Road trip suggestions?

Road trip! My mom and I are driving from Eastern Long Island to Stillwater, OK, via (tentatively) Harrisburg PA, Charleston WV, Mammoth Cave State Park KY, St Louis MO, and Bartlesville OK. I'd like suggestions of things we might do along the way, as this breaks down to only about 5 hours of driving per day, so we have some touristy time! So at the moment we have a night at the Price Tower in Bartlesville, OK, set in stone -- but apart from that, our itinerary is mostly flexible. The current list of stops is based on searching through AskMe archives for road trip suggestions, and then dividing the distances without recommended stops into 5-hour chunks to fill our time before arriving in Bartlesville. To give you an idea of what we like, when I googled Harrisburg and Charleston I made notes of the following intriguing-sounding tourist attractions:

Harrisburg: National Civil War Museum, Sunken Gardens at Riverfront Park
Charleston: Beckley exhibition coal mine, Craik-Patton house, South Charleston Indian Mound, New River Gorge National River

As I said, apart from Price Tower, nothing, including our route, is set in stone -- we've never driven through these parts of the country before, so we're open to all suggestions.

Oh, and bonus (for me!) if you have vegan dining suggestions along that route...

how can we get married in OK without God?

We'd like to get married in Oklahoma, and we were hoping for a courtroom marriage for now with a big to-do later on, but it turns out that the state has stopped providing this service! We've googled extensively and can seemingly only find information on how to procure the marriage license itself. we have ten days after that to "get married".

We're not religious, and would strongly prefer to be married by someone other than a minister. where do we look, and who should we ask?

Is there a service that will text or email tornado warnings to me? i don't watch tv. i only listen to the radio on the work commute. i'm not sure that i'll hear the sirens. it got me thinking - is there an internet warning solution?

What's the best way for me to get internet access around Christmas in El Reno, Oklahoma? I'm going to be spending Christmas in El Reno, Oklahoma, with my SO's grandmother. She doesn't have internet access, but it'll be pretty important for me to be able to get online at least once in a while during the four or five days that we'll be there. It doesn't have to be very long--just long enough for me to check for any important e-mails.

I have a laptop with a wireless modem, but I can just as easily use some public computer. I just need to get online.

Does anyone know any good internet cafes in El Reno, or something similar?

Why is Obama advertising in Oklahoma? From what I can tell, McCain will win OK. Thirty points is thirty points, not matter how good the momentum is right now. So why spend money in Oklahoma at all?

What should a Florida teacher know about buying a home (i.e., getting a mortgage) in Oklahoma? I'm just about to finish my first year of teaching in Florida, after which my husband and I are moving to Oklahoma, where I'm originally from. We'll be crashing with my mother for a couple of months until we find a home to buy. My questions are:

1. Do I need to secure a teaching position in OK before I can start looking for a house to buy, or will mortgage lenders rely on my prior proof of income (FL paycheck stubs)?

2. What else do I need to know about this whole process? Any general advice about making this move?

I have family to stay with in Wichita, but will have to get a hotel in Albuquerque. I'm open to tips ranging from gas station rewards programs to driving tips.

Roadtrip from Chicago to Houston: How and what?

Chicago to Houston in one week, two lovely gals, one Camry: We're taking a road trip the week before July 4, starting in Chicago and ending in Houston. Any route tips? Things to see? Do? Quirky free attractions to see along the way? I'm in Chicago and she's from Houston but hasn't explored much. We're taking a week to drop her car back off starting in Chicago where we both are...we have 3-4 days to get down to Houston from Chicago and see what there is to see along the way. I'd rather not take big highways...but I've never ever ever been to the South or the Southeast, and would like to soak up as much as possible in the little time we have.

Things we like: hot springs, quirky roadside attractions, photography moments, rivers, THE BIGGEST ____, monuments, not spending a lot of money.

She's come up with 6 distinct itineraries that go in radically different directions, some involving Oklahoma and others involving Kentucky. I'm not sure what the best way is to get between here (Chi) and there and was wondering what kind of suggestions you have in mind.

I'm going to Yellowstone in May , traveling from Austin TX via New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming then back through Kansas and Oklhoma. I would really appreciate recomendations for any cool places to stop along the way. Cool museums, cheap flea markets, places to buy cool jewelry, cool parks, places to camp, vegetarian resteraunts etc. And also the best places to stay in Yellowstone as thAT's where we'll be spending most of our time.

Camping in the Arbuckle Mountain Range in Oklahoma: I need a good, quiet, private beautiful spot. My buds and I are gonna do some camping during the first weekend of April. I've gotten some ideas from colleagues about the best spots in the Arbuckle Mountain Range to camp, but I would love the Hive Mind's input.

It's gonna be 5 to 7 people (or so), all adults, and we're looking for a nice park (national, perhaps? Chickasaw National Recreation Area has been suggested), at least running water at the site, but still tent camping. We're looking for a place that is not gonna be one of those crowded, rowdy, party-killing rangers places. I'm sure we'll be rowdy enough. :D

Any suggestions? Help make this trip a camping trip to remember!

Oklahoma City jewelry? Looking for something unique / simple. Where are the coolest local jewelry stores/craftspeople/shops in the OKC/norman/edmond area? Looking for a necklace right now, but extra special bonus points if I might find an engagement ring there sometime in the future.

Not a big fan of overly gold, huge in size, wildly expensive, gaudy, or extremely boring stuff. I'm also not looking to go to the mail for chain store #307.

I'm looking for a journal article or book that addresses the first writers active in Oklahoma territory (before statehood in 1907). I've tried Google Scholar, but perhaps my Google-fu isn't as strong as it could be, because I'm not coming up with very good results. I'm trying to find a source that deals with the first authors (Native American, white, black, whomever) known to have published letters, articles, poems, or fiction in the territory that would come to be known as Oklahoma. How to find a yoga studio for beginners in Oklahoma City? I just moved to Oklahoma City. I am taking the bar in Oklahoma this summer. Having just come off of 3 years of law school, my stress level is pretty high. I'd like to start taking yoga - lots of friends have recommended it to help ease the pain of bar study. I am a beginner to yoga and new to Oklahoma, so I have no idea where to look in Oklahoma for a good class/teacher. Any suggestions or thoughts?

I'm going to Oklahoma for 4 days for a wedding. Never been there in my life. The bride-to-be keeps apologizing & warning me that since I'm from California I shouldn't expect to like it there, that it's not special & I'll probably be bored. I like proving people wrong whenever possible. Soooo tell me about this Oklahoma place I shall be visiting, oh hive mind. I hear they have beautiful mornings? And beautiful days? And there are a lot of surreys with some type of pretty fringe...? My friend's from Oklahoma City and I've been told that the wedding will be in some kind of tuscan villa (?) in Tulsa. And yes it's gonna be open bar (with sushi buffet!) so at least I know the wedding will be fun. :)

Last night, at the beginning of the Oklahoma - Nebraska game, they had a rock band doing an intro. It was a hard and fast song, with the corus of 'invincible.' It appeared to be tied into a reference for Pontiac. Does anyone know who the rock band was?

LASIK professionals in southern-central US

Need some advice regarding LASIK in the southern-central US region. (Oklahoma and surrounding states) I've finally decided that I really want to get LASIK surgery done. I've read other AskMe posts on this, regarding whether it's a good idea, as well as plenty of other resources. I'm pretty well set in my desire to do this. I've heard the horror stories, and the benefits simply outweigh the risks.

However, I'm wary about doctors and procedures. I'd rather do one eye at a time, on the chance that something could go wrong. Naturally, I'd like a surgeon here in Oklahoma, or a bordering state. I'd like any advice regarding good experiences, good surgeons, or surgeons to avoid.

Also to note, I've seen the IntraLase and wavefront/customvue technologies, and heard no extra risks involved with these. Anyone have advice regarding these particular points of LASIK?
