Safe place to spend the night between Phoenix and San Francisc?

I am driving from Phoenix to San Francisco, with all my worldly possessions in the car. I plan to split the trip into two days. Any suggestions of a good place to stay overnight where my stuff will be safe in the car? I don't know yet if it will be on the weekend or on a weekday, but I want to avoid the worst of LA traffic. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Shelter for my dogs?

Can anyone recommend a good boarding kennel in the Ottawa area? Although I grew up in Ottawa, I am fairly new to the area as a dog owner. What would the best option be for both overnight or weekend care and for longer week or 10-day care? I don't mind a bit of driving to get there.

15-hour layover in Madrid: tips, advice?

I have a 15-hour layover in Madrid, 10pm-1pm on a Monday night (ouch, but definitely worth it overall in this case). General advice or any personal experience there would be much appreciated! I'm looking for spots in the airport to sit and work on my laptop (ideally even with electrical outlets) and spots for a quick nap or some sleep. I'm fine sleeping in chairs. I'll only have two small pieces of hand luggage. The airport is mostly smoke-free and I need that, so buses into the city probably won't work for me. I've seen this. Thanks!

Plane Sleep

What to take and/or tips on how to sleep on an overnight transatlantic flight? Me and Mrs. ob are flying taking an overnight flight to London soon and neither of us can sleep on planes. We travel quite a lot and we normally get a day flight because of this problem. This time our schedule means that we have to fly overnight and we have to sleep as we have a long drive ahead of us the next day. Any thoughts/advice etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't commercial TV networks replay their prime time shows in the overnight hours?

Why don't commercial TV networks replay their prime time shows in the overnight hours? PBS and most basic cable stations will replay popular prime-time shows in the wee hours of the morning (i.e. if PBS shows a new episode of "Nature" at 8 PM EST, it will air again at 4 AM EST). This makes things obviously quite helpful for the Tivo fanatic who is otherwise unable to record two simultaneous prime-time shows. But I was SOL last Thursday when my wife had "The OC" set to a higher priority on the Tivo, and as a result I missed "The Office." Neither episode will likely be shown again until the summer.

So what gives? The hours between Conan and the local early news (1:30 AM to 5 AM EST) are complete dead zones for commercial network affiliates, and replaying the prime time schedule would be an ideal way to recapture lost viewership. I know that the networks are pissed at Tivo for cutting into ad revenue, but I would have figured that attracting more pairs of eyes is better than shutting them out completely. Not to mention that they could make a tidy profit from advertisers who wouldn't otherwise bother buying commercial spots in the overnight hours.

So I guess I'm wondering if network execs are just dunderheaded, or if there's some sort of strategy at work here.

Why my Windows XP laptop slows down overnight

I have been noticing a problem with my work laptop which is running XP SP2. If left up and running all night, then on most mornings i find out it is running very sluggishly with 100% CPU utilization (from the graph). First I thought may be it is firefox with its large number of open tabs. But I am not so sure anymore. killing firefox does not help. Also when I look at the CPU column in task manager i cant quite figure out what is causing that 100% utilization. None of high numbers on the CPU column look suspect. Obviously I am missing something here. One thing I am not 100% sure, and there may be something to it, is that I may have seen this problem more often when I am using wifi instead of wired LAN at home. But I need to verify this.

After this happens I usually have to reboot the machine after bringing it back to work. I am able to suspend the machine and bring it to work and plug it into the work LAN. But unless I reboot it it really runs slow. Just logging out does not help.
I would like some advice on how to figure out what is causing that 100% utlization and why this strange behavior. I was suspecting some trojan activity..but I am not very sure. Of course if I suspend the machine before I go to sleep at night, everything is fine in the morning. Also i never see this kind of behavior during times when I am using the machine..from morning till i go to sleep (may be except when the virus scanner is making its weekly runs).

Where to stay in Chattanooga?

First visit to Chattanooga. Where should we stay? My wife and I moved to GA (from MA) a couple of years ago and we're finally going to start exploring. We decided to try Chattanooga overnight next weekend. Where's a good place to stay? I guess we'll try to visit the aquarium, ruby falls, rock city. Is there someplace else we HAVE to see?

Camping Outside Apple Store

Suppose you were planning to stake your claim to Mac Geekery by camping outside the new London Apple Store the night before the Grand Opening.

What would you do to ensure your: (a) warmth; (b) safety; and (c) comfort? The store's at the Oxford Circus end of Regent Street, which I'm guessing is quieter than the heart of Soho, but I still don't fancy my chances hanging out on the street with a PowerBook. I don't know London very well. Am I likely to get much trouble on a Friday night/Saturday morning, sitting on Regent Street with a book?

Also, I'm hoping to get away with just a folding chair and warm clothes -- sleeping bags seems a bit over the top. Or am I just being foolish? What would you bring to keep yourself warm and entertained?
