I desperately, desperately needed to go to the dentist, and when I went this morning I was scheduled for 1) a deep cleaning and 2) 5 cavity fillings. For the cleaning I'm told I can get a topical anesthetic and have it done in one appointment, or get an injection and have it done in two. I'd like to limit it to one appointment, as I'm already on the hook for two more for the cavities, so I was thinking: would it be a terrible idea to take a random painkiller (say, a norco or an oxy) that I have lying around before I go? I'm usually a tough guy about stuff like this, but after several years without going to the dentist, just the regular cleaning hurt like hell.
I had a minor cold about a week ago that has turned into a sinus infection (I think). The cold was pretty bad for a couple days, but then I was completely fine for 4 days. I'm having some nasal congestion, and swollen lymph nodes, but the worst problem is that I am getting this nasty headache whenever I'm on my feet/trying to do anything. No tiredness, no fever, no aches or chills. I've been getting these awful headaches for 3 or 4 days. I'm off work until Tuesday, but I'm worried that this won't be resolved by then, and am looking for any ideas to stop/lessen these headaches. [more inside]
You are not my doctor, but if anyone could possibly shed any light on what I've been dealing with for the past 2+ months it would be greatly appreciated. I'm a 38-year-old male and my symptoms appear to be urological in nature, but I'm not certain as to the root cause. I've visited three urologists, a chiropractor and a physiotherapist, but to no avail. [more inside]
Sufferers of headaches - what do you like/dislike when you're in the thick of it? A friend of mine has recurring headaches of unknown cause. They are on medication so the pain is manageable, but they live alone and often have to go to work (9-5 office job) in the middle of an episode. They live far away so I can't offer to pick up groceries for them or anything like that, but I can and do IM them words of comfort. What else am I missing?
I'm doing everything they say to heal and move on, to get your life together. I try to be as social as I can with good friends who understand the situation and am focusing as much energy into work and school. I'm afraid of burnout though and how to unravel these emotions when I'm lying awake at night and questioning if I did the right thing? [more inside]
I get stiffness and pain between my shoulder blades. This frequently occurs after meals, but it doesn't happen all of the time. I wonder if I might have some food sensitivity or other condition. What might cause this and what is it? Rheumatic and autoimmune diseases run in my family. Could that be related?
I have no idea what this is. It happens primarily when I sit cross-legged for more than 10 minutes at a time. (easy cross-legged position; no fancy lotus poses or anything) Only happens on my right leg no matter which leg I have in front of the other. [more inside]
I have some kind of stomach bug and so far pepto has been keeping it at bay but I'm nearing the maximum daily dose (every half hour up to 8 times in 24 hours). The nausea/stomach pain seems to still be creeping back each time after the half hour and I don't know what to do after my last dose. What do I do after my 8th dose if it comes back? Is it harmful to take any more? Is there an alternate medication I can switch over to?
I have a fairly painful toothache due to an exposed nerve that started a couple days ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't get in to see a dentist until next Tuesday, but the pain is definitely getting worse. I'm probably going to go to the campus clinic tomorrow to see if I can get some painkillers (and maybe antibiotics if they decide I need them), but are there any other ideas out there for dealing with tooth pain? I'm not a huge fan of taking opiates for longer than I need to (drowsiness, addictive potential, acetaminophen side effects, etc.), and I've found that the oral numbing gel is ineffective.
Lots of options out there. Anyone with similar symptoms want to respond? [more inside]
I've had a year of knee pain and I'm looking for any ideas or advice about what I can try myself or bring up with my doctors to fix it. [more inside]
The gum between two of my back teeth has been painfully inflamed since Friday, and in attempting to address it today I discovered that there's a rather sizable divot between the teeth that I can see when I use floss to push the infected gum down. I'm too young to have receding gums. My dentist is on vacation until my appointment with him next Thursday. What can/should I do in the interim? [more inside]
Earlier this year I was diagnosed with meralgia paresthetica in my left leg. I am currently having a flare-up. Please give me your experiences, tell me what causes your flare-ups, tell me what helps you. [more inside]
In horrible pain after root canal re-treatment today. What could be the cause? [more inside]
Did it help you? For how long? What was the procedure like and any recovery? Did you have unwanted side effects? What original condition was it ordered to treat? [more inside]
In London for a couple weeks. New & painful sore throat. Does anyone routinely test for bacterial strep here? [more inside]
I have persistent headaches, backaches, depression, and anxiety. I take Tylenol to alleviate both physical and emotional pain, but now it has become so habitual that I can't stop. I'm scared of what I'm doing to my health at this point and need advice on how to stop, and other alternatives I can take to relax enough to be able to function throughout my day. [more inside]
I have some data, it happens to be medically-oriented but that's probably not too important. How can I structure it? It appears to be intrinsically hierarchical, but the hierarchy can be organised in various ways. Is there a design pattern for this problem? [more inside]
I was diagnosed with bulging L4/L5 discs with spondylolysis and stenosis. Doctor convinced me to get epidural / facet injections. After the shots, I started getting very bad sciatica ( I think its sciatica ). I could hardly stand in the shower. Before the shots I was running half marathons. Now I can't run at all. I can't lift heavy things. Only walking makes it feel better. Its been six months with no improvement. The quality of my life is way worse than it was before. What happened post injection? Can anyone recommend a good back doctor / orthopedist in Austin?
For about as long as I can recall (roughly 30ish years) I've had an odd recurring pain in my collarbone area. What might this be, and has anyone else experienced anything similar? [more inside]

Looking for a cool (as in chilly), inexpensive, gel-like patch to replace Lidocaine patches for a child with nerve pain. [more inside]
Hi all, I had my first appointment with a pain management doctor last week that did not go well. I am curious about the legality of the contract that I was required to sign in order to receive care. [more inside]
I had pneumonia about four years ago in my left lung. Now it's bothering me again in the same spot, but I really don't think it's pneumonia this time. Help me relax until I can get in to see my doctor. [more inside]
Hi! I am in a lot of pain. You are not my doctor, but I was wondering if anyone has felt similar symptoms. This morning when I woke up, it seemed as if a very large spider was biting a very specific spot on my lower right leg, sort of below the calf but above the ankle, and in the front (pic of location of pain here). In terms of pain, it is 10/10. The pain lasts for 5-10 seconds, then fades away. Throughout the day, it has returned. [more inside]
I have had a knee problem for two/three years now. If I sit with my right knee bent for a long period of time the joint starts to hurt, not much at first, but the pain can become quite uncomfortable after a while. If I fully extend my leg my knee joint clicks, just like when you crack your knuckles, and the pain goes away. What is up with my knee? [more inside]
I currently have a ridiculous amount of pain in my throat (now for a week) with no other symptoms. Went to urgent care (while on vacation) a few days ago and was told I had a virus and to take ibuprofen and tylenol which doesn't seem to help at all. Can't see my primary doctor until tomorrow or maybe the next day. [more inside]
Posting on behalf of my partner, whose bad tooth has worsened: the crown's gone. They're experiencing a throbbing headache towards the back of their head, "behind the eyes." While the pain has been off-and-on for a while, the last two days have been tough to get through. As of today, they also have a combination of pain/stiffness in the back of their neck. [more inside]
I finally got health insurance after not having it for years. The problem is that it is my states crappy version of medicaid even though they won't admit it. It has already been a clusterfuck. Only 3 docs in my county accept this insurance. I have my first appt tomorrow and could use some advice on how to proceed. [more inside]
Repeatedly bleeding after penetrative sex, yes we use so much lube, any advice? [more inside]
A middle-aged female neighbor, Rachel, fell down a long flight of carpeted stairs yesterday while sleepwalking. She seems okay and says she's very fortunate as she hit everything several times including her head. They made the decision not to go to the hospital and we neighbors did our best to help. Today she's doing very well but we wonder from her description of a sharp pain upon landing whether she might have a fractured rib. I've already read this post about rib fracture. [more inside]
I injured my elbow or forearm while bouldering (climbing at relatively short heights without a rope). I have never had an elbow or arm injury and need some advice on a) what I may have done and b) how to manage it while it heals. Main points: I have gone to a doctor, x-rays were taken, as expected the arm is not broken, nothing further was done at the doc's office. I think it was a purely rotational injury, not compressional. Plenty more details under the cut. [more inside]
I just started running, and just started using a Total Gym for upper body workouts. Should running cause pain in the medial collateral ligament in your knees? What about in the tibalias anterior? (Not shin splint pain - I know that one well. This is more like a high ankle sprain.) Should lat pulldowns cause pain and stiffness in the side of your neck going down into your shoulder and trapezius? Or crunches cause low back pain? [more inside]

I have chronic crippling body pain that can strike at any time. I am doing all the things I can to learn to live with it and ease it when it strikes but I have a hard time being with people sometimes because I get snappy when I feel like they don't understand how much energy it takes. Now I have a new girlfriend and it is going to cause problems. Have you lived with pain and relationships? [more inside]
I've been having knee pain recently resulting from physical activity. Will it get better with time, or do I have to choose between accepting it and taking a long break? [more inside]
I recently started a mix of walking and jogging for an hour a day, to help me lose weight. I'm about a hundred pounds overweight and until now have been pretty sedentary. Since I started walking and jogging, I've had aching, tight pains in my shins, ankles and heels. What could be causing this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening? [more inside]
In a few days, I'm going on a several-week trip to Europe. Yesterday I noticed a small (quarter-sized) area to the right of my bellybutton that feels bruised, but has no mark. It doesn't hurt unless I press on it, and then it feels like a bruise. I figure if I had appendicitis or something I'd be in a lot more pain. Should I be worried about this at all?
I was referred to an oral surgeon by my local clinic that caters to low income folks like me. I have a major infection in a tooth that is crumbling and dying. I made an appt. with the oral surgeon and chose to have a local anesthetic for the exrtaction. [more inside]
I'm in my 20s and spend all my time working on the computer. I have this recurring pain in my upper left back (Trapezius) which always bothers me towards the middle of the work day. When I massage the area, it feels knotted and tough. [more inside]
Three years ago, I inherited a solid Biachi road bike from my dad. I'm pretty into it now. I usually bike 50 - 100 miles on the weekends, but as that number has crept up, I've run into some some fit issues. Maybe you can help me out with some conceptual stuff. [more inside]
I've been in chronic pain--rarely acute, but constant, flitting about different parts of my body--for years: diagnosis: early Fibro. In early spring, I started getting really bad headaches from clenching my teeth. Not the first time I've had the problem, but never before this intense and for this long. Then about a month ago, I developed lower-back/sciatic pain--again, I've had it before, but never so badly or for so long. The two things didn't overlap much, but they sort of drowned out my regular aches and pains. Now my back problem is clearing up, and I find myself in a panic about not being in pain anymore [more inside]
I recently took up running, but ramped up the distance pretty quickly and probably as a result have been having some ankle pain. I went to a sports doctor, who referred me to a physical therapist and also recommended that I buy superfeet or powerstep insoles (I went with powerstep). The following day I ran with them for the first time, and subsequently developed a nasty blister on my left foot. I NEVER have gotten a blister while running. My right foot feels very comfortable with the insole. I'm seeing the doctor again next week, but would like to continue running until then after my blister heals up a bit more. My question for my fellow running MeFites is... Is getting a big blister after one run with new insoles a sign of a bad fit? Or, could it be that the insole isn't properly broken in yet? (I heard that insoles need to be used for a while before they become comfortable, but... a blister after one run, with no prior history of getting them?? Is this not unusual?)
Despite all my efforts and success(!) in treating myself well and recovering, I feel like my anguish over this sexual assault that happened to me over a year ago still subtly manifests itself in many aspects of my life. And it is precisely the "subtle," diffuse nature of these symptoms that makes me uncertain as to how best to proceed. Details inside. [more inside]

IKYNMD - So a few years back I have a laminectomy, discectomy of S1, L2, L3, L4. I also have stenosis and scoliosis of the lower spine, with major issues in my neck due to everything being out of whack and balance. Also have degenerative disc disease all along the spine. So a few years after I had the first surgery, was told I needed to have an anterior cage to support my spine that was basically collapsing. I said no because of the fear factor. [more inside]
I've had a lot of pain in my lower back for the last five days or so. There's no obvious cause that I can think of but it seems to be getting worse, not better. It's at the point now where standing up is taxing, even after taking ibuprofen. Any suggestions? [more inside]
9.5/10 times, I struggle with talking to people, even my own friends and family. Even my own parents sometimes. As a result my life is a life of constant pain and loneliness, even when I am with my friends and family. I can't hold conversations because my mind is too blank to start one or add anything other than "yeah, uh-huh" to a preexisting conversation. Talking to people one on one is a constant nightmare because I am incapable of holding up my part of the conversation or starting one. As a result, I always feel very uncomfortable around one on one conversations and always fear being caught in one. [more inside]
