I live in the United States, am 4 years out of college, and work in the software industry. I want to explore opportunities to work abroad in my field (e.g. software/web development), preferably in Europe, or South or East Asia. I currently work for one of the largest software companies in the world, so I am going to explore internal options, but I'm also willing to my employer if the opportunity is right. Does anyone have any advice on where to start my search, or any personal experiences or anecdotes?

Are you a female in a profession where females are rare enough that people ask you what it's "like" to be a female whatever-you-are (or just meet you with surprise because of your sex)? If so, what responses do you give to those people, and do they depend on context (stranger at a party, interviewer, etc.)?

What does the Polish word "Haftarz" mean? I see it listed as the occupation of one of my ancestors in the 1854 Warsaw Police census, but I can't find a translation.

What are some sources for audio recordings of everyday Iraqis speaking -- telling their stories, talking about their experience of the war and occupation, or talking about their feelings on any subject? I know about the excellent War News Radio site; I'm looking for more sites like that. I'm equally happy to find voices speaking in English or in Arabic. [more inside]
