OneNote 2007 MIA

I have lost my OneNote 2007 OPK CD - I have the case but not the image and I need it for a computer that I am fixing / restoring for a friend. I don't want an illegal download, but if anyone here can point me to a legal and quick option to get hold of the install files I would be mighty appreciative. My client holds the OEM serial.

Happy to provide legal authority (paper envelope details) if necessary.

Need help with personal knowledge management!

How are people organizing their information (professional and personal) in this day and age? What kind of system is flexible enough to cope with multiple data types (PDFs, DOCs, short text notes, hyperlinks, ...), efficient during collection (when browsing the Web, when reading documents, ...) and won't get in my way when I try to use it? (I looked into existing posts - good start, but I'd like suggestions that also incorporate whole files and not just bookmarks and snippets)

I'm trying to find a coherent system using multiple tools - mindmaps, note taking tools, file search tools and others - so that I can be more productive in storing and finding the right information. A personal Memex if you will, similar to Vannevar Bush's original idea but with proper search.

I'm an IT/Network Security Architect/Engineer. I deal with information on a daily basis - from configuration snippets and links to product documentation to written reports and form documents. Sometimes the entire document is relevant and sometimes a simple summary or just a snippet may do.

I've used mind maps (with MindManager) since 2001 and I love the concept and the tool. I've used it to take notes when studying, to create document structure and then exporting to Word, to capture notes in meetings, etc...

I've recently been introduced to Microsoft OneNote. It also seems very, very powerful in organizing information - notebooks, sections, pages, etc... all searchable and nicely integrated into Windows. I've come to rely on OneNote for screen captures, print outputs and the integration of short notes to my PDA.

I find desktop search tools (initially Yahoo's Desktop - an OEM of X1 - and now Google Desktop, with its' capability to search MindMaps...) to be also very, very good at helping find information, especially when it is in a structured document (Word, PDF, ...)

Finally I know there's other tools out there:
- Wikis (web-based and local storage) TiddlyWiki as a good example
- Evernote
- Scrapbook firefox extension (excellent for local storage of pages!)
- Delicious
- Google Notebook
- Stars and tags in Google Reader and other RSS
- others… heck, I've heard of people using iTunes to manage their PDFs!

I read Lifehacker, I do GTD (I use it in a slightly modified fashion) and I live the inbox zero concept. My issue is not so much task management as information management.

So, what kind of systems are people using for managing their information? What's the best way of keeping track of some configuration details for firewalls I work with? How can I easily store (and retrieve) interesting RSS posts? Suggestions for storing (or not) a PDF whitepaper on something?

Thanks!

What software is helpful for writing a masters thesis?

What software is helpful for writing a masters thesis? I'm working my thesis for my M.A. and I have a non-tablet PC and use OneNote a lot. What are some helpful computer programs or tips for doing research?

Here are the things I need right now:

I really need a program to allow me to take notes on PDFs directly. It seems like most of my reading is on here, and I need to be able to write in the margins like I do with actual printed things. I am broke, so I was hoping for a free program/under 30-ish dollars. Someone asked this question like two years ago, and there was not real answer.

Also, how can I import a PDF in OneNote? Actually, any tips for OneNote would be amazing.

I need a good citation program or something because Refworks has turned out to be a bust.

Is Evernote really good?

Any advice or tips are welcome.

About my thesis: I'm a communication studies ma student, and I'm writing about popular culture and politics. Specifically, I am using Barry Brummett's mosaic method in his book Rhetorical Dimensions of Popular Culture to analyze TDS and other news media surrounding Obama's race speech.

SO! If you have any research suggestions for that, that's cool too. Though, as a masters student I've taken the fundamental classes like classical rhetoric, so really abstractly related things like Aristotle's On Rhetoric (unless with a specific link to my project) I don't really need to hear.

I appreciate the help, thanks in advance.

Make my OneNote dreams come true...

Will VMWare Fusion allow me to run Microsoft OneNote smoothly? I have been wanting to trash my windows based Dell Dullspiron laptop for some time and get a Mac Powerbook. However, I love Microsoft's OneNote and it has kept me tethered to Windows (and yes I've looked at the Mac OneNote substitutes and they aren't what I want). I was complaining about this to a friend who mentioned that I can have the best of both worlds by running OneNote with VMware Fusion. From looking at the VMware web site and a few youtube videos of it in action, I must say it seems to fit the bill.

However, I would love to get some feedback from Mac users on OneNote in VMware. How is the stability? Will it significantly slow down my machine (I typically have excel, onenote, firefox, and a pdf reader open at any given time)? Any other things I ought to be wary of?

PDF text import into OneNote

How can I import PDF files as editable text in Microsoft OneNote? I have Microsoft OneNote and want to import some PDFs into it. However, the only options seems to be inserting the files as images. But I want to be able to edit the text in the PDFs within OneNote. Any tricks to do so?

How to view OneNote content on a mac?

How to access information and files embedded in Microsoft Onenote on a Mac? I finally got a mac and the only thing that I am in need of is a way to view previously made Onenote notebooks and their contents. I won't need to add to or edit the files - just view them and open the word, powerpoint, and pdf files that have been embedded in the Onenote database (not printed into the notebook pages).

For my 1st 2 years of medical school I used Onenote to store all of the syllabi (aka our textbooks), lecture information, lecture powerpoints, practice tests, and study sheets. My entire notebook is on the order of 7gb. Most of the information I would come back to is in the embedded files, not the Onenote pages, but they provide the structure. All is typed text (never used a tablet).

Because of the volume of the noteboook, it is not feasible to reorganize everything again. Not too sure how the emulator stuff works to open something under leopard, but this site says Office 2007 wouldn't work with Wine . I tried this program which seemed so perfect, but besides oddly having to execute it through command prompt to get it to work, it would not let me access the embedded files. I'd really like to avoid only being able to access it through booting into windows.

Any ideas?

How do you use OneNote?

How do you use OneNote? They are installing OneNote on our new computers at work (and eventually, I think, I'll have a tablet PC to use with it. Yay!).

I have heard a lot of people say nice things about the software, but I'm a bit confused about how to integrate it into my everyday life. Do you use it? How? Was it pretty intuitive? Is there a website that had useful info for you? (I googled around, but it's hard for me to tell what might be helpful before using the software). Thanks!

Info organizers that support popups / tooltips?

Any information organization tools out there (OneNote, TiddlyWiki, etc.) that support mouse-over, PHPXref-style popups / tooltip windows? I like to store code snips and other technical bits of info, so I'm really digging the PHPXref style of popping up detailed info on mouseOver.

However I can't find a OneNote or TiddlyWiki plugin that will do this. The best I have found so far is using TiddlyWiki and adding a tooltip library, but that seems a little tedious.

Here is an example of PHPXref in action.

Thanks in advance!

OneNote novice ISO assistance

How do I link to (not insert) a task in OneNote? I'm trying to determine whether MS OneNote (2003 SP2) will work for me. I currently make extensive use of Outlook tasks. What I'd like to do is link to (not copy) tasks within Outlook from OneNote, so that I can pull up the tasks directly from the OneNote page.

The reason copy won't work is that I want all changes to my task contents - which I perform in Outlook - to be reflected in the OneNote page.

Any OneNote gurus out there?

MSOneNote for Mac?

I was turned on to MS OneNote by someone using a Mac in a class I was taking. Now that I've bought a Macbook, I can't find a Mac version of OneNote! Help! I am a mature student who has recently returned to University. I found someone using an older Mac laptop with OneNote running on it. I ended up purchasing the Windows version for use on my laptop.

Now I'm a MacBook Pro user, and want to download OneNote for my Mac - unfortunately, the campus store tells me there is no Mac version - this appears to be the case on the Microsoft website as well. I've installed Parallells and XP on my Macbook just so I can run OneNote, however, I can't help but get this nagging feeling out of my head that I'm missing something - the girl in class with the Mac laptop was running OneNote on her Mac and it appeared to work as a standalone app w/o windows running.

Is there any path or suggestions you can make to help me out?

How do I retrieve a lost serial number

I had Micro$oft OneNote installed on my laptop. My laptop died (hard drive= OK) & I lost the install CD (which has the serial number). How do I get the serial number from the old install so I can register it on my new laptop?

So here's what I tried:

a) I connected the laptop hard drive as an external USB drive. I went to program files and started OneNote so I could look for the serial in Help -> about. But the program wont start.

b) How does one access the registry on a portable hard drive (w/o booting from it)? Would this be in the registry.

This is in or around Windows XP
