Open Source Social Networking Web Template?

I am not a programmer. I just know basic html and I design web sites in Front Page using tables. That's it. So, the question is, is there some sort of open source...thing...that will allow me to make a web site like myspace, such that members of a certain group of people will be able to come there and each sign up for an account, and make their own user page, and link to each other as they wish? Open Source Too Open for Me

What type of open source software should I use to disseminate information I have collected over the years? I have a HUGE series of links on a topic that I would like to start sharing with friends and the net as a whole. I am having trouble deciding what to use to post it: CMS (like PHPNuke or Joomla), Wiki, Blog (like WordPress or MT), or just a bookmark manager (like SiteBar). [more inside]

I'm looking for BlackBerry software, specifically something that will be more like Outlook.

I've been searching for a while now and it seems to me that BlackBerry is very limited when it comes to programs. I also have a distaste for how it differs from Outlook. I'm starting to wish I had purchased something more compatible with Windows software. From my understanding, there is a void of any BlackBerry opensource software? I'm a student so don't have the cash to buy overpriced programs. If anyone knows of anything that might work with BlackBerry, I would appreciate suggestions. I'm on the 7250.

Why shareware or freeware?

I am working on an academic project in which a significant question has come up -- why do people distribute software as freeware (not open source) or shareware in situations where it is just as easy to distribute it commercially, using systems like Palmgear or Handango? Is it because developers don't think these projects are as valuable, or are there other reasons? Does anyone have either written evidence or personal experiences to share?

Looking for a good to-do list application (Windows XP)

Looking for a good to-do list application (Windows XP).
I used to use Microsoft Outlook with some vb behind it, and especially liked the ability to send Action Items between coworkers. However I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird for personal use and haven't seen any plugins for this. Integrated Time Tracking and remote access would be a plus. Open Source and or freeware is nice but not essential. Any recommendations that meet some subset of this criteria? Or should I get to coding...

Resources for making handheld gaming device

I saw a cool microcontroller project on slashdot, and dredged up my old dream of making an open-source, open-spec competitor to the GameBoy. Surely somebody else out there is doing that kind of thing (not GameBoy programming, but making entirely different handheld game devices).

What's the best forum, resource, or website to pursue information about this kind of project?

Document tracker

I need a web application to help me with trafficking certain documents through my firm. Without speccing it in detail, it should involve contributors being able to upload documents along with metadata. Those documents and metadata should show up in a queue. Status emails should be sent at specific junctures that are triggered by date, time, or the actions of other users on the documents. Users would have varying permissions to view, change, delete, edit, etc. various docs.

First, is there anything open source or commercial that does this? If not, what would be the specific skill sets I should look for in finding someone to build it? What would be the expected hourly rate to accomplish it?

Help me set up a photo sales site, please

I have to set up a relatively simple photo sales site for a friend (as the only halfway tech person she knows). What's the latest technology in open-source search engines for private websites?

The last time I had to set up a search engine for a basic web site, swish-E was the free indexer of choice. However, its relevance sorting and other features (as I remember them) leave much to be desired in today's world, where everyone expects every search engine to be as good as Google. What's the LAMP favorite nowadays? Where is the interesting development happening in open-source search index and query service?

Why do ordered lists in open source documentation start with zero?

I've been reading a lot of open source software documentation lately, and I'm wondering why all the ordered lists start with zero? Here's an example.
