What Is That Thing Stuck To My Orange/Avocado?

What do you call the dried stem-stump stuck to an orange/lemon/avocado? A coworker called it a "pip" but I said that term referred to the seeds. Wikipedia says that "pip" means any small, countable object and gives the spots on dice as an example. So theoretically, I guess "pip" works. But I think there must be an official name and there's clearly already variation in popular terminology¹.

I'm looking for what you personally call them (and maybe what region you are in?) and what The Botanical Term is.

¹Actually, I don't call them anything other than "dammit get off there so I can cut through the fruit".

(UK) mobile phone operator?

Is their a "decent" UK mobile phone operator? The problem with internet in general is that people only ever post a forum post, tweet a tweet, etc, etc about mobile phone operators when something goes bad.

So which network have you been pleased with? I'm talking in terms of price, coverage and customer service.

I've been with Orange, T-Mobile and o2, the worst probably being T-Mobile and the best probably o2.

I would consider 3 but their network coverage isn't that great where I live.

Where can I buy an orange tree in DFW? I'm looking for a small one that would fit on my patio (in a pot). Searching nurseries in the area doesn't give detail on what they have. Satsumas would be perfect, but I'd be satisfied with most any citrus.

Does anyone remember an orange drink called RealGold Orange Juice? It was a concentrate that came in a little can about the size of a can of tomato paste? This was about 30 plus years ago and I remember my grandma always bought it.

Need a foundation that won't turn orange

Recommendations for not-too-expensive foundation that won't turn orange on my very pale ivory skin? I am pale enough that I can usually buy foundation in one of the two lightest shades in any given line. My two most recent failures were Mary Kay's both full and medium coverage foundations. Both turn orange on me, no matter how lightly I try to apply them. Previously I'd been using CoverGirl something or other, with the same problem.

I do use concealer but I have severely dark blue/purple undereye circles, reddish old acne scars, and the occasional red pimple, so I have a lot of skin tone variation. I don't know if all these powdered "Bare Minerals" knockoffs (for example, L'Oreal's Bare Naturale) can handle that much coverage, and they seem to be messy (as in, you get powder everywhere).

I need something affordable too, so preferably something I can pick up in a drugstore or Wal-Mart, not something Sephora-exclusive. What doesn't turn orange on you?

If we don't name him soon, he'll be Thumbsy Meowlebottome Junior the Third.

Name my kitten! Relevant info below. My family has always had a Big Fat Orange Cat. Since I moved out, my parents' BFOC has died, and my partner and I (and her Big Fat White Cat) bought a house. So: new kitten! But what to name him?

Previous BFOCs' names: Miro, Shrimpy, and Scooby.

Names of other pets in our household: Bella (cat) and Hazard (dog).

Previous cat names: Sprocket, Worm, Oreo, Foot Foot.

Kitten details: orange; male; blue eyes; he's got two thumbs on each front foot and one thumb on each back foot.

I've nicknamed him Thumbsy but I was thinking of something a little more . . . I don't know. Dignified? I like Salvador (as in Dali) or Dali (as in Dali), but with Dali he'll always be confused for a Dolly, Texas pronunciation considered. My partner's not that thrilled about Salvador, either. And nothing Hemingway related, though he's polydactylic; I'm not a Hemingway fan, to say the least.

Your suggestions are welcomed! I can't keep calling him Kitteh (there's some scale for ya).

What designer/brand of men's dress shirt features one odd colored orange button, at the bottom, on the front? I was at a conference today, and noticed a guy wearing a dress shirt that featured one odd orange button at the bottom of the shirt. I almost made a joke of it, but later noticed 2 other guys wearing similar shirts with the strange odd orange button. And by odd I mean that all the other buttons on the shirt were of a color matching the shirt, whilst this one button at the bottom was orange. The shirts also featured a pattern that was noticeable on the inside of the collar and cuffs.

Please help me minimize the damage from a macbook/orange juice incident.

I just spilled about 3 tablespoons of an orange juice/perrier mix on my macbook. I vacuumed up the liquid immediately and compressed-aired the bejeezus out of it. What other things should I be doing to prevent a total breakdown? I spilled the orange juice on the keyboard, but some got into the screen as well. All the keys seem to be working, and I've rebooted with no problem. There's a fist-sized patch on the screen that soaked up some liquid and is noticeably lighter but seems to be drying slowly.

I'll be spending the day backing things up and praying because I know that orange juice can't be good--but is there anything in particular I should do?

A rocket launch? Near San Francisco? What the hell did I see tonight? Okay, honestly, I try to avoid UFOFilter questions, but I saw something wacky tonight. My fiancée and I were walking east on 16th, about to cross Dolores. In the southeast sky we saw an orange flame which flickered and puffed like looking up the tail of a rocket. It continued to get smaller and smaller (though it continued to flicker) until finally it got too small to keep a steady eye on and we lost it.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a plane or helicopter. The color of the light emanating from it was a really deep orange, and there were a couple of other aircraft in the sky at about the same distance to provide comparison. The way the light was fluctuating too was particularly unique, even in tonight's windy and turbulent atmosphere.

Anything go up today that I might have seen? I realize there's probably not many rocket launch sites remotely close to here. Or just chalk this one up to mysteries of the unexplained?

UK Mobile phone monthly contract recommendations? My current contract with T-Mobile is up next month, and it's costing me way too much.

I need roughly 3 hours and 300 texts a month, but I also need to be able to make short calls and send texts to abroad relatively frequently.

I also travel to Europe and North America around three or four times a year, so ideally roaming would be somehow included or cheap.

Currently I'm also charged for calling Voicemail, so if that would be included, great.

I pay around £45 a month at the moment, but bills have gone up to £70 with roaming. I'd ideally like to reduce my payments.

So, on the basis of that, what can you recommend? I stopped into the Carphone Warehouse, and the guy basically said O2 was pretty good, but didn't really develop anything beyond that.

Peppy Broadband in Paris

My girlfriend and I are moving into an apartment in the 12th arrondissement of Paris. We'd like to be able to stream video and download various things at high speed and we're trying to figure out which service to sign up for. Having a fast connection is only second in importance to reliability. Everyone seems to have Orange ADSL but I've also heard people talk about Numericable. Do any of you have experience with either of these? Are there any other options that you'd recommend?

A lot of these come in packages with TV options. I'm having difficulty figuring out if most of the providers support HD. If I get an Orange ADSL package, will I be getting an HD box? My French isn't so great...

As a side note, we're dying without access to high speed Internet. The quicker they are to install it, the better :) I'd rather not wait another month to have fast internet.

Acquiring iPhones as new residents of France.

Best options for a expatriate living in Paris who wants an iPhone? Lack of French language experience making it difficult. (French residents/speakers take a look please!) I am heading out to the Avenue des Champs-Élysées' Orange store later today to purchase two iPhones (one for myself and one for my girlfriend). We were there earlier this week and it seemed like the man who helped us was trying to take advantage of our lack of French language knowledge. He was trying to have us sign up for an extremely expensive plan and then call to switch it at the end of the month. I didn't feel good about the whole thing so we left and came back later.

I looked online at the various plans offered and they seem to pale in comparison to what I got with AT&T in the United States. For 300 minutes with unlimited SMS/calls on nights and weekends it seems to be 80€/month per line. That's all the information I could retrieve from the french orange website.

Could the French speakers/residents of askmefi give me some help in choosing a plan? What do you recommend for two new residents of France for the iPhone? I don't even know if they have family plans available or an option so we can call each other for free.

I need some suggestions for covers or original songs by performers who are "out of their league." I need to find some music by performers who have either recorded a cover of a tune outside of their own particular style ( for example, Snoop Dogg's "My Medicine" or Faith No More's cover of "Easy.") This could include performers who take an original song and "turn it" into their own style ( Pat Boone's entire "In a Metal Mood" comes to mind, or many of the Cash covers that were put out on his last albums) or those who choose to keep the song in relatively original form.

I see that there have been previous questions about metal covers, but not really anything covering the whole spectrum.

What are your favorites?

What is this black thing I found on the inside of my orange?

producefilter: I found a black dot on the inside of an orange slice (the orange is not rotten). What is it? After cutting open an orange I just bought today, I found a black dot near one of the ends of a slice. It's definitely not mold. I cut the section out and examined it but still couldn't really tell what it was. The black substance was mushy and didn't look like it was a bug of any sort. Okay, here's a picture. LEINK

Otherwise, the orange was delicious and nourishing.

Where around socal can I meet other aspiring electronic do-it-yourselfers? [backyard imagineering] I'm having a hard time finding fellow young folks (I'm 21) who read and understand the liking of MAKE magazine... people who like to take things apart and play with electronics.

Looking for others interested in figuring out Arduino boards, LEDs and automation stuff and I desperately need someone who can teach me some new tricks.

Ideas to cut the bitter taste of orange rinds

I LOVE my new juicer but the oranges betray me. I just bought a Breville Compact Juicer and I luuuurve it. There is truly nothing more joyous than pulverizing fruit first thing in the morning. But my dilemma is with the oranges - a staple of morning smoothies, I'm sure you'd agree - and specifically the rinds, which are insanely bitter. Obviously I could peel them before juicing but that kind of defeats the ease of the juicer in the first place. What I'm wondering is if there are any food and cooking able people out there that may know a tasty way to balance the bitterness of the orange rinds. Sugar? Yogurt? Bananas? Not much seems to be cutting it. Thanks!

Why won't my Nokia E51 access Orange's 3G network?

Why won't my Nokia E51 access Orange (UK)'s 3G network? So I got this new Nokia E51, unlocked. Its tech specs are supposed to be GSM 850/900/1800/1900, UTMS 850/2100. I've had no problems accessing Rogers/Fido's 3G UTMS network on the 850 band in Canada, but since I've returned to the UK I can only access the 2G network through Orange. I'm on PAYG if it's relevant. I was under the impression that Orange's 3G network in the UK operates on the 2100 band. The settings on the phone are to "dual-mode" (GSM/UTMS) so I don't think that's the problem. I can access data services (very slowly) so I know the WAP settings etc are correct too. Any thoughts?

Commuting from South Orange County to LA environs?

I'm looking for jobs in Santa Monica, Burbank, etc., but I live in South Orange County. What are my options for going between work and home? Here is my short list:
1) Use my car and ask for flexible start and end times to avoid traffic.
2) Use the Metrolink (I've never ridden the Metrolink before) and have a beater car waiting for me at Union Station. Can I get 3G access while riding the Metrolink?
3) Rent out my house and find a cheap cheap place to live in LA.
4) Rent out my house and move back in with my parents (they live east of downtown).
5) Live with my parents during the week, go back home during the weekend.

Oranges make me sweat. You? Know why? It's pretty simple: biting into a tart orange causes my face to break out into sweating almost immediately. The sweating sticks around for a minute or two and dissipates. Just smelling fresh orange smell can elicit the response. Lime and lemon don't seem to do it, but then again I'm not eating as much of those.

Does this happen to you? Do you have any idea why this happens?

Which Orange Box to Buy for a PS3/Mac User

Which Way to Go on Valve's Orange Box: the PS3, or Apple Boot Camp. A Two-Part Question. I have both a new, powerful Mac and a PS3. I'm salivating over Valve's Orange Box (containing all Half Life 2 content, Portal, and Team Fortress 2.)

Now the trick is, in which format would I purchase the game?

The PS3 version would cost around $60, and while I hear it's a serviceable port, it's supposedly not the best.

The PC version would be $35, but I'd have to finally get a copy of Windows that can recognize all four cores on my Mac Pro. So it'll actually be MORE expensive, but I imagine a better overall experience. Also, this would not be the only use I'll ever have for Boot Camp, just the impetus to start.

So, the main question: Which way would you recommend I go?

Follow up: If Boot Camp, what's the best OS to get for a 4-core system, assuming gaming is the only use.

Ugh, the limitations of the OC.

I'm looking for a comfortable place to study near Irvine or Costa Mesa, preferably open past 8pm? The Irvine/Costa Mesa area is a pretty good halfway point between where my boyfriend and I are each individually based. Of course there is the obvious knowledge that practically nothing stays open in Irvine later than 8-9pm, so I'm having trouble finding anything other than the UCI Library that would be an appropriate place to study. Neither of us goes to UCI and would prefer not to pay for metered parking, thus nixing the library option for now.

I've tried various locations of Coffee Bean, Peet's, etc. (no Starbucks please, its odious and equally freezing). Can you recommend a place I haven't thought of to study in or around Costa Mesa or Irvine? An ideal place would be of moderate temperature, can be busy or not, can be quiet or not, just looking for a good study vibe.
