All the Microsoft Office 2004 apps on my PowerBook (10.4.10) have stopped working. The icons bounce around in the Dock, and a Microsoft Error Reporting application launches, but nothing happens. I've attempted to rebuild my Entourage database but it won't respond; I have also tried fixing the permissions but with no luck. Any ideas? [more inside]

I am purchasing a couple of Mac Minis for a little project, and I need legit copies of MS Office 2004 for Mac. I can find plenty of places online selling the "Full, Standard" version of the software, which is what I want, for $125-$175. This is over 50% off list. Are these discounters selling illegitimate copies? Can you suggest a good place to buy this software? I need to purchase it by midnight tonight (we expense software for tax purposes).

Mac OSX Server Backup question: what's the best way to ensure that my small office doesn't lose the data we store on our file server? Right now we use Retrospect with a tape drive, but it's not an ideal solution, because finding stuff on the tape is a huge pain, and the time required to maintain it is lost time. Should we go with a portable external hard drive (someone brings the tapes home just in case of fire or explosion)? Or purchase an off-site solution?

ExcelFilter: I've got a specific problem in mind [inside for the curious/helpful], but more importantly I'm looking for an advanced tutorial for excel. I'm looking to go from someone who is confident with excel to being a full-on pro. Books are ok, but I'd prefer internet (i.e. free) resources. I am using Office v.X for Mac, but I think most techniques will translate pretty well across platforms. I'm looking for things like recursive formulas, modeling theory, little-known tools/techniques, pivot tables, etc. [more inside]
