Recently I was talking to someone about health related issues and she mentioned that she took fish oil ending with the broad statement that it helps with about everything. I have read over the years about how fish oil helps with menopause (which I'm beginning) and ADHD (which I have) and just about every kind of condition known. I saw a previous mefi about the inefficacy for fish oil on depression but wondered how it relates to other conditions. Googling shows all sorts of results, both positive and negative and as I am not medically inclined I'm wondering if there is any benefit to it or is better to steer clear? Anecdotal evidence too please.

I have a huge, life-determining standardized test tomorrow. A bit of ear plug got stuck inside my ear this morning when half of it ripped out as I tried to remove my earplug. Now, my ear has started hurting a little, and I'm terrified! I'm highly prone to ear infections, and am fearful of waking up with one tomorrow. It would be a huge distraction during this 3 hour test that has required months of preparation! [more inside]

We have inherited a portrait of Prof. Jacques Stock painted in the late 1930's. Based on family tradition he might have been a professor of art.
Is there some site or some way we can search the web based on the face in the portrait? We've tried many different ways to search by name and keep coming up with nothing.
The artist was a family member who died several years ago. The portrait was discovered after he died.
We do know the family member studied portraiture under Thomas Eakins, but that is about all we have to go on.
Many thanks for any help you can give.

My Mom used to love using bath beads, but we haven't been able to find them for ages (We used to get them at a little red shop instead of a bigger store; I think it was a body shop inside of a Sears or Bay or something like that?) Anyway, I figured I would get her some for mother's day. This is turning out to be a lot more challenging than I anticipated. [more inside]

[Carfilter] The oil cap on my car vibrates itself loose, causing oil to spill out onto the engine and thus wreathe my hood in some lovely smoke. Oil cap has been replaced once already to try and fix this, to no avail. What are my options? [more inside]

My car, for the first time in 12 years, did not pass an emissions inspection in California. Right before this, my oil light had started to periodically blink. On inspection, my oil was very (very) low. I filled it back up after the test. What are the chances that this caused the high emissions levels? [more inside]

Considering the huge amount of oil/energy expended driving trucks full of food all over the country, would it make more sense to increase our train infrastructure (is that even possible?) to move more food? That's the question, but not why I've come to Metafilter. [more inside]

Can a broken dipstick cause a car to lose two quarts of oil over a couple of months? Should I just replace the dipstick, or should I have a mechanic investigate other potential problems? [more inside]

So I'm looking for some hard data on the Alberta Oil Sands:
Employment rate, type of employment, demographics, who owns what, etc.
I'm finding plenty of opinion pieces, and plenty of environmental assessments, but not much hard data on the economics of it. Does anyone know where to look for this kind of information?

I'm considering purchasing a 2009 VW Jetta TDI with 12k miles. During summer months, the owner used waste oil for fuel. (no separate tank or conversion kit). But we're in the mountains, and it gets brisk even in the summer. Should I walk away altogether? Can I ask a mechanic to specifically check out the fuel injection system? What else should I ask of the mechanic? Thanks.

What are your favorite literary texts about oil and oil capitalism? I'm looking for anything from traditional realism to noir to science fiction, from poetry to film to comic books to video games to philosophy and theory. Anything could work. Bonus points if the focus is on globalization and/or Peak Oil and resource scarcity. [more inside]

Please help me understand the BP oil spill. I see the footage of the oil plume and wonder how wide it is when it reaches the surface. This question
tells me why capping the pipe is not feasable. But what about creating a thermal column of warm(er) water to help "focus" the oil plume to a more concentrated area on the surface while the relief well is being drilled? Thanks for your explanations...
