I have been looking for an Ubuntu users group in New York, N.Y. Does anyone know of such a thing? That is - a group of users (with a few enlightened and charismatic geeks among them), for mutual support, learning, and troubleshooting.
(I'm not talking about learning Linux, now - just making the best of Ubuntu!)
Ubuntu is a beautiful thing, and when it 'just works', it just works. But often it...well, doesn't, and you have to find a workaround. The online Ubuntu community is great, but it would be nice to tear my hair out (and exult in my occasional success) among flesh-and-blood people.

I'm about to get a brand new PowerBook and would like to be able to run OSX, Linux, and run Windows applications. VPC is one option, but isn't there a Linux version that will run Windows applications? If so, what is it, how well does it work, and how best should I setup the computer to use it? Dual boot? Boot from within OSX? Multiple partitions, one for each OS? Since this laptop will be brand new, I'd like to take the opportunity to get everything setup right. Oh yeah, I'd also like to give OpenOffice a try (on the OSX install), any words of wisdom for me there?

I switched over from my Windows desktop to a Mac, and I loved it. Unfortunately the Mac had to go back to it's original owner. I've tried various distros of Linux and none of them seem to satisfy my OS X addiction.
Can anyone recommend an OS that will tide me over until I can get the money for another Mac?

What would be a good way to do an absolutely minimal installation of Debian Linux (or a distro based on it) and then install what I need as I need it using apt-get? The system would need to have decent hardware support (ie. work with my cable modem) but, apart from that, contain the minimum required to boot the system and run apt-get.
