I need to create a list of tasks that rotate between a number of employees on a monthly basis. I'd like the ability to assign a variable number of tasks to each employee, so one person might receive one task and another two. Previously this had been done manually on an excel sheet; can you think of any way to semi-automate it? [more inside]
I've recently been teamed on a project with a co-worker who dresses and acts professionally, but tends to wear low-cut blouses. The problem is not what she is wearing but that she is frequently, nervously making adjustments to her neckline. So often that it's now making me nervous. Question inside. [more inside]
In my office I have multiple employees working on my files in different roles. I am looking for a way to integrate things so that I can look at one or two programs on my computer and see what is happening on them. [more inside]
So I've decided I make enough to put someone on my personal projects full time and I'd like to go the virtual personal assistant route. And I was wondering what i should know. What should a monthly salary be? Are there certain countries it's trickier with? What duties are best served? Transcription? Research? First drafts? I've tried googling but it seems like it's either four year old esquire articles or certain larger sites that have done enough SEO that everything points back to them. So it's time to ask the experts: the hive mind.
It recently occurred to me that in a temperate climate, my car could be a nice place to work from, offering freedom to select the locale and the view and to change them at will. Has anyone tried this? How did you set it up? What worked and what didn't?
I work in an office that shares an office with a group of guys. The guy who is in charge of that office is sort of a dick, or at least I've always gotten that vibe. There is one bathroom and I am the only woman in the office. I used the bathroom once in the morning. [more inside]
I'm using Excel and Word 2007. Created Excel docs, created Word docs, certain cells in the Excel docs have data that must be embedded in the Word docs. This has been discussed here before, but only the method of creating these links (which was my method) but I'm just checking to see if anybody knows how to make this work when you move the document. All the links appear to be hardcoded absolute links to the Excel doc. Works fine on my PC, breaks on yours. Any way to get this functionality to be portable? [more inside]
My boyfriend and I would like to rent a nearby office space to use as....well, office space. However, neither of us have enough freelance income to justify the cost on the application papers. [more inside]
For some recent while, probably since updating the OS X Mavericks, Microsoft Word for OS X keeps coming to the foreground on its own when I'm doing other things, as long as a document is open in Word. If I click out to the Finder, Word makes itself the frontmost program. If I click into the browser, Word comes forward. [more inside]
I want to be able to open multiple instances of Excel 2010 in Windows 7 on a PC. This is the default for opening Word docs but for some reason Excel limits me to multiple windows inside one instance. Is there a way to do this? Challenge: I do not have the ability to edit the registry on this (work) computer.
I have a list of names on an Excel file. I'd like to transfer each name (along with other details) to one PowerPoint slide. Is there any way I can do this without having to manually type in each name?
My company currently has a computer that has a Japanese version of Windows 7 Professional installed on it. We want to install an English language version of Windows 8.1 on the computer. Will the language for the Microsoft Office software (currently also Japanese) already installed on the computer also change to English when we change to the new English language version of Windows 8.1? I am still using Office 2003 for personal use. It meets my limited needs perfectly well, and I want to avoid learning curves and costs associated with alternatives if at all possible. I understand that Microsoft will no longer be issuing security patches for it soon, so there are potential risks in continuing to use it, but how serious are those risks given my actual pattern of use? And can they be easily mitigated by avoiding various features or behavior? [more inside]
Help! My husband is in deep trouble at work for meeting with me on a recent business trip. Although he had the permission of his superiors to meet me, they are still going to hold an investigative hearing, which could result in his demotion, suspension, or even termination. He has offered to provide documentation proving that our meeting was not a flagrant attempt at violating company policy, but his superiors are not interested in seeing it. In spite of his long tenure, it isn't looking too good. What can we do? [more inside]
Some years ago, I read about a study on workplace productivity, set up to test the effect of a new office layout (or perhaps some other physical feature of work environment). They changed to the new layout, and productivity jumped up. Over the following months, however, productivity tailed off to the original levels. So they changed the layout back to the original one. Again, productivity spiked suddenly and gradually declined back to the baseline. It was concluded that, whatever the relative merits of different office arrangements, the very act of making a change causes a temporary productivity increase. Does anyone know where I can find this study? [more inside]
My church is upgrading its computers and the old copies of Office are long since vanished, evidently. (If they ever existed; I kind of suspect the last person who did IT stuff may have pirated it.) So, we're buying new versions. But our office manager is... well, she's not at all computer literate. She's kind of continuing to be employed more on a charity basis than because she's actually very capable. But I need to get her able to actually use the basic features of Word, Excel, and Publisher on the new versions, in the simplest way possible that does not involve my personally sitting with her for days at a time. Help? [more inside]
Hi, does anyone have recommendations for attractive, well-designed and relatively affordable office furniture? I am looking for something that is a step up from Stapes and Office Depot, especially for conference tables. This is for a true office, not a home office. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It's an alphabet soup that doesn't allow for even a relatively straight line between money and banks. The Treasury ultimately provided the money, the Office of Thrift Supervision was supposed to oversee the money, the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission closed banks that didn't qualify for the bailout. But who wrote the check and was ultimately responsible for those banks until they paid the bailout money back?

How do you cope in a cubicle area where people pass by every 10-15 mins. For example, MOST cubicles in the office are along the wall (4 people per block). People walk in the middle isle and there isn't any disturbance. However, my cubicle is situated in the middle of nowhere. Basically, there is a wall in front & right side. However, the entire back & left side is open and people walk by every 10-15 mins. The problem is that my cubicle is near a door where people walk in/out then walk behind our cubicle and walk toward the kitchen or printer. I have nothing to hide. But, every time people walk by, I tend to look and see who walked by. Or sometimes I feel that there is no privacy at all. I'm not looking for a specific answer but would like to know how you cope in this situation or what did you do?

A second hand one seems sensible and I understand the page count is important, but it's hard to find decent information on the internet about which companies are reliable and which machine produce good copies and have cheaper spares and toner. A3 is important and so is a high quality print. I was looking at a Ricoh Aficio CL7000, but I don't really have any idea! Any help would be fantastic as would suggestions of where I should be buying this thing.

I haven't had many medical problems over the course of my life, but recently I had two (separate) "emergency" hospitalizations for a condition that I had been unaware that I had/have. (Complicated diverticulitis with perforation). Both hospitalizations were truly harrowing and have pretty much turned my life upside down. Very serious! In the hospital (the 2nd time) a surgeon who was on call told me that it really is not a matter of if I need surgery, but when I need surgery. (He says I need a colon resection). [more inside]

Trying to help a friend find a solution. They need a simplistic solution to tracking some office items. They have several demo kits (15) that their team uses. So the long and short of it is, I'm pretty sure that Meiryo UI is messed up or missing or something, and instead Office 2011 on my Mac has decided that it'd be totally cool to use Mart Futomaru Gothic instead for most Japanese text display, including all over Excel. Is there some way to reinstall just the font(s) or maybe clear the Office font cache?
