A simple matter-manager for a small law firm

Can anyone suggest a good, relatively simple open-source or low-cost file/client management program suitable for use by a small law firm? The software should be able to schedule/calendar, manage documents, track tasks/to-dos, and associate all of these things according to particular clients/matters. Something that syncs between machines is a definite plus, as is something that isn't a resource hog. We manage the accounting side separately, so that needn't be a component. [more inside]

How do I create an open-source website?

My friend wants to create a website that promotes political awareness by tracking congressional legislation, letting users discuss and vote on bills, and monitoring the votes of their politicians. Does a website like this already exist, and if not, how do we launch it as open source, but keep the user data (e.g. login information, profiles) private, like LiveJournal, SourceForge, Connotea, Reddit, and Wikipedia? Can non-programmers suggest open source apps?

I have an idea for a cool (though not very utilitarian) open source app, but I have zero programming experience beyond some very elementary applescript. Can I still suggest the program on a site like sourceforge.net and still have "ownership" of the project? Not for profit, but just to guide its development.

Ultra low-power computer for rural medical clinics in Africa?

A family member is working on a development project in Africa which will involve setting up a database of patient records in rural medical clinics. There are some cheap computers out there now, but only a few solutions consider the cost and unreliability of power in such regions. He also needs something which runs a standard operating system, so the OLPC computer isn't right. The best I've found so far is the Inveneo project, which was actually designed with such communities in mind. I'm wondering if there are any other solutions that MeFi community members might know of which are comparable to the one offered by Inveneo? [more inside]

InDesign sucks, got anything else?

We (my ESL company in Beijing) are looking for a cross-platform (the person in charge of editing is using a mac, which...I...never...NO! and thus stems our problem), open-source, multi-lingual publishing software to support an in-house magazine we're trying to get started. It's gotta be something similar to InDesign, but it also has to be something we can train staff on who aren't, y'know, proficient in English. Any ideas? [more inside]
