iTunes has a nice interface but it sucks deep down. Is there a good open-source iTunes alternative for Windows? Linux and Mac OS are nice but not a necessity. [more inside]
I've been working on an open source project hosted on github. The code (js+react) is just about ready for a big public launch, but I'd like to make sure people have as few reasons as possible to dismiss it. What are your pain points when it comes to external libraries and frameworks? Lack of a clear tutorial? Missing or ugly API docs? What makes you likely to hit the back button?
I am an academic who studies things like online communities and entrepreneurship. I would like to conduct a survey of open source and non-open source developers to see their commitment to helping out other programmers and their attitudes to entrepreneurship. When I last did research on this, Sourceforge was the place to go, but I have been outside of this world for awhile and it has moved on, perhaps to Github? Please help me figure out a good site to survey! Details inside... [more inside]
We're building a website for seniors and want to make it easy for them to get into bulletin board-style discussions that you can register for with Facebook or other really easy login, similar to the forums at Gawker. Is such a thing freely available somewhere? We've been experimenting with BBPress but so far it seems a little bit hard for our audience to get into, unless maybe there is some module out there that makes it easier?
Which open source products do you use that have lousy documentation? [more inside]
Is it time to abandon LibreOffice/OpenOffice and go back to MS Office instead? [more inside]
Question: how do I go about releasing a card game into print-on-demand format while retaining commercial rights? (I want to make it available for hobbyists and players, but don't want a company to scoop my design and sell it without attribution). I make card games as a hobby, and want to release them into the wild (so the term goes). I just don't want to yield commercial rights, since there's nothing worse than watching someone pull a Thomas Edison on your Tesla-esque ideas. Some people suggested looking at DrivethruCards.com and a few other places (Cards Against Humanity uses a free-license concept I'd love to know more about).
Card Against Humanity is famously available as a PDF to download and print your own copy of the game for free. What are some other games that do this as well? I love the idea of a library of games that we can build ourselves, customize as we wish, etc, etc.
What is the best open-source iTunes alternative in 2013? Details inside. [more inside]
I have a video thanking funders that is scheduled to go live for National Philanthropy Day on Friday. I thought I had student composed and performed music to go with the video, but this morning I learned that I don't. Can you point me toward any on-line source for peppy, modern-ish (ie: not classical), instrumental music recordings that are free for public use?
I'm looking for examples of open source projects whose names are a spin on the name of an incumbent software, particularly a commercial/proprietary one. [more inside]
Our academic software project needs a self-hosted software gallery or "store", not to sell anything but rather to let people find and download software. I think what would work well is a store/gallery system similar to http://apps.usa.gov and http://apps.shopify.com (except our software is not mobile, but rather desktop software). Does anyone know of an open-source "app store infrastructure" system that we could use as a starting point? [more inside]
I am looking for an open-source / commons repository of any spoken language. Preferably free, otherwise just well-formatted. [more inside]
Open source software is considered trustworthy because anyone can validate the source code and hold the developer accountable. Usually developers will also make compiled binaries available for convenience. How can we know that these binaries are compiled from the same source code the developer published, and not a malicious variant of it? [more inside]

Your job requires you to do multimedia work from time to time but gives you only a standard Windows install with Office and MS Paint to do it with. Installing anything new requires a call to IT. Your nonprofit employer currently has no budget to buy you the software you need. What cheap or free utilities, plug-ins or browser extensions do you install while waiting for the clouds to open and copies of, say, Adobe CS Master Collection and Final Cut Pro to fall from the sky? [more inside]
I lease a massive server that I am underutilizing. I'd like to use up to 8TB/month of transfer and 500GB of disk space to make the world a better place. I am already seeding Ubuntu distros, Project Gutenberg, and Pearl Jam shows, and I'm looking for more ideas.
I occasionally contribute tutorials to open source projects and I'm looking for a standard Web page template I can use for these. Although I know HTML/CSS and could write one from scratch, I'd rather spend that time writing more (or better) documentation for the projects. Do you know of any simple, nice looking, open source templates I could use? [more inside]

I have a really interesting idea for a web app that I've been kicking around for a while. Today I discovered a site that implements some of the core functionality, but seems to be a low-priority side project for the developer. I'm thinking about asking if he wants to work together. Good idea? [more inside]
I need to compile an open-source software package, originally intended for a POSIX machine, in Visual Studio. I am comfortable with the ./configure > make > make install cycle, having done it many times, but I have never used VS in my life. Can someone explain to me like I am six, what I would do to begin doing this in VS? I can't make a makefile, because configure is a bash script. I realize I could use MinGW or Cygwin, but I've been asked to avoid that if possible. I already have VS (C++ version) and also SDK installed on a Win 7 box. Let's assume for this question that using a pre-built binary is not an option.

PDF-filter: I'm running a website that allows users to upload files. I'm looking for a converter that would allow User B to view a files uploaded by User A, even if User B doesn't have the same software used to develop the file. My guess is converting everything (that's not a simple image) to PDF would work, but my Google-fu is failing me and I can't find a PHP script or Apache module that will do this. [more inside]
Dear HiveMind, please help me think of a name for a new web project I'm building. It's essentially a "genealogy search engine in a box", based on a customized build of Apache Solr. It will allow moderately tech savvy genealogy geeks, whether individual genealogists or small genealogy organizations, an easy way to index and search datasets of names and any related data, with a nice front end UI for doing searches. Notable features include faceted search (by record year, record town(s), record source, etc.), soundalike surname searching, customizable given name synonyms (i.e. searching for "Becky" also finds Rebecca), and pop-up Google Maps linked to record locations. And the entire project will be open source. The project is already about 90% completed, but I need something snappy to call it before I can release it. Ideas welcome!
I'm wondering how I can do contextual search and image search on a local server volume and have this be a service available to everyone on our network. Open source methods are preferred. [more inside]
