Its been ten years since I broke up with my daughter's father for the first time (of many), and I still go through periods of extreme doubt and regret. I'm not talking about having fleeting moments of uncertainty; I will literally ruminate for days about our relationship and what went wrong and wonder if we should/could fix it. [more inside]
Ok, I just got laid off with three months salary in lieu of notice. I'm NOT looking for advice on job hunting. What I am looking for is how to spend this awesome free time wisely! I'm planning to increase my gym classes to 5 times a week, planning lunches with friends, going to sample sales and writing the book I always wanted to write. What other cool activities can I do that I can't normally do with a 9-5 job, or would be too expensive or inconvenient? [more inside]

Four months ago I was laid off from a company where I had worked for almost 15 years. I received a severance equivalent to 30 weeks of pay. About half of that was paid to me in bi-weekly paychecks while I could still technically be called an employee of the company. The other half will be paid in a heavily taxed lump sum check in the next week or so. more inside... [more inside]

Hey everyone, I read some other threads in regards to 401k but it seems like the audience is divided. My recent company (industry giant who laid off 8000 employees and gave our jobs to folks in India) has laid me off and I need to cash out my 401k. I am wondering who has experience with this as of the past year or two? I live in Mass so Fidelity says I will have to take out 20% out of my total sum for taxes but they didn't say anything about a penalty. My amount is less than $11,000 and I want to use some of it to start my own agency. Has anyone cashed out their 401k and if so, was there a penalty? PS. Please spare me the 'noo dont cash out, its a bad idea' -- I'm knee deep in $115k for student loans and my life could not get worse and more complicated so I'm confident cashing this crap out is my only way out to some sanity and inner peace. Thanks!

Good Evening! I'm looking for a release liner (similar to the peel off liners that go on the back of band-aids or gift bows) that would stick to the adhesive side of a piece of 2" x 2" surgical tape. We live in the D.C area and have had ice dams on our roof and its starting to cause leaking problems. Nothing drastic, but some water is starting to drip inside of our windows. I put some Deicer in socks and threw them on the gutters to try to clear a path for the water to go, but that seems to be taking forever. Our neighbors have some guys shoveling snow off their roofs and they said they would do the same for us for $500. Is that too much to pay? Our house isn't that large, its a split-level home.
