What does it take to get a pagerank of 1?

What's required for a Google pagerank of 1? I'm stuck at 0 - does getting ranked increase traffic much? I've been operating a site for about a month now, I have a decent number of inbound links, many pages listed in Google but still a pagerank of 0. I've heard it can take time to get ranked but how can I tell if my rank is 0 because I don't have enough links to qualify for a rank of 1 or because I haven't been ranked yet? If my site hasn't been ranked yet can I expect a flood of traffic when it finally does get a rank?

Working on a website with an identical mirror site on the other side of the planet; how can I prevent the mirror from splitting the pagerank credit in search engines? This is an educational project and I do not have direct access to the other server. I currently am planning on having the other admin implement 301 redirects for the main pages and reference articles while maintaining the mirror for the more bandwidth intensive portions of the site. Is there a more elegant solution that won't require installation of new software packages? Scripting languages are available if need be. Does anyone know how plato.stanford.edu manages it (I have asked, they haven't responded)?

What is the point of PageRank, and why do people think that's a silly question?

What is the point of PageRank, and why do people think that's a silly question? What on earth is the point of the "PageRank" reading given by the Google Toolbar?

Please don't explain to me what PageRank is, or theorise about how it's calculated. I know all of that, or the broad strokes anyway.

My question is, out of context what can it possibly mean? If I search for "foo", then all the sites matching "foo" are ranked according to their PageRank, yes. Their foo-rank is used to sort them.

But what does it mean that, absent all context:

Microsoft and BoingBoing are both nine
Shakespeare dot com and NASA dot gov are both seven
a page about chocolate chip cookies is a six?

Obviously, if one's looking for Microsoft information, Microsoft is a ten -- but if you're looking to bake some cookies, then it's pretty much a zero.

But there the PageRank is, and when I ask "how can there be a PageRank without a context?" people seem to think it's not a sensible question.

The little tooltip says it signifies a page's "Importance" on the internet.

So that cookie page is two-thirds as "important" to the internet as Microsoft? And somebody's movie fan site can be as "important" as the IMDB listing for that movie?

How do I determine the sell value of a web site?

How do I determine the sell value of a site that has 5000+ readers per day (including RSS readers), 3300+ articles written, 120,000+ comments, 40+ active authors, and a high Google PageRank of 7? Three years ago I created a political discussion blog. It was unique at the time in that it truly tried to be non-partisan and offer different side-by-side viewpoints from each major party of politics.

The issue now is that I am no longer actively involved in politics and no longer am interested in maintaining the site. The Managing Editor, a volunteer, has offered to purchase the site from me in the interest of keeping it running as it has pretty wide and loyal readership.

The question is: How do I determine the value of a site that has 5000+ readers per day (including RSS readers), 3300+ articles written, 120,000+ comments, 40+ active authors, and a high Google PageRank of 7?

The problem is advertising on political web sites is very very cheap so 5000 ad impression per day only results in about $3 to $4 per day in revenue, barely enough to pay for hosting let alone pay the salary of a Managing Editor to keep the authors in line.

So basing the value of WatchBlog on the potential ad revenue is pretty weak. What I'd like to know is how to estimate an approximate value based on all of the other factors that make the site popular in Google as well as the 3+ year history of political writing and discussion.

Is the domain I'm acquiring tainted by its past life as a spam source?

I've found a domain name I want to acquire from its current owner, and it looks like I may be able to do so. The IP address at which the domain resides is listed in a spam blacklist database. If I acquire the name and give it a new IP address, I assume that particular problem goes away. What's the best place, though, to check and see if the domain name itself is widely considered to be a spam source? Should I consider the IP listing to sully the domain -- am I buying a potential Superfund site? I did look up the domain's pagerank at several different sites which claim to offer pagerank checking tools, and they all listed the pagerank as 1/10. I know that PR0 would be a big problem; how about PR1?

Thanks much.

Does cgi negatively affect pagerank?

Will converting a home page from shtml to cgi negatively impact its pagerank? I'm contemplating making the above change for a friend, who requires the ability to pass a parameter to her home page. She has heard somewhere that changing to a cgi script will torpedo her ranking. I've been unable to confirm or rule this out using google. Any insight?
