Please help me alleviate my sore throat pain

What do you do to help your sore throat feel better? You are not my doctor, and I am not looking for a cure or any sort of diagnosis. I am having chronic sore throats (every 2-4 weeks since May), have been to an Ear, Nose, & Throat doctor, and will be having a tonsillectomy in January/February 2010. In the meantime, however, I need to cope with the pain and discomfort associated with swollen glands, tonsilitis, and throat pain. Basically, I hydrate constantly which helps, but I have the feeling there are other things I could be trying that might make this more bearable. What do you do to feel better when you have a sore throat?

Things I have tried include Chloraseptic (helps for about 20 minutes and then konks out), Advil (seems to dull the pain slightly), Vicks (the ointment seems to relax the muscles a little), lots of seltzer water (the carbonation feels good in my throat), and some ice cream and tea (definitely helps, but not long lasting by any means). Do you have any other ideas? I am happy to try anything that sounds safe. Thank you!

Am I overreacting to a yellow jacket sting?

Is this yellow jacket sting normal? I have a doctor's appointment for later today. I'm not sure if I'm overreacting. I know my histamine response is! Pics and I had never been stung by anything before. I got stung on the back of the calf on Sunday, mid-morning. That makes today Day 3 (Day 2, Day 1), and the itching is unbearable and there is still a lot of swelling and inflammation. My dad got stung 5 times and his itch, but are getting better. My wife got stung 4 times and hers are almost gone (even one on her thumb). Mine just seems to get worse and worse.

I read this bee sting thread, but I know yellow jackets are supposed to be worse. The swelling extends about 1 inch from the sting site on all sides, and then the inflammation spreads about 6 inches down my leg. What's the worst that can happen? What will the doctor do? Am I better off just taking a bunch of Benadryl and toughing it out, or is my leg gonna fall off?

(Possibly useful information: I'm the girl who gets eaten alive by all bugs, no matter how much DEET I have on, and swell up around the bites and itch for days. I've spent at least half of every recent vacation in a Benadryl haze. Chiggers, mosquitoes, no-see-ums -- they ALL love me!)

Head Meets Wall a Little Too Enthusiastically

I just returned from the ER where I was cat-scanned and screened for a concussion. I need some help. One nurse got the call from radiology and said "[my lastname] is a mild concussion" - not to me, but I overheard. About 30 minutes later, a different nurse came and told me my CT was negative, and gave me discharge papers for "head injury". I was told to return if I started throwing up, to have someone wake me every 2-4 hours overnight and to follow up with my GP in 1-2 days. This arises out of hitting my head in an embarrassing manner at about 3am this morning (sober). You are not my doctor and I am not asking for medical advice. I will call my doc in the morning to make the f/u appointment.

But, in the meantime, I am trying to figure out how to keep myself comfortable tonight. The problem is, I don't know whether I have a mild concussion, or just a bad bump, and I don't know if that difference is significant. Also, since this morning, I have been getting a very sore throat and feeling just off - almost but not quite a little flu-ish. Does that HAPPEN with head injuries? Any suggestions on the best way to keep comfy? How long should I expect to feel this way - should I anticipate (will ask my doc in the morning, but want to prepare accordingly) being out of my (office/desk) job for a day or so?

It hurts SO bad, aleve didnt help much, and I am so freezing cold I really would rather not ice it (unless essentially I "have" to). Obvs no one is my doctor, and I will not accept (because you are not offering) medical advice - I will follow my discharge instructions to the letter. I just don't even know WHAT to google, right now.

Pain relief for nailbiting episode?

I snapped and bit my nails way too short after having kicked the habit for several months. Now all my fingertips are seriously painful. Is there any kind of ointment or something I can buy at a drug store to cut down on the pain? If not, is aspirin or an NSAID a better bet for pain reduction?

My fingertips are not actually bleeding, there's just a lot of tender skin exposed that was previously under the nails. Both the application of pressure and the skin shifting around when I bend my fingers are pretty excruciating right now. (I am totally re-quitting nail biting. Ouch.)

What's going on in my stomach?

YANMD, but I have a strange pain in my gut. It's been hanging around for years and years, coming and going, and I'm curious if anyone has any idea. I guess the reason I've never really been to a doctor about it is that it's a relatively infrequent thing. It's been going on for years and years and years - I don't remember exactly when it started, but I would guess I was maybe 15? It happens to me maybe once every 5 or 6 months, and lasts for maybe a half a day or so, and then I kind of forget about it until it happens again.

Well, it happened last night, so I thought perhaps I would query the collective.

So, I'm sitting on the couch watching TV and I go to stand up and I get the distinct impression that someone has put a fish hook through my belly button and tied it with a very tight string to somewhere on my lower spine. It is an intense, searing pain. It causes me to walk somewhat stooped forward, as that makes it feel like there is some "slack" in that string. If I attempt to stand up straight, the pain in and around my belly button - where I envision the fish hook - is absolutely incredible.

It also, and I believe this may be key, plays a role when I urinate. When I feel I have this "condition", I have learned that I simply can't try to take a leak while standing up. The pain in my abdomen around my belly button becomes very intense when I pee, and as is the urge to try to bend forward and try to minimize it. If I pee sitting down, the pain is still there, but I can more easily lean "into it" and minimize it a bit.

I woke up this morning and I was fine. It's gone. And it will stay gone until like 6 months from now, when I'll get off the choice and it will mysteriously have returned.

Any ideas?

How to stop hair tangling

Is there a way to keep straight hair from tangling? I have very fine, straight hair, which is fairly long. I would like to wear it down, but it quickly becomes tangled, even to the point of having painful knots. I wore it even a little loosely tonight (gathered at the back of my neck with a clip, but otherwise loose), and got home to find I had bad knots right under my hair near my neck.

I don't normally use conditioner, but wash my hair with only a small amount of shampoo - should I use it? a creme rinse? Wash my hair less? (I was trying to wash it only every other day, but I keep forgetting as my brain turns off in the shower).

Home or cheap solutions would be good - I live in a small working-class city, and I'm a student, so I can't afford salon-type treatments even if they were around (which they aren't).

Do muscle mineral soaks work?

Do muscle mineral soaks really work? If so, how? I pulled a muscle in my calf and it hurts like hell. I'm poping Tylenol but I don't like to do that too frequently because it says not to (right there on the bottle). It occurs to me that I've tried mineral muscle soaks in the past (you know the ones I'm talking about). I liked them well enough, but wouldn't soaking in warm water amount to the same thing, as far as the sore muscle is concerned?

I can't find any plausible explanation for why they're helping. I tried Googling around but most results are either marketing results or explanations from folks who are very enthusiastic about them, but can't explain how they work. Isn't the heat from the water in the tub doing most of the soothing? Salts can't enter my body, I'm not a turkey being brined!

I know you're not my doctor, I'll see my doctor if the pain increases or becomes a real problem. I'm just wondering if the pain is making me prone to buying something that's bogus.

Lesser of two tax burdens?

My partner and I need to pay off some debt, and unfortunately we need to dip into our retirement funds. Our tax accountant is on vacation and we can't find the answer to our question. We have two sources–either sell some stock or cash out a couple of short-term IRA CDs. Which is the lesser of two evils? The service charge on either transaction would be about the same (~$50). We understand that the painful part would come in the form of the taxes on the amount we receive. Is there a difference in how the two types of transactions would be taxed? If we took a theoretical amount of $10k from either transaction, which would be taxed at a higher rate? What is the tax rate on either of these. I'm in California, and we'd need to do this before the end of 2008. If it matters, the money would go directly to pay off credit cards, car, student loans.

And it always makes sense to pay off debt before saving for retirement, right? (Higher interest rate on debt than retirement fund, blah blah). Oh, and we're living paycheck to paycheck.

Thanks in advance!

DIY Dentistry: always a bad idea?

Should I pull this tooth out? My father and grandfather both lost all of their teeth by the time they were 40. At 31, I'm currently sporting nine broken teeth myself, but eight of those are just context to my question. The ninth one is the problem. The nerve is exposed, and this is causing a periodic radiant zing of agony down my jaw and neck, and into my chest. I don't care about saving the tooth, but the pain is pretty awful, and I am concerned that this is starting to take a toll on the rest of my body.

I can't afford proper dental care (no income, no savings, bad credit, no insurance of any kind, surviving on the generosity of a friend). Am I better off trying to pull this sucker myself, or leaving it to fester? Which is more dangerous/insanely stupid? Do I have professional dental care options which have not occurred to me? Or do you have any advice for dealing with this kind of pain on an ongoing basis?

I am in Columbus, Ohio, if that makes any difference. Throwaway email account at zinginghelltooth at gmail.com, for for sharing tips and terrifying self-dentistry anecdotes.

How can I keep my SO from kicking me in his sleep? My SO is 6'4" and I'm a much smaller 5'5". Periodically when he turns over in his sleep he'll hit me with his knee or elbow. He of course feels terrible about it and wants to do anything he can to try to stop. We have a queen sized bed and getting a larger bed is not an option. Honestly I'm not sure that would solve the problem anyway, as normally we have enough room as long as he's staying on his side.

Chapter Five: I Am Attacked By Wasps

Why did the wasps attack me? What are these wasps? And am I a marked person? Shall I seek revenge? I was walking home from getting a pedicure late yesterday afternoon, and walked past the local wasp nest. It's a hole in the ground, surrounded by little stones. When I first spotted it some weeks ago, I thought it was some sort of rat or snake hole, but noticed a few wasps lazily drifting in and out. I thought, well, nice, circle of life, pollinating the world, etc. etc.

So yesterday, I walked by and thought, "Hmm, it's a bit busy at Ye Olde Wasp Hole and HEY OW OW OW OW OW OW" -- I was stung by one, and then immediately stung by several others, (six stings in all), even as I walked briskly away. Even a quarter of a mile away, I was buzzed by a rather angry wasp. Criminy!

The stings were more hot and pinchy at the time, and then raised welts appeared, which we treated with ice and vinegar. They're now a bit itchy, although the redness has subsided.

Now, I was wearing dark clothes, and no perfume per se (although there was lotion used on my legs at the pedicure place).

My husband (after cautiously examining me for any errant stingy things) took a quick look online and announced that if one swats at a wasp and causes it to sting, it leaves a scent that attracts other wasps to attack (sort of a "O HAI HERE IZ SUCKER 2 BITEZ" sign) -- is this true? Is there a half-life to this scent? Another wasp had a go at me this morning (I was far away from the wasp hole) and I wonder if the scent is still clinging to my backpack.

And we did they attack me? Was I just unlucky? I didn't see anything like a kid nearby who may have poked at the hole, or maybe a very bad dog. And what sort of wasps build holes in the ground surrounded by stone defenses, anyway? The wasps of my Southern California youth were paper wasps that built nests under the eaves.

Lastly -- should I contact the city about this (I live in Walnut Creek, CA)? The wasp hole is next to a curb on a street near a well-used paved trail. Luckily I am not allergic to stings, but what if someone else came along who wasn't so lucky? What if it were a small child or an elderly person? My preference is to leave the hole alone, but is it a threat?

Description of the creatures:
:: yellow & black bands
:: live in a hole in the ground surrounded by lots of carefully-arranged pebbles
:: VERY VERY STINGY

Signed,

Hernia in C5-6

My doc thinks I have a herniated disc at c5-6, and wants to operate does anyone have experience with this injury and if so, could you tell me a bit about it. I am 23 and sometime during the past 6-8 mo. I started having pain down the side of my right arm. In addition I have what feels like an awful knot behind my right shoulder blade and a general feeling of tightness or pulling down my right arm. For several months it has not gotten especially worse, though it has not improved in the slightest either. The pain has more recently spread down to my forearm and towards the end of last week (following several days of skiing) my thumb started going numb once in a while. So on Friday I went to see a spine specialist and he told me I essentially have a textbook herniated disc at c5-6 which is pinching the nerve and causing the symptoms described above. I am scheduled for an MRI tomorrow and plan on scheduling an appointment with another doctor for a second opinion, but I would like to know if anyone else has had this particular injury and what your experience has been. I have read that therapy and meds are an option, but that seems to be geared toward those (smart) people who take care of their injuries soon after they occur. Given that this herniation seems to have occurred quite a while ago, surgery is the option that my doctor recommended. I don't have a whole lot more info yet (whether they want to go in through the front or the back for example), but I would love to hear from some mefites as to how their experience went. Thanks, any advice is greatly appreciated. I live in Chicago and while I have a doctor I trust and a referral for a second doctor, if anyone is especially enthusiastic about their doc I'd love to hear it.

Active life with a bone bruise?

Does anyone have experience with a bone bruise? I have one, apparently, just when I wanted to get serious about exercising again. Ten days ago, I tripped and fell smack on my knees on hard concrete. The screaming, the limping, the recriminations. Although the right knee got better, I went to get an X-ray for the left, since I was afraid I'd fractured the patella. Thankfully there was no breakage. I was told that it was probably a bone bruise or [some kind of] hematoma, and that it would take a good while to heal in either case.

This was an out-of-town injury; treatment was brief. Advice to "ease up" on it and to ice it is not encouraging, especially when some sources say it may take months to heal. Walking doesn't pain me, although descending stairs does (and gives me a weird feeling of motion in my knee, which I hate).

I've got the grim feeling I need to go back to my regular doctor, bite the bullet and ask for an expensive opinion. But what do you think he'll say? If you were me, a young relatively healthy woman who needed to shed a couple but was game, what would you feel free to do? I was just about to start exercising daily again, really for serious true this time right after the holidays, and I was honestly looking forward to it. Long brisk walks and/or elliptical cardio is what I want to start with, plus squats to build leg strength.

SF Bay Area Physical Therapist for active older person?

My 74-year-old father-in-law broke his femur skiing last week. Please recommend a physical therapist in the SF Bay Area for a very active older person. He's not really sure how it happened, but before lunch on his first day of the ski season my f-i-l wiped out hard and broke his femur in two places. Fortunately the fracture was not compound and did not cause major bleeding, but he did need surgery to repair the break. As a result he now has a titanium rod inserted into his leg as well as some good drugs.

After getting released from the hospital this morning, he's facing a few months of recovery, during which everyone agrees that it would be a good idea for him to get some physical therapy. However, my wife is concerned that your garden-variety PT will read her father's chart and see a geezer with a broken hip (he's 74). That's true -- but he's a very active guy. He's got more energy than I have, and I'm half his age. He really needs something more than a program designed to return him to a weekly bridge game at the local senior center.

Any suggestions for a good PT who has experience dealing with sports injuries in older folks, or suggestions of how to find one? This is in the SF bay area -- east bay would be preferable but not required.

Do I try to win her back?

My girlfriend broke up with me. Yeah, this is one of those questions... We dated for a relatively short time, a few months, but it was long enough for me to realize exactly how crazy I am about this girl. About 2 nights ago, however, she decided to break things off. She's been accepted to a school out of town, and is generally quite a busy person, and felt that she couldn't commit and give me the attention she thought I deserved. She still cares about me and wants to remain close, just not in a romantic relationship right now.

I respect her views but I'm having a tough time accepting it. Not that it should be easy or anything. But, anyway, I'm not just wasting space here venting. I'm here to ask if it's a good idea for me to approach her and try to "win her back", so to speak. The more I type the less this sounds like a good idea, but so does just giving up. I want to tell her that I think that this could work, and that we've basically given up before we've even tried. She won't be leaving for another few months, and I'd like to spend as much time with her as possible before she actually is gone.

Please don't think I'm a creepy obsessive stalker. I'm talking to the girl as I type this, it's not as if she's telling me to get lost, and if the only response I got from her was a "No." then I'd accept that and move on. I'm just wondering what my chances are at this actually working, or if I'll just end up making things worse.

Why is winter more painful?

Why is a blow to the body more painful when it is cold outside? If you hit your thumb with a hammer, or slam your fingers in a door it is always more painful if your skin is cold. What is the mechanism involved with this? If prostaglandin is released to the nerves differently, why?

I just saw JD Drew hit in the ankle by a pitch, and it's a little chilly in Boston. Ouch.

What to do about my shoulder dysplasia?

What to do about my shoulder dysplasia? When one of my shoulders started popping in my early 20s I went to see an orthopedic about it. His x-rays of my shoulder revealed a dysplasia in both - where the head of your humerus (I see nothing funny here!) is somewhat like this @ mine is closer to this #

He prescribed some physical therapy for me and suggested I keep up with the exercises the PT would teach me, so as to prevent bursitis in the future. I've gone back and forth on how observant I am about the exercise over the years, but for the most part I'm without pain. However the popping is in both shoulders now - has been for a while - and while I don't have daily pain, I am more prone to soreness after heavy exertion. I somewhat overdid it recently and consequently wondered:

It's been more than ten years since I saw anyone about them, and I wonder - are there better or more common treatments now? Is it worth a visit to another ortho? Am I likely to simply get prescribed another round of physical therapy visits, or has surgery become a more common solution for a malformed ball-in-socket situation?

DoINeedADoctorFilter: Yesterday, I was the bottom half of a two-car gokart pileup and the upper car landed on my right shin. I was wearing jeans, so the skin was only cut a little. I can walk on it with no pain, so i don't think it's broken or fractured. The weird thing is there is about a 6" circle surrounding the scratch that is completely NUMB. I've never hurt myself before. Is this normal?

Yes, I could go see a doctor, but I don't want him to laugh at me if it's just a scratch.

Auto insurance recommendations in Ontario for a new immigrant? I've just moved to Ontario and am trying to get auto insurance. However, due to the fact that I've just moved here I don't have my long history of safe driving -- my records only go back to 2004. Doing some random digging (PC Financial, mostly) results in insurance quotes of over two hundred dollars a month, which completely flabbergasts me. Do any kind Ontario folk know of some secret ways I can bring these payments down? Any providers you think are better than others? Is it possible to get some sort of incredibly high deductible or something to bring down the price? This is major ouch. Thanks much.

Forget the Chinese Water Torture

Is this some sort of Japanese Torture Device? What is this? I found it boxed up carefully in the garage of the house I bought. The previous owner did have some Asian furniture, and I'm fairly certain they spent some time in Asia (both are deceased so I cant ask). There is a sticker on the bottom that says Japan. From the top, the design obviously looks like it is of Asian origin, but the attachments are what I can't figure out. There are four sharp pointed spikes coming up from the base, and the parallel attachment has about 6 sharp points of varying length facing down. Since the perpendicular arm is adjustable (up/down) and can be tightened, I'm thinking it is intended to hold something securely to the board, but am not sure what. Other than a hunk of meat, what else would you secure to a board like this.

If it is a cutting/carving board, What is up with the design? Is this just a nice carving platter? Or is there some significance to it? Do I have something of value or collectors interest on my hands?

Athletic cup question from the mom

Does anyone here have experience wearing the Nutty Buddy cup? My son needs one for martial arts and has hated wearing the conventional style ones we've found. The Nutty Buddy sounds like it would be more comfortable, but it's a pretty expensive investment, involving the cup plus compression shorts plus a supporter, so I'm reluctant to buy without some unbiased input.
He was always one of those sensitive kids - you know, socks, tags in shirts, seams etc, so this has been a pretty big obstacle for him, although he's much more tolerant now of being uncomfortable. I can't imagine wearing a big piece of plastic wedged between my legs, so I have sympathy for him, and don't want to tell him to "just get over it", if there is an alternative. On the other hand, if you know of another more comfortable "system" I'd be glad to hear about it. Even if it does not offer as much protection as the NB, anything would be better than what he is wearing now (nothing).

Help me escape the cycle of pain!

Help me find some relief. Injured my back years ago in a bicycle accident and the chronic pain is getting old. Long explanation inside. It was back in the fall of 2002, I was a freshman and Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. I had just finished up physical therapy for a torn ACL I suffered my senior year in football, and the physical therapist said that exercise was the best way for my knee to feel better. So, I got myself a nice Trek from a cycle shop...

Anyway, one day I was cruising down one of the many steep hills in Marquette when the chain failed, and I flew head first over the handle bars. I absorbed most of the impact with my right arm and shoulder. For days afterwards I had excruciatingly painful spasms in the muscles over my right shoulder blade. The on campus doctor gave me some Flexeril and sent me on my way. That helped me sleep, but really, didn't do much else to ease my pain during the day.

When I came home for Thanksgiving I saw my orthopedic surgeon and he said that it felt like some muscles or tendons had partially tore, and healed themselves up, but there was a lot of scare tissue in there. He likened it to a hard piece of gristle in a piece of meat. He suggested I do some stretching exercises and some light weight training. I did the exercises for a few months and I felt much better. The pain came back about a year later and the exercises help, but the pain hasn't ever gone away since.

I saw a chiropractor (yeah, I know) after I hurt my back in nasty fall on some ice, and he said that my right shoulder was much lower than my left, and showed me by drawing a line on the wall where my left shoulder was and where my right shoulder was. It didn't make any difference as to what the chrio did, the shoulder never got better, but that's not really why I went there in the first place, as my lower back was extremely out of whack.

Now I'm sitting here and my shoulder blade muscles are still very tender. Stretching helps a bit, but my shoulder has developed a nasty popping sound and clicking feeling when I make circles (can't think of a better explanation) with my arms stretched horizontally. I've had a few professional massages, and the masseuse says it feels like there are a lot of knots in those muscles, but she couldn't ever get them worked out and they were very painful when she pressed on them. What can I do to relieve the pain and make it more tolerable in the long run... I'm 23 and I feel like I'm 63.

I promise never to walk for miles in flip-flos again if this pain goes away.

I walked around in flip-flops all day, and now my big toes really, really hurt. So I´m doing one of those "backpack-for-awhile" trips, and while in Barcelona I ran out of socks. "Easy enough, " I thought, "I´ll just walk around in my flip-flops and do laundry tonight." So I walk all day (Thursday)--with a bit of mild hiking up to the big park there--and my toes really started to hurt. I took it easy that night and pretty much stayed in, walked in shoes the next day and the same thing happened. I guess, technically, the pain never went away.

It hurts most when I try to rub my big toe on top of the toe next to it. I´m not sure if that´s a common thing to do, so I understand I could be freakish for that, but the same movement/bendability is also needed for walking. So basically it hurts to walk. This morning when I tried to flex my big toes it really felt like my tendons running up the to of my feet were dry rubberbands. It was painful (and mildly nauseating).

My questions are:
A) What did I do?
B) If I spend a couple of days off my feet will it go away?
C) Can I rub out the pain/put leeches on my feet/etc. to get out the pain while I´m travelling?
D) If I can't do anything to solve it, will I do any pemanent damage by continuing to walk without treatment?

I 'm travelling until May 2nd, so this will be quite the bummer, potentially.

I also realize someone might have asked a similar question a few months ago, but perhaps are problems are different/maybe there's some new toe-pain specialist to the scene.

Kids: never walk all day in flip-flops,
What is this and how much does it hurt? My dentist was incredibly unhelpful in terms of describing the process, the consult is several weeks away, and I wasn't really able to find much online with regard to this procedure, at least nothing in terms of what I can expect, pain-wise. Has anyone recently undergone this procedure and how bad was it?
