How and why do we become accustomed to smells? What makes some odours personally super-pungent one day and unnoticed 'background noise' later on, despite the smell remaining objectively unchanged? [more inside]

I have many pairs of Birkenstocks, about 25 or so, and I can no longer wear some of my favourites due to their funky odour. I've tried using the Birkenstock brand footbed cleaner, and other mild detergents, but haven't had great success getting the funk out. Looking for suggestions for how to clean old smelly pairs, and also how to prevent the funk from settling into new pairs. Natural solutions preferred, please.
Stinky balls. No, not that sort. I purchased a wine decanter that comes with a stand for drying. Unfortunately, the stand has a rubber ball on the end (to prevent scratching, I'd assume), and has a very, very pungent rubber odour. Is there some way of getting rid of that smell?
Something in my rubbish bin stinks, and since I was away for rubbish collection day it's going to be there for a while longer. What can I do to get rid of, or at least reduce, the smell? [more inside]

How can I get rid of the odour that my sandals leave on my feet? They have a vinyl lining which creates an awful smell when contacted by sweat. This isn't a problem with any other footwear, and I've had a number of other people complain about this happening to them, so "wash your feet" would not be an appreciated response.
