I'm dissatisfied with my local credit union and am interested in taking my business elsewhere. They are the only game in town, so I'm wondering how best to assess my options for online only or at least long distance friendly credit unions. [more inside]
So I have an elderly relative who is struggling with profound hearing and speech difficulties, and I'm looking for an online community for him. MetaFilter would strike him as too liberal, too young, and somewhat too outré. He's not ignorant or unsophisticated, but his views are conservative and his interest in modern culture is, well, limited. Can anyone point me toward a U.S.-based site with an active group of thoughtful, high-quality commenters and a generally conservative slant on history, politics, and current events? [more inside]

I just purchased some home automation items from Belkin and was surprised they charged me sales tax when they have no physical location in the state of Vermont. They won't reimburse me without proof from me that Vermont doesn't charge sales tax for such transactions. [more inside]
Are there any active online support groups for 9/11 survivors? I was in midtown when the WTC was attacked in 2001. That brought on several days of stressful situations for myself and others in the city (evacuating due to bomb threats, going near the site only to run for your life because fears of other buildings falling near the site, etc). I coped as everyone else did in the city, and for the past several years I've avoided most if not all 9/11 coverage. This year, the anniversary passed without me realizing it - but then on the 12th I was reading an article about first responders lobbying congress and it sent me down a rabbit hole of watching (for the first time) life news footage of the attacks. I usually use something like Opentable in the U.S. What's the best app or site with similar functionality for restaurants in Rome and Florence? [more inside]

Our wedding photographer sent us our original full resolution pictures through Dropbox. I want to put together an online album to share with guests. I usually post pictures via Picassa; is there another platform that would be better? Also, I would prefer to keep the album password protected. Relatedly, I want to print thank-you cards and a wedding album. I have looked into Artifact Uprising and MPix but would love recommendations on print services too. Thanks!
I've recently really enjoyed Jordan Peterson's psychology lectures on youtube and I'd like to find more like them. Other video lectures I've enjoyed have been Shelly Kagan's Death, and Michael Sandel's Justice. Please tell me of others so I can watch them. [more inside]
My company is looking to create an online training resource for customers and sales reps. It would need to host videos, WebEx-like training sessions, and have a searchable document database. I know there are a number of services that provide each of these individually, but I'm having trouble finding an all-in-one solution. [more inside]
I'm looking for newsy/magaziney/commentary/journalism websites with good, interesting, even inventive, uses of annotation (more interested in notes made by authors/editors than comments by readers, but that is also interesting!) in their articles. Grantland's use of annotation is a good example. Thanks for any tips!

My wife and I moved about a year ago to a town where we already had some friends, and have made new friends. Trying to invite people to play games via e-mail quickly devolves into micro-scheduling. "Big" board game nights are unwieldy and unfun. I'm looking for something that feels like it should exist, but I haven't found it yet. Full details inside: [more inside]
A friends son is very keen on creative writing - he publishes online via Reddit and his own blog. He is currently negotiating with an online gaming company (based in the Netherlands) to write dialogue for their new game that is in development (they send him prompts and basic outlines of the game sequence). Can you give me any advice about the average rates for online writing. Do you you charge by the hour or for a written piece? What would you recommend would be a good rate, considering his age (17) and his skill level (he is still in high school!). From my research I have seen a range of quotes - anything from $20 per hour or $50 per article up to $900 for skilled writers. Any advice much appreciated.
In real life women don't flirt with me, smile at me in public, or glance at me when they walk past me. However, with online dating I do really well. What gives? I'm starting to suspect I'm just really photogenic and I'm a bit of a dog in real life.

With several major (many users) social media service providers being headquartered in, or near to, San Francisco in California, what would be the effect on these services of a catastrophe e.g. earthquake, tsunami, Godzilla etc laying waste to the city? Would these services still be able to function without a HQ, senior personnel and owners, and with all of the disruption caused by such a catastrophe to their HQ host city? [more inside]

I'm trying to buy a mobile phone that is unlocked. I want to avoid getting it from the big stores in Toronto, and I am looking online for a good option. I am really not that tech-savvy, and if I had to choose between Android and iPhone, I'd go with whichever has a better deal. Ideas? [more inside]

I had a stalker years back and I was only able to shake them off by going virtually off grid. I had to stop dating online (because that's how he found me one of the times) and eventually I had to change my name, my home and my job and severe contacts with people I knew for years to get away from them. I would like to try online dating again, but this time maybe with a photo of someone with similar traits to mine, but not my real photo. [more inside]

I recently started a new job as a Project Manager for an educational travel company and would like to beef up my Excel and project management skills. I was previously managing academic research studies. While a lot of that experience is relevant, my new responsibilities are more in line with those of a formally trained/certified Project Manager and so I’d like to do some self-study outside of work. Any recommendations out there for good online coursework? [more inside]
Am looking for a free six-week-ahead online calendar. I currently use Backpackit calendar but the company stopped supporting it a few years ago plus it costs me $12/month. When I open Backpackit the calendar default view is the next six weeks. I find this incredibly useful. I have not yet found another online calendar that shows anything other than one month at a time. Any suggestions?
I own a macbook with 256 GB of space. I used to have a 1 TB backup drive but it broke, along with the majority of my media files; this is the second time in two years that I've had a hard drive go bad on me. I opted for a smaller 256 GB SSD for backup this time around as I heard they're less prone to failing, but it's too small for me to put on much besides my Time Machine backup. What options do I have to store my other files? [more inside]
Does anyone know of a good collaborative online resource that I could use to coordinate my brother's bachelor party? Essentially, I need to be able to coordinate schedules and accept suggestions and thoughts on what we can do. I'd think that there's a great collab website for this, but my google-fu is failing mightily. Help Askme-wan-kenobi, you're my only hope.
Simply stated- TurboTax is a scummy company with a checkered past that always makes me feel weird using it. Surely there has to be a spritely, young up and comer in the tax game? My taxes are pretty simple- I have a few 1099s, perilously little income and student loans out the wazoo. Nothing too weird. What else is out there?

Recently I've been trying some online dating. I often find myself looking for very specific furniture or home decor products. For example: right now I'm looking for a square basket (or open container) with a drawer in the base that measures no more than 11 inches wide and 22 inches long, and I was wondering if there was a way to search for home products by size, shape, and dimension in the same way you'd search for clothes by size?
That sounds weird writing out... But it's something I've thought about and gives me some anxiety about whether or not it's an issue. [more inside]
I want to learn math. I signed up for Khan Academy and I like the format a lot. I really like that there are short lessons that I can complete, and that the software automatically checks the answers and lets me continue when I completed a string of 5 good answers in a row (or something similar). I don't like the video explanations though. I'm just not a video person, I learn much better from text. Is there something like Khan Academy where you can do math exercises online but where the explanation is in text?
