landlord and tenant dispute

It's 7:30 on a Sunday night and my landlord has contractors varnishing the floors of the downstairs apartment. It is filling the house with a noxious odour and loud banging noises. I live on the top floor of a house with two other apartments below in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We were not informed that there would be workmen in the building. Is he within his rights to have contractors doing work at this hour?

I think she's using Rogers Express or Extreme Plan. If I'm understanding things correctly, according to the Ontario Landlord/Tenant Act, Canadian landlords can't increase a rent until 12 months after a tenancy has started. What do I do? [more inside]

Is it okay to sever a new lease within a certain amount of time in Ontario?

I've heard that one can sever certain contracts they sign in Ontario if it's within the first 10 days of signing. If this is true, does it also apply to a lease on a house?

What do you wish you knew before becoming a landlord?
