appendectomy, D&C and exploratory surgery found massive adhesions and one intestinal cyst. *It* hurts at the end. I already seen two different doctors (GPs) twice each, but don't feel like I am getting answer I need. I'm looking for suggestions for what I should ask/tell my doctor in a couple days. YANMD, etc. Details follow. [more inside]
My father (age 79) has gone from keeping a cane in the car for occasional use to steady himself (through 2012) to being in terrible pain and needing a walker around the house (the latter after a Synvisc injection to the knee 2 weeks ago, knee swelling, and falling - again - at home alone). So far he hasn't broken anything in his falls, but I live 90 minutes away from him and he lives alone. He's accustomed to being quite active and has often been mistaken for a man 10-15 years his junior. [more inside]
I'm having serious neck and shoulder pain due to some combination of a bone spur in my cervical spine, a herniated disc and/or flexor joint arthritis. I have doctors. I'm getting physical therapy. Anyone have suggestions for dealing with the pain in the meantime? [more inside]
You are not my doctor. But you will probably spend more time thinking about what is wrong with me. What is wrong with me, anyway? I have an appointment January 4, should I go sooner. [more inside]
