NYCTrafficFilter: Help me avoid the worst of it. I have to drive from Maine to Long Branch, NJ for a wedding this weekend. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have to leave Portland at around 1 p.m. on Thursday. This means I'll be nearing NYC right around rush hour. Google Maps suggests going 84 to 91 to 95, over the GWB, to Garden State Parkway to Rt. 36. Should I trust Google on this one?

NYC August 2003 blackout on the web and are offering to purchase the rights for using them in this report. I can provide high-resolution photos to them, but have no idea how to estimate how much to charge them per photo. As an amateur photographer, how do you assign values to your photos for re-use?

In the East River (in New York City), just south of the Queensboro bridge, there's
this black pipe-like thing floating in the water. It doesn't appear to be a solid piece, and it looked like it wasn't even water-tight. There are
platforms with some weird-looking uprights on them every 20 feet or so. As far as I could tell, it didn't look like it was going to or from anything at all. What is it?

A friend and I are producing and directing a biweekly variety-type theater show. We've run our own weekly show much like this with our own creative crew for a number of months, so the production angle is quite familiar, but we need fresh writing blood from outside our social circle. We'd like to open our submissions to playwrights, sketch writers, monologists, and the like, but it's an awfully big city. What are the best ways to find such people willing to submit writing, especially in NYC?
