I need to set up a community site that also has a Digg-like community news section, and am trying to find open source packages that will do the job. I looked at Pligg, but am wary of using it (reasons inside). I wonder if Drupal will work. Can you folks shed some light?

I want to introduce a group of students to how open source software is localized (translated). What I am looking for is some software (preferebly cross platform) which uses text/po/mo files to store the text strings for each language.

Can anybody recommend an open source 'external' site monitoring utility for *nix? By external, I mean the tool should sit on a server that's separate to the one the site being monitored is sitting on. The tool should make regular requests to the monitored site and should send an alert if the page is not returned within a specified time.

Simple (I hope) question: I'm thinking that in the next year I might buy a Mac. I'm also interested in Linux, though, and I've thought about buying a "white box" PC to run Linux and open-source apps. I don't really understand the relationship between OSX and 'nixes all that well. Does OSX run Linux-type programs too? (TIA)

Is there any reliable, secure, open source and/or freeware online store software that supports digital downloads? If so, any that allow the site adminstrator to do nifty stuff like set a time limit on how long after paying users can download?

I need a package to facilitate collaboration among a group of people spread across the Internet/globe. Ideally it would track staff, projects, to-do lists and contacts. Open source (PHP/mySQL) would be ideal. Any suggestions?

Two XP questions in a row! Does anybody know how to remove the "Windows cannot open this file" dialog box that offers a web service? I'd like this to act like it did in previous versions of Windows, just going directly to the "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" dialog. Google has failed me.

My laptop has taken to switching itself off at random intervals, but only at my parents or in-laws houses. The general consensus is that these houses are hotter than my own and it may be just enough to upset my system.
Can anyone recommend a good freeware (pref OpenSource) program to check up on the internal temperatures of the system? I'm running WinXP.
