My Mom used to love using bath beads, but we haven't been able to find them for ages (We used to get them at a little red shop instead of a bigger store; I think it was a body shop inside of a Sears or Bay or something like that?) Anyway, I figured I would get her some for mother's day. This is turning out to be a lot more challenging than I anticipated.

[Carfilter] The oil cap on my car vibrates itself loose, causing oil to spill out onto the engine and thus wreathe my hood in some lovely smoke. Oil cap has been replaced once already to try and fix this, to no avail. What are my options?

My car, for the first time in 12 years, did not pass an emissions inspection in California. Right before this, my oil light had started to periodically blink. On inspection, my oil was very (very) low. I filled it back up after the test. What are the chances that this caused the high emissions levels?

Considering the huge amount of oil/energy expended driving trucks full of food all over the country, would it make more sense to increase our train infrastructure (is that even possible?) to move more food? That's the question, but not why I've come to Metafilter.

Can a broken dipstick cause a car to lose two quarts of oil over a couple of months? Should I just replace the dipstick, or should I have a mechanic investigate other potential problems?

So I'm looking for some hard data on the Alberta Oil Sands:
Employment rate, type of employment, demographics, who owns what, etc.
I'm finding plenty of opinion pieces, and plenty of environmental assessments, but not much hard data on the economics of it. Does anyone know where to look for this kind of information?

I'm considering purchasing a 2009 VW Jetta TDI with 12k miles. During summer months, the owner used waste oil for fuel. (no separate tank or conversion kit). But we're in the mountains, and it gets brisk even in the summer. Should I walk away altogether? Can I ask a mechanic to specifically check out the fuel injection system? What else should I ask of the mechanic? Thanks.

What are your favorite literary texts about oil and oil capitalism? I'm looking for anything from traditional realism to noir to science fiction, from poetry to film to comic books to video games to philosophy and theory. Anything could work. Bonus points if the focus is on globalization and/or Peak Oil and resource scarcity.

Please help me understand the BP oil spill. I see the footage of the oil plume and wonder how wide it is when it reaches the surface.
This question tells me why capping the pipe is not feasable. But what about creating a thermal column of warm(er) water to help "focus" the oil plume to a more concentrated area on the surface while the relief well is being drilled? Thanks for your explanations...
