What do I need to know about buying a tent?

I would like to try camping, but I am an absolute beginner, and don't know a thing about roughing it outdoors. I guess the first thing I need to organize is shelter, so please help me: what do I need to know about buying a tent for one person?

How can I try out camping?

I would like to find a way to try out camping, without buying a lot of gear. Can I rent gear somewhere? Maybe from an outfitter or outdoor education sort of place? My ideal would be to fly or drive to a U.S. National Park, put myself in the hands of an expert who will rent me gear and take me to a camp site, help me set up the gear and give me basic instructions about how to use it and cook stuff, then have the expert leave while I try things out for a long weekend. Does such a service exist? [more inside]

Dark sky, cheap telescope, totally inexperienced operator. What can I see?

Astronomy/Skygazing Beginner: I'm gonna be camping out in a dark place, and I have access to a cheap low-consumer-grade telescope. Is it worth it to take it? What could it see? What could I reliably find? Three technically-competent operators, but zero experience/familiarity with the use of any telescope. [more inside]

Happy camper. Or not...

I have scored a week long wilderness trip. Hurrah for me. Except the last time I went camping was when I was, oh, 14. And I hated it. This time, I'll be working as well as camping. So my question to you, gentle woodsfolk of Metafilter, is what can I do to make my week in the wild productive and fun? Rather than the living hell I remember camping to be. [more inside]

I am trying to buy a LED headlamp on ebay...they range in brightness from 8 to 30+ and the one I want is 8. Is that goint to be bright enough for pitching a tent in the dark? I tried to look up LED levels on the inter-web but all I found was scientific mumbo jumbo, can someone just tell me which one to buy please!? Thanks
