We are looking to buy a new oven/stove that is 30" wide, but the spot that it will go is going to be 34" wide, which leaves a 2" gap on each side, in the middle of a longer counter. Is there a way to do this such that it will not look too weird, without redoing all of our counter tops and lower cabinets? It would have to be more cosmetic than structural, as that width is pretty much a given.

Asking for a friend: Two times in the past six months, my oven/stove and a spot near my refrigerator (several feet away) have smelled *very strongly* of some petrochemical, like benzene or kerosene or gasoline or something sweet and fuelly like that (i.e., not natural gas, not propane). There is a similar, faint, lingering odor in the oven. What could be causing this? Some kind of propellant in the gas lines? Illicit neighbor activity? If it helps, I'm on the 4th floor of a 6-floor building in NYC.

Well, our new old apt (it's new to us, but it's old) has no range hood. Looks like the previous owner decided to make a HUGE pass through. What solutions/options do I have (besides some sort of bizaare way to hookup an ordinary rangehood). Do the somewhat reviled ionic breeze / ionic cleaners work well enough to clean the air?
