What do I need to know about buying a tent?

I would like to try camping, but I am an absolute beginner, and don't know a thing about roughing it outdoors. I guess the first thing I need to organize is shelter, so please help me: what do I need to know about buying a tent for one person?

Where do you find the best online deals for all-things-electronic?

From a previous AskMefi post dated 2006, I've re-discovered Newegg, Slick Deals, Hot Deals, Woot, Tech Bargains, and Spendfish. It's been almost 8 years since the post, though, so I'm sure I'm out of the loop. Google is great for aggregating these sites, but I'm not sure about their quality (i.e. deal-awesomeness) from a simple search. Can you tell me what I'm missing? Thanks in advance!!

Step right up! Oh wait, you're taller than I am...

I'm looking for fundraiser carnival game ideas for middle school kids (ages 11-14). The carnival will be held in the spring, with a Color Festival theme. We will have a color run; we're looking for booth games, as well. These kids have been playing the ring toss/ cakewalk/ bouncy castle circuit for years, so we're looking to make it more appealing to them now that they're older. Some popular ideas so far have been a football toss and outdoor twister. Do you have more? [Gotta shoot you down on the teacher pie-tossing/ dunking booth ideas, though. I'd like to keep enforcing respect for the teachers, especially since their average age is about 24.]

How to give our cats an outdoor screened porch experience?

We're moving from a place with a screened porch to an apartment with a balcony. Our cats love (love, love, love) sitting out on our screened porch and basking in the sun. They only get to do it supervised during the daytime, but it is their favorite thing, EVER. The new place has no particularly obvious way to screen the balcony and nothing that we can really secure screens. Any suggestions? [more inside]

Help me get my dog outside

We adopted Willa on Sunday afternoon. She is a sweet, placid 3-year-old retired racing greyhound. She seemed to settle in okay on Sunday, but since Monday morning she has been very fearful and anxious. The most problematic manifestation of this is steadfast refusal to leave the house -- she freezes up and has to be carried/dragged over the threshold to go outside to do her business. [more inside]

How can I try out camping?

I would like to find a way to try out camping, without buying a lot of gear. Can I rent gear somewhere? Maybe from an outfitter or outdoor education sort of place? My ideal would be to fly or drive to a U.S. National Park, put myself in the hands of an expert who will rent me gear and take me to a camp site, help me set up the gear and give me basic instructions about how to use it and cook stuff, then have the expert leave while I try things out for a long weekend. Does such a service exist? [more inside]

How can I prep for a solo canoe trip

I am thinking about taking a canoe trip down a local river, the Willamette, in Oregon. How can I best prepare for this trip given I've mostly done water trips in supervised groups. [more inside]

Have rods, tackle & permit, will travel near Seattle.

I just acquired a couple of light-duty (i.e. inappropriate for river salmon) fishing rods, I've received a primer in selecting tackle and setting everything up, I know my knots, I've got my permits and a Discover Pass, and my cooler is ready for some fresh catch. Where, within a 40 minutes' drive of Seattle, can I go catch delicious fish that I can cook and eat? Any recommendations for location-specific books or other resources geared toward an absolute beginner who is more enthusiastic about the food than the sport? [more inside]

Winnipeg....here I come! Or may be not!

Tell me about living in Winnipeg, Canada. All the good, the bad and the ugly. Low salary and in scientific research and a foreign worker....what did you like and hate about it? For someone who loves being out in the sun, walking/hiking outside a couple of times a week, is this going to be hard to navigate, if its an option at all that is? Or am I going to freeze inside with boredom in my apartment for most of the year and get seasonal depression and what not? I have never lived anywhere where it snows but I love winter. However, I am not sure if I am considering the Tundra here... It is especially important for me right now, at the point where I am in life, to be able to go out and about and walk, as silly as that may sound. Thanks in advance!

Origin of Hotta-San hunting knife at Best Made?

I've been looking at this knife at Best Made for a while, and I can't seem to find its provenance. What camera should I take to Patagonia?

My girlfriend and I are leaving for a vacation in Chile in about a week. We'll be spending most of our time hiking and seeing glaciers and penguins in southern Patagonia, with a few days in Santiago at the end. I'd like to bring a compact, versatile, weatherproof camera with great image quality, 15-20x zoom, and good low-light performance -- but compromises must be made. What kind of camera should I take with me? My budget is $300-750. [more inside]

Outdoor Colorado Weddings

I'm posting this as anonymous as I have some friends and family who read this site, and they don't know we're this serious yet. My girlfriend and I are talking about getting married this summer if we can afford it and afford living together. We're looking at possibly Saint Malo off of Highway 7, Panorama Point or doing something in Rocky Mountain National Park. We're leaning more towards a summer wedding outdoors, June or July. Saint Malo is great, but expensive for what we want ($1000 for a few hours). Panorama Point in Golden Gate State park is more feasible. We're both really practical so we want our friends and family there but not at significant cost or debt. Other then Rocky Mountain National Park or Golden Gate State park, what are some good locations in Colorado for an outdoor wedding? In terms of cost, food for < 30 guests, location, photographer etc... what should we plan to spend? We're talking about doing it on a weekday.
