Hi everyone, I have been tasked with finding a suitable location for brunch on Smith St. in Brooklyn for a sizeable group of people...let's say 10-12. Would love recommendations that are reasonably priced and tasty!
Thanks to any Brooklynites who are able to help.

I'm traveling to NYC on business next week, what part of town should I get a hotel in? I normally use Priceline and stay wherever in Manhattan, but I'm wondering if I should avoid parts of the city due to Hurricane impact/cleanup.

I want to donate more in support of Hurricane Sandy, but I'm concerned that while the Red Cross and the NYC Mayor's Fund are probably getting a ton of love, there are other charities in the city that are in dire straights as a result of the hurricane. (Or just in general.) What smaller, local NYC charities need our support the most?

Towards the end of September, I realized that the property management company did not cash my rent check. I called the company and asked if they had received it, to which they said they had not. I feared it lost in the mail, so I called my bank to ask how much it would cost to cancel a check, which is $15. Trying to save myself some money, I went down to the office to talk to the property management company in person. The surly man at the front desk informed me that my rent was overdue, that I should cancel the lost check and write a new one. I explained to him I didn't want to have to pay for it, and could he take a new check to cover my rent and not cash the old one if it arrived? I had brought with me a letter I had written which very clearly stated the problem with my rent not being paid on time and the costs associated with cancelling a check. I detailed which check # was lost in the mail, which was the new check # and to please DO NOT CASH the lost check if it showed up. He said he would give it to the rent manager. Fast forward to a week later when
both checks have been cashed. It was so much money that my account went negative and now I've been charged a bunch of fees by my credit union! Should I fight my landlord to get them to pay for these fees?

It's currently illegal for promoters to put on an MMA (i.e. 'mixed martial arts,' or 'ultimate fighting') bout in NYC. I'm sure these matches go on nonetheless, even if it's just skilled fighters fighting before spectators, gratis. Anyone know where/how I can see a fight? Or what types of places host fights (I imagine boxing gyms?) in other cities?

Where can I find event listings for the greater Queens area? Before I moved to Queens, I would check out places like Time Out NY, the skint, and Nonsense NYC to find interesting things to do on the weekends. But now I'm realizing just how Manhattan- and Brooklyn-centric the listings are. Does anyone know of any good sources for more local events? (We have a car, so Long Island resources are welcome too.) Or do I just suck it up and ride the F train 25 stops to go where the good stuff is happening?

The last of my high school shirts are starting to go. What would be a good thrift store in Manhattan or Brooklyn where I could get well-sewn men's cotton shirts with a plain, subdued appearance? I am not a "fashion-forward" sort of person; think Goodwill, not Buffalo Exchange. I like deep solids or very subtle patterns, perhaps accomplished in the weave of the fabric rather than by dying. Removable collar stays would be great; they make laundry so much easier.

A friend and I are heading into NYC next weekend. We are coming from Montreal and driving across the border. However, after that, we haven't decided the best way to get into the city. Should we drive to Albany and take a bus from there? (Is there long term parking in Albany?) Should we drive into a suburb and take a train in? Should we drive into the city and find a lot? (I'd probably prefer to do one of the first two unless there is some reason to do the third.)

Where can I buy a repairable shoe in New York City? I just discovered that the reason shoes are so cheap in America is, they're apparently constructed in some way that makes them impossible to fix. I'm willing to pay extra up front if it means that I can just get new soles sewn on instead of going shoe shopping every year. In terms of style, all I want are plain black leather oxfords or derbies, no pinking or toe caps or anything else that would make it harder to polish. In terms of budget, I'm currently paying $50 a pair every six to twelve months, and I'd like not to exceed that by too much (so, e.g., I'd be happy to pay $200 for shoes that reliably last two to four years).
Bonus if anyone can explain why my cheap shoes are impossible to repair. If two piece of leather can be sewn together once, why not twice? It's not like thread holes wear out...
