Conflicts in a law office

I'm writing a story in which some of the characters are employed at a law firm. I'm looking for realistic conflicts in such an office that would involve senior partners, junior partners, associates, paralegals, and staff. Not life and death struggles like a John Grisham novel, but more day-to-day things.

Best place to purchase a nice desk name plate/sign

I'd like to purchase a friend a nice-looking (probably wood?) desk name plate/sign to celebrate a recent graduation. Probably something along these lines, but open to suggestions. I would want it customized with just her name. (I know this sounds a little random, but knowing her I believe she will get a kick out of it.) [more inside]

How do I handle this awkward work situation? Details inside

I was basically accused of lying at work. Now what do I do? I've been working a temp (with potential to become permanent) job for a little over a month. Prior to this I had been unemployed for over 7 months after a lay off. I worked for my previous company/job for almost 15 years. I am working in a completely different industry and role than I had in my last several jobs. This is a clerical/support position in a conservative company. More... [more inside]

Help me eat a healthy breakfast

Every day I make a cup of instant oatmeal at the office. This is the ideal breakfast setup for me - quick, easy, cheap, low-calorie, fairly non-perishable food that I can store in my desk drawer - except I'm not sure it's all that healthy. Is there a nutrient-rich alternative to this? [more inside]

Is office culture in England really as lewd as portrayed in The Office?

Of course I am referring to the BBC version of the show here. I am currently rewatching the series and a few scenes stuck out to me as kind of bizarrely sexist and lewd, in a way that goes above and beyond the usual bounds of a comedy. If there wasn't some bit of truth to these scenes I can't imagine they would have worked that well as jokes in the first place, so I ask thee who have worked in that culture... [more inside]

what shall i do with the ex i work with in the same office 3 feet away?

my ex and i have been working together for 3 or 4 years, and we dated for 1.5 year. he broke up with me a year ago. the post break up year is full of drama. i couldn't let go. the chemistry we had was awesome, and before we dated we used to be the best friends at work. sex is mind blowing good too. at the spot when we broke up we were pretty seriously. neither of us could actually move on given the fact we still see each other everyday. the reason why neither of us has left the company yet is because both of us got some tremendous opportunity or reward for our hard working in the past years for this company. i can't give it up for this break up. so i stuck to it for a year. Indoor plant for my office

About 12 months ago I started work at a new workplace. The office fit-out is ordinary; beige cubicles for the workers, (mostly) windowless little offices for the big-salary earners. We all work in a low-rise building a few ks out of the CBD. A few nice things about the environment struck me when I was new: the lovely Indo-pacific artefacts decorating the place and the abundance of lovely tropical plants everywhere. [more inside]

Workplace etiquette question

Research showing that *any* office rearrangement improves productivity?

Some years ago, I read about a study on workplace productivity, set up to test the effect of a new office layout (or perhaps some other physical feature of work environment). They changed to the new layout, and productivity jumped up. Over the following months, however, productivity tailed off to the original levels. So they changed the layout back to the original one. Again, productivity spiked suddenly and gradually declined back to the baseline. It was concluded that, whatever the relative merits of different office arrangements, the very act of making a change causes a temporary productivity increase. Does anyone know where I can find this study? [more inside]
