Writing off a home office used for volunteer work?

I write off my home office every year as a legitimate business expense. This year I did not focus on freelance projects and did a lot of volunteer/pro bono work. What do I need to know about writing it off this year? I'll seek out a CPA, but I'd like to be knowledgeable first. Anybody ever get themselves into a similar situation? [more inside]

Bringing Office on a Mac back from the brink

All the Microsoft Office 2004 apps on my PowerBook (10.4.10) have stopped working. The icons bounce around in the Dock, and a Microsoft Error Reporting application launches, but nothing happens. Needed: the ultimate paper hanging system?

We need to install a hanging system on our conference room wall that will allow us to easily swap paper items of various sizes and thicknesses (posters, printer proofs, regular ol' paper). The space is about 4 feet wide. Does anyone have any experience with this thing? Hangman Products Clip-it Strip Reminds me of the strips that were installed at the top of chalkboards in grade school. It seems like they were never strong enough and teachers struggled to keep things in there. Any other product recommendations?

Sexual harrasment, slashdot, and you

I was reading a slashdot article dealing with sexual harassment a while back, and in the comments there were lots of people talking about how they hate working with women because of the potential for accusations, complete with lots of horror stories about guys who were fired/taken to court/etc for innocuous comments or situations. I have to think that a lot of that was exaggeration for effect, but it makes me wonder: What's the reality like in the US? [more inside]

Help for opening a second office?

Our company is looking to open a second office out of the state. We're an engineering firm with about 50 people providing civil engineering, surveying, GIS, and traffic/transportation services. Several of our employees will be relocating to North Carolina (we're currently in Florida), so we're using this opportunity to expand our business to a new market. We've been discussing doing this for a long time now, but not quite this far away... Does anyone know of any resources to assist in opening a second office or a branch office? We've got so much to think about in so little time (we're trying to do this by years end), I'd really like to find some tips on getting this done smoothly. Thanks!
