How do I (or we) speak to my manager about his increasing lack of involvement in what we feel are the core components of a product's (re)launch, especially when the stakes in the launch include: our careers, the fate of the company, and the jobs of fellow colleagues in the office? [more inside]
Quick question about the USPS: Can I ship a flat-rate Priority Mail envelope by printing postage for it online and then dropping it in a blue USPS mailbox? Or do I need to take it to a post office?
We have six Herman Miller Aeron chairs in varying states of disrepair in our office. Some need new parts and a couple don't tilt or raise properly, etc. Some were bought new and some were bought secondhand, and everything I've found online says to take them to a dealer, which I'd like to avoid (hassle, having no chairs for a while, etc). I'd like someone to come over and diagnose them and replace parts and/or fix them on-site (I'm in Manhattan). Anybody know a service that does this?
I'm really intrigued by the idea of a variable height sit/stand desk, but for a couple reasons, I'm probably stuck with my current utterly inconspicuous, heavy wood composite desk. Fortunately, the top comes off, so I think I might be able to modify the desk so that I can raise/lower the top independently of the rest of the desk. What kind of hardware would I need, and where can I buy it? [more inside]

What are your strategies for girding yourself against the chaos or banality of the modern office workplace ? How do you manage to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous requests, insanity-induced decisionmaking, and mass amounts of meaninglessness? For sure, those who are gainfully employed at this moment in history are more fortunate than they might know, but perspective is difficult to achieve, or keep, when the pile of unfinished TPS reports on the desk is about to topple over & shred your soul by a million tiny papercuts. What thoughts do you keep in your head, or spirits do you bring into your heart (or substances into your body?). Quotes, movies, books, blogs, etc.. -- all are welcome. Extra points for recommendations that are particularly geared towards 'life' in a tech / software company.

Have you used CrossOver Linux (the Codeweavers version of Wine)? Does it work well with MS Office 2007? I've installed regular Wine and MS Word on my (Fedora 12) computer, and it works like crap. I was curious if the commercial version worked any better. Thanks. [more inside]
Starting in about a month, my wife and I will both be working from home a fair amount. We are both on the phone a lot. We want to pay as little as possible and are trying to figure out how to deal with the phone situation. I currently use Google Voice and make and receive most of my calls on the home phone, which works well for me. I'm not sure how to deal with the apparent need for 2 phones. Both of us have cell-phones, but we're on the phone so much that we'd rather not be on the cell phones all day. We could obviously just get a 2nd Google Voice number for incoming calls, but I'm not sure how to deal with receiving or making calls while the other person is on the home phone. Thoughts? Should we get a Skype or Vonage number? Just get a 2nd landline? Any good free/cheap options that I'm missing? We're in Portland, OR if that matters. Thanks!

I've read all the previous threads about coworker relationships. It's a polarizing issue, and I've generally fallen on the side of opposition of them. Of course, the universe being as it is, I've found myself in a situation where I've fallen pretty badly for a coworker who reciprocates my feelings. We cannot decide if this is worth pursuing. Can you help us? [more inside]

So, I finally have a job with opportunity for advancement, and two positions have opened up. The glitch is that I'm competing for one of these two positions with two other people, both of whom I work closely with. Also, once the decisions have been made, the two who are selected will have to work with the un-selected one until replacements have been found. I need advice on how to navigate this awkward situation with professionalism and grace. [more inside]

So, a few of us suggested to our manager that we, his employees, conduct second-round interviews on domain-specific knowledge the manager probably doesn't know well enough to judge himself. Manager agreed, we did the interviews, some people got hired. Recently, Manager mentioned to us in private that we should appreciate this sort of autonomy because there were places where this would not fly at all. Should I be worried? [more inside]
