Someone I know keeps complaining about how my room has a 'gross smell' even though I wash regularly, don't let food rot away in my room, empty the garbage from my room quite regularly, vacuum at least once every 1.5 weeks and, to my knowledge, don't do anything that would be the cause of things smelling like shit. Regardless, I'd like to take steps to keep my room smelling fresh. [more inside]

I tried some free-sample of underarm deodorant and it had a freakishly strong scent that I just can't get out of two pieces of wool clothing I wore during the trial. I've tried Eucalan soak, regular wash with a natural, gentle detergent and I can still smell the stuff. I've read that dry-cleaning wool doesn't necessarily remove odors--any other suggestions would be appreciated.

My clothes cupboard is a bit overstuffed – that's not going to change. I find that anything that's not been washed in a month or so develops a cupboard smell – not mouldy thank goodness, but a smell I can only describe as "dusty". This is especially bad with T-shirts that are folded and stacked in a pile, less so (but still a bit) on shirts and trousers that hang from hangers. [more inside]

We woke up to a strong burnt sugar or maple syrup smell permeating the house but not the garage, attic, basement, or outdoors. Tell us what to do.
A few years ago, I had an attic fan installed to reduce heat build-up on the second floor of my home. Ever since, I have noticed foul sewage odors in my first-floor half bath. The odor is only present when the attic fan is running. What is causing the foul smell, and what can I do to solve this problem? [more inside]
Asking for a friend: Two times in the past six months, my oven/stove and a spot near my refrigerator (several feet away) have smelled *very strongly* of some petrochemical, like benzene or kerosene or gasoline or something sweet and fuelly like that (i.e., not natural gas, not propane). There is a similar, faint, lingering odor in the oven. What could be causing this? Some kind of propellant in the gas lines? Illicit neighbor activity? If it helps, I'm on the 4th floor of a 6-floor building in NYC.
My suit now smells of something petroleum-based, which I assume is the dry cleaning chemicals. After four days of hanging in a well ventilated room the smell is fainter but still there, so I plan to take it somewhere else to clean it again. I'm just really curious about this as it's never happened to me before. My question for the right honorable Green is what could the cleaners possibly have done wrong to cause this? I thought dry cleaning was pretty much completely automated and foolproof now and there wouldn't be much chance of something so basic going wrong.
I foolishly put a banana in a backpack (JanSport knapsack). The banana was crushed and smeared all over the inside of the large section of the backpack and set for a day. Now I cannot get rid of the rank banana odor. I've washed three times, and sponged heavily with vinegar twice. The material is some sort of synthetic, no leather. Suggestions on how to remove the lingering odor?

My Mr. Bento lunchbox has a persistent odor, not unlike things you've (I've) forgotten in the back of the fridge. It's starting to permeate the little containers and into my food which is... counter-productive to me using it. How do I mitigate the funk? Difficulty: it can't be submerged or put in the dishwasher. Because of Reasons, Mr. Blues and I rented an apartment sight-unseen. We moved in last week. It is generally quite nice, but the balcony/deck absolutely reeks of urine. Evidently a previous tenant seriously neglected her dogs (and potentially cats? it smells like cat pee to me) and they used the balcony as a bathroom. It absolutely reeks. How can we and or the management company fix this? [more inside]

This is a question about NYC real estate, specifically about a building maintenance issue. After many years of renting, I am in the market for a co-op apartment in the five boroughs of NYC. There is a problem with my current building that I am willing to tolerate as a tenant that would be a complete deal-breaker as an owner The issue is this: [more inside]

I feel sick every time I get on to nyc subway trains. The N train is constantly stinky like urine and mcdonalds and feet, that triggered my multiple chemical sensitivity badly. I noticed 7 train usually have very fresh air which does not trigger my symptoms, as well as #6 train. R train is much better than N train, and E train is much better than F train. I want to know what caused these nasty stinky trains? Are all odor caused by mold? Btw: I can't tolerate PATH smell as well. I'm so confused people in these trains seem do not feel anything. Any information or comment are welcome.

Living in an apartment building and the hallways are smelling like marijuana. Like strong enough to choke on it. This is not the first time. [more inside]
I did something colossally stupid this evening: Put up some pasta on the stove and then fell promptly asleep for a little while on the couch. Woke up to a terrible smell of natural gas. Found the water in the pot had spilled over and doused the flame of the burner it was cooking on. With the gas on high. It was probably like that for about 10 minutes or so. And now, four hours later, the house still has a strong-ish odor. Here is my question: does the smell indicate that gas is still present in the house, and if so, should I be concerned for the health and safety of my small children, who are sleeping a hallway away from the kitchen? So we're opening up a concession stand a local soccer field tomorrow, and we're going to have a grill at which we're going to serve typical grill stuff (burgers, dogs, maybe a few fancier things here and there). What can we throw on the grill (like in a saucepan on a side burner) that can blanket the fields with the smell of home-cooked burgers and generate some serious mouth-watering? The grill's fairly small -- a fairly typical four-burner suburban soccer dad fixture, and the stand will be open for about 2-2.5 hours each night. [more inside]
This morning, my wife discovered a forgotten bag of potatoes that have apparently been our pantry since the Taft administration. The bag burst, leaving rotten potato mush and juice on our old hardwood floors. It smells like death has vomited more death on top of death. Help. [more inside]
We just bought a new house, yay! It's in suburban NC, less than 3 years old. Starting today, my husband and I noticed a strong musty smell in the front entryway. There is a guest bathroom and a home office just beyond this foyer, but those rooms smell fine to me. The floors are hardwood, no rugs down yet. There is an air vent directly overhead as you enter the house. Could that vent (pushing out a/c for the first time since move-in, now that weather is warm) be the source of the funky smell? If yes, why?? And how do we get rid of it?

I recently went out on a date with a woman I'm interested in. (I'm an early-30s male.) It's very early in the proceedings, so we're still getting used to each other. Anyway, during this date, she informed me that sexually-aroused men have a particular odor in their breath, and that I'd had it all evening. Later on, she told me that she actually didn't care for the odor at all, which was news to me. This is the first I've heard of this phenomenon, so I'd like to learn more about it. [more inside]
