What are some good pain relieving tools for knitters?

One of my housemates is an active knitter and sometimes complains of aching hands. She's past retirement age and has a little onset of arthritis. I've found some fingerless lycra support gloves that claim to help with that sort of thing. Do any of our knitters have experience with these things, and if they do help, is there a good brand I should look at?

Pain in foot, why?

Over the past year I've developed a recurring pain in my left foot's big toe joint. It would appear for a few weeks, heal, and return several months later at regular intervals. I do rock climb and hike, but this does not seem to correlate with the pain. My other foot is normal. [more inside]

Help! How do I keep my bunions from getting worse?

i'm in my late 20s, and have had bunions my whole life, but just realized that's what they were & not just how my feet are shaped. I work on set (and so on my feet) for 14+ hours a day, often more, pushing heavy carts around and walking up and down hills. My feet hurt always, but especially at the end of the day and especially especially at the end of the week. [more inside]

How do you move beyond betrayal?

Hello metafilter, A few months back, I had a break-up with a friend. At the time, I believed we were very close, and I turned to her because I was very sick, needed help, and couldn't find it anywhere else. Instead of offering help or sympathy, she instead sent me a "go away till you're better" letter two days later. It's broken my heart, and I can't seem to move past it. [more inside]

Pain control methods for nerve and muscle pain?

1) Have you taken Cymbalta for nerve and/or muscle pain (or do you know about it)? How can I relieve RSI wrist pain when using a computer?

I've had RSI related pain in my right wrist (right side) now for over a year that's showed no sign of improvement. My work is all computer based (admin) and the software we used isn't very shortcut friendly, so I'm using the mouse all day. I've had to give up playing guitar (my favourite hobby) because it causes me too much pain to play. The pain is constant from the moment I wake up (around a 2-3) then gets worse throughout the day (up to about a 5) when I use my wrists. I'd love to take some time off to rest my wrist but I literally use it for everything. [more inside]

It's a real pain in the...

Let us suppose that you have injured yourself. Perhaps you've (presumptively) torn your rotator cuff by falling out of bed. Let us further suppose that the area in which you live has a major prescription drug abuse problem, and it takes an act of God to get a prescription for opioid painkillers. Cortisone shot was two weeks ago. Tylenol and Advil point and laugh at your pain, but that's about it. How do you manage your pain? Medication, meditation, woo or not. YANAD. Are people really being mean to me? Or is this just in my head?

Lately I've not been wanting to deal with humans due to experiencing one too many situations lately where strangers I've had to deal with—in most cases cashiers—have talked to me like I'm some kind of laughing stock schmuck. I often tell myself that I don't care what people think of me, but when a string of people have seemingly mocked me in a very short amount of time, it really can do much to make me start thinking that, hey, maybe I am a shmuck after all. And the main reason it bothers me is because, well, I wouldn't mind making friends. And I worry that with so many people thinking I suck that this will prove to be difficult. [more inside]
