Small Office/Outlook Filter: I'm part of a small, family-run non-profit organization and we're attempting to drag ourselves, screaming, into the 21st century. Right now the main email is AOL and has been for years. (I know, I know.) We want to transition to a setup that allows us to have our own emails, yet share calendars and tasks. With our setup, what advice can you give on our setup? (more inside)

I have been watching the AMC series
Mad Men (set in NYC office setting around 1960) and it made me wonder. Just how accurately does it portray the professional workplace of the period? (Ubiquitous smoking, drinking, degrading comments to women and overt flirting, etc.). In particular, was it ever considered normal to keep a stocked bar in every office/conference room?
I realize things are exaggerated for TV and to contrast with today’s norms... but generally speaking was it really this bad back then? I guess I am looking for responses from those who are familiar with the TV show and worked in an office in this timeframe.

WordMacroFilter: So my new boss is great but he has some crazy grammar and wordsmithing quirks. I received a list (no joke) of the edits he wants to see of documents that come to his desk (use affect instead of impact, effect instead of impacts, etc). I'd like to create a Microsoft Word Macro that will automate the task.

I'm applying for post-grad school jobs. One of them, a bit of a long shot, is within my close-knit current office. Others are elsewhere in and outside of the organization. Difficulty: my two best references are not only in this office but running the first job search. How in the world do I manage this?

I'm looking to go paperless, and have been quite impressed by what I've read about the
Neatdesk adf scanner.
I'm looking for something similar to compare it to(so I don't buy the first thing I see), and I recall seeing some "X"-shaped scanner somewhere in some magazine(Wired is ringing a bell, but I really do not recall), but no amount of Google-fu can help me locate it again.
Has anybody seen such a thing?

However, I'm stumped about what would be an appropriate, and appreciated, gift.
