This Cnet article got me thinking. I work as a Business Analyst, and as part of my job I do a lot of QA, requirements gathering and refining, user documentation, and other things. Is this a skill set that would be useful to any open source projects? When I've looked in the past, it's seemed like mainly people were looking for coders and testers. It seems like a great way to do some volunteer work and learn new technology and methodologies (different SDLC models, for instance), but I don't know if middle men like me have a place in the open source world.

Can anyone suggest a good, relatively simple open-source or low-cost file/client management program suitable for use by a small law firm? The software should be able to schedule/calendar, manage documents, track tasks/to-dos, and associate all of these things according to particular clients/matters. Something that syncs between machines is a definite plus, as is something that isn't a resource hog. We manage the accounting side separately, so that needn't be a component. [more inside]
My friend wants to create a website that promotes political awareness by tracking congressional legislation, letting users discuss and vote on bills, and monitoring the votes of their politicians. Does a website like this already exist, and if not, how do we launch it as open source, but keep the user data (e.g. login information, profiles) private, like LiveJournal, SourceForge, Connotea, Reddit, and Wikipedia? A family member is working on a development project in Africa which will involve setting up a database of patient records in rural medical clinics. There are some cheap computers out there now, but only a few solutions consider the cost and unreliability of power in such regions. He also needs something which runs a standard operating system, so the OLPC computer isn't right. The best I've found so far is the Inveneo project, which was actually designed with such communities in mind. I'm wondering if there are any other solutions that MeFi community members might know of which are comparable to the one offered by Inveneo? [more inside]
