What to do in Northern Europe?

TravelFilter: Amsterdam, Cologne, Copenhagen, Oslo. 2-3 days each. Mid-November. What to do? I'm going to those cities in Mid-November, and spending 2-3 days in each. What should I do? Where should I eat? Cheap is good, but I'm more interested in interesting/exciting/fun/unique. Where should I stay for cheap?

Also, how cold will it be? Should I bring a light jacket + sweaters? Heavy jacket? I live in LA, so cold for me is having to wear jeans.

My friend is continuing on to Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Moscow, then taking the train to Beijing. Any suggestions for him?

And what exactly does the conductor do? Collect fares?

Philharmonic Filter: Novice goes to see a great night of orchestra music in Oslo. Bolero was the finale, now I feel captivated and ready to explore. Which direction should I take and how can encourage my auditory palette to grow? Ideally, any recommendations towards best approach for learning more on orchestra, history and composition are appreciated. This includes links to live performances or even a primer on the subject.

Plus - which city has the best orchestra? I travel extensively and to understand more on the individual qualities each group would be fantastic.

Help me plan my Scandinavian adventure!

Help me plan my Scandinavian adventure! I'm going to be spending 4 days in Iceland and 6 days in Norway in late August. Right now we're planning on flying into Iceland on a Friday, then departing Monday for Bergen. I somehow how have to get to Oslo by Friday for a wedding.

I'm looking for hotel and restaurant recommendations in Iceland and Bergen, Norway, as well as quirky, won't-find-this-anywhere-else type places. I've been to Norway before as a kid, and seem to recall not enjoying the native food, but I'm definitely willing to give it another shot. I'd like to do some hiking/outdoorsy things, but due to logistics will have limited equipment on me. I also love to dance.

Bonus question: what does one wear to an August wedding in Oslo?

Where to treat in Oslo

I need recommendations for a good, not-too-expensive restaurant in Oslo. I will be in Oslo this weekend, and want to take my wife out for dinner on her birthday on Saturday. Bagatelle is out of my league but I would love to take her somewhere really nice. It does not have to Norwegian cuisine, although that is a plus. We are staying close to the Karl Johanns gate if that helps you in making a recommendation.

What to do in Oslo when poor?

Where to spend my days in Oslo I have been planning a trip to Oslo for a couple months so that I can meet up with a friend of mine who recently moved there. It is only now that I have booked the tickets that I realized I have no clue where to visit while I am there.

Cost is an issue, both my girlfriend and I are students and both of us are poor even by student standards.

In addition to any locations you might be able to recommend, if you have any other advice that could help us have a good time it would be appreciated by us greatly.

Pre-New Year's in Oslo?

Should I go to Oslo at the end of December? I'm considering hopping a cheap flight to Oslo (from Edinburgh) during the gap in my holidays - probably Dec. 26 to 29. Should I bother? Will things be open? Any hostels and activities/excursions to recommend to a solo traveler?

I'd rather not go if I'm just going to be wandering around the downtown of the city for two days, unable to get into anything. (I've visited before, very briefly, and am hoping to see more than the wandering-round-for-an-afternoon thing.) Am curious about any kind of daytrips out of the city that would expose me to more of Norway's scenery.

Where Should I Study Abroad?

I’m studying abroad in September, and I’m considering (in order of current preference): Hong Kong, Oslo, Singapore, Uppsala (Sweden), University of the West Indies, and a variety in Australia/New Zealand (likely Melbourne). I can figure out which school suits my needs best, but I’m looking for information and advice on the locales themselves. (more inside) I’m going into my 3rd year of law at the University of Toronto, and I’m looking to have a nice, travel-oriented study abroad. I’ve done a semester in London and Paris in undergrad, and I’m looking for something different and exciting, which is likely why I’m leaning towards Hong Kong. So, I’m looking to you for any of the following: Anecdotes from your time living/studying abroad/traveling to these places; Info on how difficult weekend trips would be from that locale; any interesting books on travel to that area (not Lonely Planet, but something, fiction or non, that helps to get a good feel of life there – a la From Paris to the Moon or Red Dust, off the top of my head); or just plain ol’ advice on what you’d recommend. Any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks.

And FYI – I’m big into music, exploring urban cities, wilderness and trying new things…and I've also gone to the usual travel guide books as sources, so I'm looking for more personal opinions...
