Frenemies R Us, Workplace Edition

I'm currently working with, for the first time in my life, someone who I can truly classify as a frenemy. 50% of the time, all smiles and sweetness; 50% of the time, undermining, secretive, backstabby, and manipulative. This is someone I actually *have* to work with-- we're on a number of teams together. Lately she's been telling others that a project I created, developed, and sold to a client was actually "a fluke" and that my contributions were minimal. How to deal with this in the most productive way? [more inside]

Will my husband be fired for this?

Help! My husband is in deep trouble at work for meeting with me on a recent business trip. Although he had the permission of his superiors to meet me, they are still going to hold an investigative hearing, which could result in his demotion, suspension, or even termination. He has offered to provide documentation proving that our meeting was not a flagrant attempt at violating company policy, but his superiors are not interested in seeing it. In spite of his long tenure, it isn't looking too good. What can we do? [more inside]

Is there some sort of etiquette in getting a second medical opinion?

I haven't had many medical problems over the course of my life, but recently I had two (separate) "emergency" hospitalizations for a condition that I had been unaware that I had/have. (Complicated diverticulitis with perforation). Both hospitalizations were truly harrowing and have pretty much turned my life upside down. Very serious! In the hospital (the 2nd time) a surgeon who was on call told me that it really is not a matter of if I need surgery, but when I need surgery. (He says I need a colon resection). [more inside]

How do I best help my mom with her election?

My mother is running for a fairly high office. I generally agree with her beliefs and standings, but not always those of her party. I want to support her in her bid for election but I have a hard time waving a flag for those who I don't agree with. How do I support my mom who I agree with while dealing with those who I have to shake hands with and smile at while at parades, fairs, and other functions (I mean people who are working for her campaign either explicitly or not, not those who are there to heckle)? This is in the US in the midwest, but it really shouldn't matter what state we are in or what party we might each be affiliated with - I just want to know how to best help my mom.

Would I Be an Office Tattletale?

I have a newish job at a law firm. I like it. It's not in my field and I'm a bit overqualified, but I need the money and a sense of accomplishment. I work very hard, am trying to learn quickly, and have had excellent, enthusiastic feedback from my boss. However, a coworker who has some problems with my work style and constantly tells me I'm a sloppy worker wants to have a sit-down meeting with me at Starbucks tomorrow to discuss my work. Nonprofit Finance: Contracted or in-house?

[Nonprofit Filter] We're investigating options to shop out the major financial needs of our nonprofit organization. If we do this, what tasks should be kept in house and (if we no longer have a dedicated finance person) who should do them? We are considering this option, but have a fair number of questions about how other small NGOs manage their financial administration. Is yours in-house, contracted, a combination of both? What are the benefits/challenges? Lots of questions and would appreciate experienced feedback! [more inside]

So, I finally have a job with opportunity for advancement, and two positions have opened up. Bucket o' beans...

So, a few of us suggested to our manager that we, his employees, conduct second-round interviews on domain-specific knowledge the manager probably doesn't know well enough to judge himself.
