Debunking Dr John Sarno / TMS / Healing Back Pain

Can someone help me understand or explain why there seem to be so many people (including many on the green) who have claimed to have been helped by Dr Sarno's books and his whole 'TMS' diagnosis? I just read the book, and it seems like complete quackery, especially in his advice around herniated lumbar discs. What gives? [more inside]

I had a root canal Tuesday and am now traveling and in pain. Any advice?

I have a high pain tolerance and have had multiple root canals in the past with no problems. Tuesday I had a root canal with a temporary filling and on Thursday my jaw around that tooth started to hurt. I don't think it's infected (no swelling, no smell or visible problems, plus my endodontist said he packed the tooth with antibiotics). But it hurts, a lot. Help! [more inside]

It's a real pain in the...

Let us suppose that you have injured yourself. Perhaps you've (presumptively) torn your rotator cuff by falling out of bed. Let us further suppose that the area in which you live has a major prescription drug abuse problem, and it takes an act of God to get a prescription for opioid painkillers. Cortisone shot was two weeks ago. Tylenol and Advil point and laugh at your pain, but that's about it. How do you manage your pain? Medication, meditation, woo or not. YANAD. Are people really being mean to me? Or is this just in my head?

Lately I've not been wanting to deal with humans due to experiencing one too many situations lately where strangers I've had to deal with—in most cases cashiers—have talked to me like I'm some kind of laughing stock schmuck. I often tell myself that I don't care what people think of me, but when a string of people have seemingly mocked me in a very short amount of time, it really can do much to make me start thinking that, hey, maybe I am a shmuck after all. And the main reason it bothers me is because, well, I wouldn't mind making friends. And I worry that with so many people thinking I suck that this will prove to be difficult. [more inside]
