About a decade ago, a book called "Delaying The Real World" came out, and it detailed ways to travel the US and the world and listed many organizations and ways to stay in a place for free and communally, while also being of service in some way. Is there another, more recent guide to ding this, or does anyone have resources for how to do this? I know/have done WWOOF and Workaway, but many of my destinations are cities and do not have these options (NOLA, Portland, the PNW in general, Nashville, Santa Cruz, Northhampton Mass, Provincetown). Thanks!
Husband and I are heading to New Orleans for Thanksgiving and I have a three part question. We are driving from Austin and just booked a hotel in the French Quarter from Wednesday to Sunday. It will be our first time there. I saw this question from 2009 and this one from 2013 which are both very helpful. My questions: 1) what should first-time visitors do to soak it in? 2) are there Thanksgiving related events or meal recommendations? 3) How is the drive from Austin to NOLA and are there any noteworthy stops? About us: originally from Northeast, just moved to Austin this Fall, love ethnic food, do not need turkey or traditional Thanksgiving fare, like visiting new cities and spending hours walking around.
So, have been vegan for just a little while now, and living in San Francisco, it's been great. However, I have a trip to New Orleans planned in a couple weeks which wouldn't worry me that much except I'm meeting my folks there and they're definitely not vegan. [more inside]
Traveling to NOLA and I have two questions: I read a really great article about Jean and Pierre Lafitte in the New Yorker or Harpers or maybe it was a podcast on This American Life (?). It was beautifully written and very dramatic, and now I can't find it. Hope me! Also, recommendations for NOLA-typical foods that are usually gluten-free (instead of gluten-free specific restaurants). Thank you! [more inside]

Drinking outdoors in New Orleans: I'm planning a picnic with a large group of people in a New Orleans city park. I know outdoor drinking is permitted in New Orleans as long as the alcohol is consumed in a plastic cup and not the original container. My question is, can I bring a cooler of beer and wine to a city park, and serve the drinks in plastic cups? In other words, am I legally permitted to have open glass or metal containers outdoors as long as they're in a cooler?

Where can I find a digital copy of Bobby Loveless' 'Night Owl'? It's an old rock and roll tune (late fifties - early sixties) which was hugely popular in Louisiana (and throughout the Delta region). I have been looking for it on behalf of my father-in-law, who is a huge fan of this era's music? It's pretty obscure, I acknowledge.
