I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard. It has two admin accounts. Some time ago I stopped using account "A" in favor of new account "B" (the reason behind the creation of account B isn't relevant to this question, however). If I delete user account "A," what precautions must I take to ensure the preservation of the files created under "user A," and what automatically happens to the ownership of those files?

From what source does the authority to require building permits and inspections derive? I've dealt with this whole process before, but every time I have to, I think, "But hey - it's _my_ property! I paid for it, I pay taxes on it, and I pay for the upkeep. As long as I don't build something that could potentially damage or destroy the property of another, why do I need 'permission' from the government?" I know there are lots of issues involved, but when did we, as a nation, give up the right to do what you want on your own property, and is there a way of getting that right back?

We've moved every two years since 2000. Always renting. We're about to move into our very own condo, and in the interests of not being ripped off, we're avoiding the developer's sources/prices and buying our own appliances, window treatments, do our own closets, find our own contractor for the floors, etc.
The problem? We don't know how to do any of this stuff. Bonus points: 6 month old baby. [more inside]

My girlfriend and I are (probably) soon to be the owners of a 1 year old German Shepard. We know (and love) the dog and the dog knows (and, we're sure) loves us. But we've never been responsible for anything more than a plant before and that plant died. What are some tips other German Shepard owners can impart, in terms of what we can expect and how best to take care of him? [more inside]

Small-business dilemma involving a company with three owners who have an agreement to split profit three ways. Owner A needs new laptop and wants to expense it to the business, as 99% of business is run/done online. Owner B thinks laptop should come out of A's share of the $ and not be counted as a business expense unless Owners A B & C all get laptops. Who should pay for the new computer? The business? Or should the cost of the laptop be subtracted from A's earnings?

Despite MetaFilter's members' fantastic advice for my boyfriend to choose MIT over GA Tech, my guy is most likely going to stay in Atlanta. He's talked about the possibility of buying a house in ATL, but living on a student stipend, and without substantial savings, how would that work? (He's curious, too, not just me.) Renting in Atlanta is expensive, so a house payment could very possibly be lower than rent . . . and we've heard sometimes people buy without down payments now . . . but we're not sure about the logistics. Any good info is appreciated. : )

A couple years ago I ran accross a site that was keeping track of which domains a company owned. Now I can't find it. I'm NOT talking about a whois search here... this was a business oriented site, not a techie site like network solutions.
The article that linked me to it was on the subject of randomcompanySUCKS.com and other domains that companies have purchased out of fear or foresight.

Domain-amania! (part one)
A little less than a year ago, when I thought I was on the road to recovery, I had a shopping spree on GoDaddy, getting more than a dozen domain names I intended to turn into a network of cool sites. Nearly all of them have lain fallow since then, and now it's time to renew or relinquish and "thin out the herd". Over the next several days, I'll be Asking MeFi what names are worth keeping and what site ideas are worth pursuing. [more-on inside] [more inside]

While shopping around for domain names/ registration, I continually come across "already owned" names that are generating generic pages on domain registration sites. ie: "dotster" or "buydomains.com". My question - is there a way to buy these obviously un-used domains? Am I supposed to contact the hosting page? Are these domains , in fact, for sale?
