(medfilter) asking for my girlfriend who's beginning to think she's crazy after the 2nd emergency room visit in less than a year where she's been told there's nothing wrong. Her primary complaint is stabbing pain on her right side, right at her ribcage. Sometimes radiating into her chest. Pain can go from annoying (most of the time) to debilitating. She states that she's had some kind of pain there for most of her adult life. I know you are not her doc but I'm hoping that the symptoms might ring a bell to someone.

My gf has a swollen puffy lump about 2.5" wide on the base of her spine, no discoloration or pain, it just appeared at the same time she got a sudden sharp stabbing pain in her right lower back - are these 2 things related, if so, can anyone tell us what it means?
Obviously we need to talk to the doctors, but she's been working with them for years and no one can tell us anything yet - we thought someone else might have some ideas?

I have many of the symptoms of Lupus, and my mother has the genetic defects that cause a number of autoimmune diseases including Celiac and Lupus. How do I go to my doctor and insist I get tested without her laughing me out of the office or convincing me otherwise that I don't have lupus? Also, I might be crazy. Obviously, YANA/MD

How do I deal with the fear of a painful medical test that I'm having in two weeks? The pain will be intense but short in duration, under 5 minutes. It's a simple procedure, done in the doctor's office, and afterwards I'll be able to do my normal activities and probably won't have any lingering sensations or discomfort. And yet, I'm having trouble summoning up the courage to go through with this, to the point where I'm becoming paralyzed with the fear. I would appreciate suggestions or anecdotes about how you overcame medical fear to do something you knew you had to do.

I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis a year ago. I am on Enbrel and it has helped a great deal with the pain I experienced in my arms and joints but I am still having really bad pain upon walking or standing in my low back, sacral joint areas...I swim and do a variety of stretches but it is not allowing me the recovery I long for. I use to walk a few miles everyday, hike on the weekends and I haven't been able to do that in a couple of years. I miss it! I have been reading up on Epidural Cortisone injections and I am curious about personal results people have had. I am interested in the good as well as the bad stories, so I can decide, after meeting with my Doctors, if I want to go through with it. In other words if the benefits outweigh the risks.

I snapped and bit my nails way too short after having kicked the habit for several months. Now all my fingertips are seriously painful. Is there any kind of ointment or something I can buy at a drug store to cut down on the pain?

In the past couple of years, whenever I go to certain movie theaters, after the show my knees hurt a little afterward. They also feel a little precarious, like the ligaments are stretched out and they might just decide to bend backwards. What do I need to do to ensure that I continue walking on my own for the next 50-60 years?

How can I get my mom to start smoking pot?
A few years ago my mother was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a chronic and very painful disease. I've thought a number of times that marijuana would be able to help soothe her muscle pain. After researching it, I found a lot of people with fibro do smoke and it helps tremendously. She's rather religious and not really open to new ideas. She's very into herbal solutions, but I know she'd turn down this particular herbal solution because of the hype of anti-drug commercials and its legal status in the US. Is there any way I can approach the subject which may convince her to at least try it? I want my mom to feel somewhat normal again and I believe this may be able to positively change her life.
