Why is Time Machine trying to backup 35 GB of data every single day when I'm only using 300 GB of my 500 GB HD and I know I have not changed or added that much in the time since my last backup?

Recently aded an external drive to my iMac for storage of photo files. It runs off a Firewire 800 port. I also use a Time Capsule.
The external drive is mounted overnight via crontab for the daily backup run. When that's done, a script unmounts the drive. This works reliably. The drive, then, should be unmounted the rest of the time.
However, the drive is mounted at unexpected and sporadic intervals. The logs reveal that this is usually, but not always, immediately following the unmounting of the Time Capsule after an hourly run. Not on every run, but perhaps on one run per day. In addition, the external drive is sometimes mounted in a way that appears to have no association with the Time Capsule.
What's going on?

Let it be known, first, that I devoured past posts on
Macs and backup tools, and see a lot of things I want to try. However, I used Apple's own
Mac Backup 3 application (a .Mac tool) prior to learning here that it sucks. So, for those who have also similarly (if inexplicably) used Mac Backup, I have a question. How do I know if it worked?

I'm looking for a basic, personal Mac-based backup plan.
I've got 25 gigs of data - files and media - on my Mac that I want to keep backed up, every week at least. I've used .Mac's Backup program, but that's too slow for this size of backup (and doesn't seem to have that capacity).

I have three 160 gig hard drives full of Apple Lossless music that I've ripped from my CDs. I want to keep these drives backed up, obviously. Is the most cost effective route to just buy a 500 gig (or ideally, one TB) drive for this purpose? Are there enclosures that hold multiple hard drives that would be appropriate (and cost effective) for this use? With the deals out there, it seems cheaper to buy more 160s than a 500 gig. I'm on a Mac G5.

Mac OSX Server Backup question: what's the best way to ensure that my small office doesn't lose the data we store on our file server? Right now we use Retrospect with a tape drive, but it's not an ideal solution, because finding stuff on the tape is a huge pain, and the time required to maintain it is lost time. Should we go with a portable external hard drive (someone brings the tapes home just in case of fire or explosion)? Or purchase an off-site solution?

Does anyone know a good backup program? What I want to do is make a carbon copy of a folder on my laptop and have it on my external firewire drive in OS X.
It's a sample library that is pretty big and I don't want to drag copy to whole thing over every time. What I'd like is some sort of "sync" type backup program that would go in and note which files have been added/ changed. Everything app I've seen just wants to make a folder with the date on it periodically.

Segmented disc burning on a mac. I have 150gb of disc-image backups on a 200gb drive. I need to burn them off so i can make a fresh set.
Impression 2 offers segmented direct-to-disc backup, but apparently relies on Apple's built-in discburning, which requires loads of swap space per job - in this instance, if i were to burn it all at once (I won't, believe me!) I'd need around 300gb of swap space. Which I don't have. Can recent versions of
Toast do this? What about the granpappy of Mac bak,
Retrospect (licensing issues aside)? [gigabytes inside]
