100 meters in 10 feet or less?

DIY antenna for a crystal radio kit. Can I do this with less than 100 feet of wire? This is for the oatmeal crystal radio box kits. We're doing a workshop with kids in a few weeks, and I'm not sure if we're going to have access to a roof antenna.

What other options do I have for being able to wire these up and get them to work? Loop antennas? Can I just throw a wire out the window? It's been about ten years since I've thought seriously about dipoles / yagis, and I'm a little lost.

I've looked here and here, and read this previous question (I'm also planning to take a look at the ARRl handbook). Any suggestions for how to set this up?

Thanks!

Please help me store my oats.

Please help me find the perfect oatmeal container. My mother-in-law has an oatmeal container I covet, and I'm trying to find one for myself. I want it to:

- be clear
- be sturdy
- have a secure lid that's easy to open
- be around 4 quarts (bigger is okay)
- have a nook on the outside for holding a scoop, and the scoop should be 1/4 cup or larger
- be available in the USA, preferably on-line, or else in a store in the Seattle area

I don't want to put the scoop inside the container, I want it to be attached to the outside. Yeah, I know, I'm being very picky, but I cook a lot of oatmeal. The container my MIL has is about 30 years old and has no useful information. I like these, but they don't have the scoop receptacle. We go through oats quickly and don't need to worry about them getting rancid.

Oh, the oatmeal and the Crockpot will be friends.....

I have a 5-qt slow cooker and would like to make as much Steel-Cut Oatmeal as I can in it for a breakfast for a crowd. What are the correct ratios and amounts of water and oats? Also interesting mix-in ideas are welcome. I'm providing breakfast for about 30 adults and one of the dishes we're doing is Steel-Cut Oats with a variety of topping available. In the interest of efficiency, I'm thinking it makes sense to put the oats in my 5-qt crockpot the night before so they'll be ready in the morning but I have no clue as to correct water/oats ratios. I make oats on the stove all the time and usually do 1/4 cup oats to 1 cup water for single serving but does that scale up in the exact same proportions? Are there different ratios for slow cookers due to the longer cooking time? And how many servings do you think I can get in one batch?

Also, I usually just make the oats plain, maybe with a little cinnamon and vanilla but any ideas for interesting ingredients to cook with the oats or to have available as a topping would be helpful.

Help my overcome my oatmeal addiction

A little background: 5'2" female, quite fit/sporty. Over the past year I've been working towards eating better, more ethically and cleaning up my diet...The recent exception to this is oatmeal (rolled oats). Lovely, lovely oatmeal. As a result I've stopped eating foods with added sugar and no longer crave them at all, which is awesome. The bulk of my diet is comprised of salads, various vegetables, hummus, fish (no other meat), fruit, potatoes, low-fat yogurt and milk, some legumes and nuts. I rarely eat grains because bread and pasta make me feel bloated and cous cous or quinoa don't really do it for me. I might eat some rice at a restaurant now and again but I don't keep or eat grains at home.

The recent exception to this is oatmeal (rolled oats). Lovely, lovely oatmeal. I normally have it plain, made with water and a little splash of skim milk. Sometimes I add a banana or raisins but this makes it too sweet and I mostly just prefer it plain. I'm on about 2 cups (dry measure) a day now, morning and evening, which is a lot of oatmeal and I could easily eat more. When I get hungry all I want is oatmeal. I only limit myself for fear of bathroom explosions. The problem is, I'm trying to reduce my body fat % and consuming all these oats is really hindering my progress.

Has anyone else experienced this or am I a freak? I don't drink or smoke, so oatmeal is now my only vice!

Oatmeal me!

Where can I buy a nice cup of oatmeal near Washington Square Park on weekday mornings? For the past two years, I have been working in an office that is right by a Europa Cafe. Every morning, I get a small cup of oatmeal there. They make it nice and thick (but not too thick) and they make it with whole milk. I love my morning oatmeal, and I want to continue to eat it for breakfast every day. However, this fall, my life will be based around Washington Square Park, and there are no Europa Cafes in walking distance of the park.

(Yes, I have made my own oatmeal before. No, I don't want to make my own oatmeal every morning. Not having to make my own is worth so much more to me than the $2.66 it costs to buy oatmeal someone else has made (and not ruined).)

Metafilter, thanks in advance, and I will report back in the fall if one of them works out.

Pimp my oatmeal!

I eat oatmeal for breakfast pretty much every day. Help me build a bowl that is as jam-packed with nutrition as possible, while still tasty. I've never been much of a breakfast person, so whatever I eat in the morning has to be worth it in terms of nutrition and flavor, or I'll skip it and just drink extra coffee. Recently, I've figured out a process that works for me: I make a big batch of steel-cut oats in my slow cooker once a week or so, and store in serving-sized plasticware in my fridge. It's just oats, water, and salt. In the morning, I dump a serving into a bowl and add a fistful of frozen fruit from the various bags in the freezer - blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches, or cherries - and microwave. After it's hot and the fruit is thawed, I add some raw walnuts or pecans, cinnamon, a spoonful of ground flaxseed, a spoonful of Benefiber (powdered guar gum supplement), and either unsweetened almond milk or regular cow milk. It's very "one from Column A, one from Column B" and it is delicious.

What else could I add that would boost the nutrition even more? I am interested in both sweet and savory approaches, vegetarian or not, that will fuel my day. (Bacon's nutritious, right?) Ideas involving other grains (rice, wheatberries, groats, but probably not kasha first thing in the morning) are also excellent.

Oat-ternatives?

I do a lot of hiking and camping, but I HATE HATE HATE oatmeal. What are some alternatives that hit the sweet spot of price/convenience/nutrition/pack weight? Because seriously, I'd rather eat cold barf than another bowl of the stuff. Can't abide it.

What should I put in my hot water?

My watercooler at work has a hot water feature which I would like to take advantage of. What are the best healthy substantial "meals" that require me only to add hot water?

(Relevant info: At a cafe I used to frequent, there were packets of Bear Naked blueberry oatmeal that were outstanding. Now, Bear Naked's site doesn't list this as one of their products. Does this product still exist? I don't like Quaker Oats.)

Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches

Why are there more Peaches and Cream flavored instant oatmeal packs in Quaker's Fruit and Cream variety packs than any other flavor? With some regularity, my son & I eat instant oatmeal with the fruit and cream kind being our favorite. I've noticed that every variety pack with includes peach, strawberry, blueberry, and banana always has something like twice as many peach as any of the other flavors. This is true not only with Quaker's variety pack but also Walmart and Kroger brands.

What gives? I'm assuming peach is cheaper to produce or something but can't imagine what would make peach cheaper/easier.
