I run a retail business in Toronto, Canada. It's an independently owned business--like a mom and pop store. I need to fire someone because he's incompetent and his presence actually makes more work for the other staff. I have emailed and texted with this staff member (who has worked with us for 13 months) regarding his considerable transgressions but we do not have "paperwork" or "forms" in the traditional sense. His work never improves.
What exactly do I have to do to fire him without worrying about legal issues? Two weeks pay? Three? Does the firing need to be written in addition to verbal or is just verbal fine? What's the best way for me to cover my ass? [more inside]

My fiance and I made the mistake of renting from a young friend of mine who just bought her first house here in London, Ontario, Canada. We have been here since November 1st with nothing but trouble - construction which pushed back our move-in date by two weeks and then continued for weeks afterwards, incredibly loud dogs (she has 3 dogs upstairs who are almost always in cages) not to mention domestic fights from upstairs. I've heard that one can sever certain contracts they sign in Ontario if it's within the first 10 days of signing. If this is true, does it also apply to a lease on a house?

I need to pass a legal exam. Trouble is, I'm no legal genius and I haven't sat an exam in decades. How would you get down to cramming the facts? [more inside]

Ontario employment law: I'm quitting my job to go back to school full-time in September. I'm currently employed full-time as an engineer. I want to tell my employer as far in advance as possible that I am leaving so that everyone knows what's going on, but I want to minimize the risk of finding myself unemployed and unpaid early. How much notice should I give?
