I need suggestions for a name for an online trading platform for work, does anyone have any ideas?

Can your average person who spends their entire workday in front of a computer short the dollar online, through some sort of investing site? I'm macroeconomically literate, but know next to nothing about what sort of options are available for playing with my money. I read about day-trading Japanese moms making money on the currency trade, and I'd like to keep my relatively meager savings from vanishing into some Weimarish wheelbarrow-of-bills traffic jam, so...do I need to learn Japanese to do it?

Has anyone had good experience with book swapping sites? I've got lots of books to trade, and rather than sell them, I'd like to trade them for other books I want. [more inside]

I'm looking to do some casual stock trading...likely 1 or 2 trades a quarter, in amounts around $1000 or less. What online stock trader site is best for me? [more inside]

Opinions on the best online online brokerage out there right now?
I want to buy some stocks and do a little trading for myself away from my retirement account which is handled by a professional. Hard to pick between the big boys (e-trade, scottrade, etc.) or maybe there's a better option I'm not aware of.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Online brokers...there's about a zillion of the darn things. Any of the Mefi gang have experiences, good or bad, that they'd like to share to help me pick one? I'm not a day trader, I won't be doing huge amounts of transactions, but I'd like to be able to get away from the seriously high commission fees I'm paying for buy and sell orders through my current broker. (Especially since they do nothing but place the order...it's not like they offer advice or anything.)
