Help me find a good programmer community for my research...

I am an academic who studies things like online communities and entrepreneurship. I would like to conduct a survey of open source and non-open source developers to see their commitment to helping out other programmers and their attitudes to entrepreneurship. When I last did research on this, Sourceforge was the place to go, but I have been outside of this world for awhile and it has moved on, perhaps to Github? Please help me figure out a good site to survey! Details inside... [more inside]

Why shareware or freeware?

I am working on an academic project in which a significant question has come up -- why do people distribute software as freeware (not open source) or shareware in situations where it is just as easy to distribute it commercially, using systems like Palmgear or Handango? Is it because developers don't think these projects are as valuable, or are there other reasons? Does anyone have either written evidence or personal experiences to share?

Top open source projects?

I am putting together some research, and wanted to poll fellow MeFiers about what they think are the five (or two or ten) most influential or important open source projects, currently being worked on and why. Linux and Firefox are obvious, so what others would qualify -- Gaim? OpenCRX? I want to know your list, and why these would make it. [more inside]
