How did Kubrick do it? There's a scene in "2001 A Space Odyssey" that has always fascinated and puzzled me. It's the scene on a spaceship in which a character is walking down a circular corridor, moving away from the camera. At the end of the corridor is a rotating ring. When the character reaches the ring she starts walking around it, up the wall. Obviously the camera is linked to that far rotating ring, but the transition between the near corridor and the far ring is absolutely seamless. [more inside]

How did Kubrick film the psychedelic 'stargate' sequence of "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Some of the movie's special effects are obviously crude CGI (like the cockpit displays during spacecraft rendezvous) but the ending seems far more sophisticated. Regular old animation? Looks too... digital. Articles on 'the making of' I've seen never discuss this all-important visual (although it's cool knowing about the spinning set used for example in the jogging scene).

In Arthur C. Clarke's novel, "3001: The Final Odyssey", he postulates the idea of a "ring around the world", an artificial ring surrounding the entire globe, sitting in geostationary orbit, connected to the Earth with four space elevator towers at 90 degree intervals.
Has anyone ever rendered or painted what this would look like from space, or on Earth?
