Need an expandable phone that isn't awful

I need a new phone for the home office. Degree of difficulty: Home phone service is VOIP, so the "base unit" must be in a closet in the living room, but I need speakerphone functionality (ideally a constantly-plugged-in unit, not a handset) three rooms away in the office. [more inside]

Gift Ideas for a white elephant office party - under $20

Longtime lurker, first post. Could you help with some ideas for a white elephant gift exchange party with my coworkers. The company is a fairly conservative large corporation. The gift needs to be secular, inoffensive, good humor and under $20. Last year some popular gifts were Snuggie, Dilbert calendar and so on.. Food/wine seems to be ok but not popular. Any trendy gifts for 2010 or techtoys will also help. Thanks much.

Office holiday activities

My office is having a potluck lunch next month to mark the holidays. We need some fun activities to get people in the spirit of the season. Difficulty: most of my dozen co-workers are middle-aged introverted engineer types. We’ll be joining a similar-sized business analyst team that is a little more outgoing. Some of the past years’ games include a photo contest, sweet tooth challenge (guessing contents of candy filled jars), charity raffle, secret santa, and yankee swaps. I like the idea of a photo contest with a funny topic where artistic merit is irrelevant.

Help me be a more efficient transcriber

I've started offering transcription services as part of my business, but at the moment I'm using Windows Media Player next to a Word document, switching to the player to press pause and play each time I want to stop and start. Not ideal. I learnt to audio type using a foot pedal and I'd like to do that again, so, transcribers and secretaries/PAs, please recommend! I'm in the UK and would prefer to buy something available (online is fine) within the UK. If it works with Windows Media Player, fine; if not, please recommend (inexpensive) software I could use. If you need more info, let me know!

How to cope with a noisy workplace?

I work as a web developer in an open space, and unfortunately, I am the type of developers who needs silence in order to concentrate on my code. This is a small startup, where people leave their music, ringtones, and other noisy devices, open. There's noise through the whole day, and I'm having difficulties to be productive. I've informed my managers about this, but since they are quite happy with background music, they've disregarded my requests and needs. How do you cope with such a situation? Are you aware of any good corporate "noise policy"? What do you think I should do?

Why does changing my keyboard layout in Windows change my editing language in Word?

I often write in several languages (French, Dutch, and English) and so I use multiple keyboard layouts (on Windows 7) and multiple editing languages (in Microsoft Office 2007). I find that when I have Word open and I change the keyboard setting in Windows (from US to US-International or vice-versa), Microsoft Word will change the editing language back to English (United States), Word's default language, no matter what other language (Dutch or French) I was working in at the time.
