In Midtown Manhattan, can you recommend a nearby and decent: 1) Indian restaurant; 2) Jewish or Italian deli; and 3) a place to get a good egg cream? [more inside]

Good pond skating in the New York City region? I'm willing to travel up to 100 miles (though that's the absolute limit). The more secluded the better, and no man-made rinks.

After asking this
, and this
, I am headed to NYC to pop the question
under the guise of a shopping trip. She doesn't have a clue! She suggested the trip, and I thought it would be a perfect time and place to do it. I know what I am going to do and say, I just don't know where
to do it. Where should I pop the question in New York City in the wintertime. Because I don't
want to tip her off, and because the weather being what it is, I need spontaneous options that are both inside and outside venues. It can be amongst the public, but I wouldn't want it to be a spectacle. Examples would be the skating rink at Central Park or glancing at a piece of art at the Met. I do not want to do it over dinner. I am looking for spectacular indoor and outdoor venues that will not require reservations, long lines, or the possibility of going pear-shaped. Help me compliment my proposal with a spectacular backdrop in NYC.

Have you done a short-term sublet (or housing swap)? If you were the renter: how did you evaluate applicants, and how did you help your subletter feel at home? If you were the subletter: what worked, and what do you wish the renter had done for you or told you? I'll be subletting my apartment in NYC but I'd love to hear from people in all areas & situations.

I was in a Steve and Barry's store today, and saw pretty cool music video, and now I can't remember who is artist is. It was a dark-haired female vocalist, whose first name I believe was Kaern or Kaeren or Karyn. In the video, she was in a snowy park in what appeared to be NYC. Any ideas?

In NYC, where can I buy FRESH SHELLED peas? (Not the sprouted peas from Sproutman.) On the A or 2/3 would be great, but I'd love to hear about any possibilities anywhere in the five boroughs.

A friend wants to rent a small PA system, a pair of CDJs, and a mixer, for a party in NYC tomorrow night (Friday 1/19). I will be DJing, so I have an interest in making sure that the gear is good. The party is for an organization affiliated with NYU, and he can get some kind of gear from the university, but he's afraid it won't be very good. What are some good alternatives in the city?

One of my wife's distant friends has attempted to invite herself to stay with us, again. She did this last March, and we used the excuse of me starting a new job and needing to do x, y, and z as well as the "out of town" excuse for any remaining dates. This got us off scot-free, but we both knew the time would come again... and it's here. We need a final solution.

What's this public art/sculpture
in NYC? It is plastic and shiny and is located just outside Central Park, across the street from the Apple store on 5th (or it least it was on Dec 31st when I took the picture).

In 1990 (as a non-USAnian) I visited Manhattan. At that time, SOHO was the new "up-and-coming" area: money moving in, interesting shops, galleries, bars, restaurants. What's the hot-spot now? And what's SOHO like now?

I'll be in New York, staying in a subletted West Village apartment, from Dec. 27 to Jan 6. Although I have plenty of friends who I can hang out at night, most will be working during the day.
I'm looking for either some possibilities to keep busy during the day... these include finding other travelers to go to some more obscure sights, short term volunteering, info about watching taped shows, etc. If anyone has suggestions, or places I can look for activities, events, people, that'd be great. I just don't want to waste my time there. Thanks!

The NYC Chiliheads Meetup Group (http://hotnspicy.meetup.com/42/) wants to consider possible venues for its future gatherings. We're a group of individuals, drawn from a variety of backgrounds and industries, that simply LOVES fiery, spicy food. Recent outings have taken us to Cho Dang Gol and Brick Lane Curry House. Like-minded AskMeFites are welcome to join us!

Here I am, going back for the first time in years. What's happening between 12/9 and 12/13? Anybody playing? Where are the new record stores? Is see/hear still open?

My roommates and I have put a deposit down on an apartment in Brooklyn. We're supposed to sign the lease (and fork over the rest of the cash) on Thursday. Idly googling our new address, I discovered that our two-family building contains an SRO (single-room occupancy) dwelling for three people who have been homeless, drug-dependent, incarcerated, institutionalized, or mentally disabled on the second floor. Was the broker or landlord required to tell us this? [more inside]
