Recently there is this family brings their super noisy kids(about 5-6) to run and scream on the street infront of my apartment everyday from 6pm-10pm. The street is in a quite neighborhood, there are families, but I never hear or saw a single kids making such noise outside of there home on the street. One day I went down and talked to the parent and kids, that they shouldn't make noise like this, but they didn't listen and was quite rude, both the parent and the unruling kids. I really can't take this, it's extremly noisy, the screaming can't be stopped by closing my windows and putting on earplugs, not to mention it's hot summer that I need a little bit of breeze and peace in the evening at home. What Can I do? this is in NYC, is there any code for noisy street kids? thanks!
I haven't been to a doctor in a few years, and I don't have insurance now and won't have it for 8 months or longer. I was wondering how much would it cost to go to a doctor with no insurance and what choices do I have in the NYC area? [more inside]
So, I'm moving to New York, and the housing situation looks really complicated. I have a friend I can crash with for a week or two, but I would ideally like to find a place soon after I arrive in the city in early August. I have no idea which areas I should be looking in, or what's reasonable for my budget. [more inside]

I recently gave notice at my job, after having received Metrocards in advance. The HR department says because of the Metrocards, I still have to keep working until my resignation date, but won't get a final paycheck and will owe them money afterwards. Is this either legal or normal? What should I do? Details inside. [more inside]
Lots of home movies, some are super-8, some are tapes, some are mini-DV tapes, etc. I'd like to get them put on DVDs that I can then easily edit. I'm in Manhattan, NYC. thanks (oh a long time ago there was another question like this and somebody suggested a mail-order place, but I don't feel comfortable sending off my precious home movies from the 1950s etc. away)

The door to the roof of my new NYC apartment beckons to me with dreams of sunset glasses of wine and weekend lunch picnics, but am I inviting trouble? Does "unofficial rooftop access" exist? I know people in the city hang out on their roofs all the time, but exactly how kosher is this? And what is the limit? Do landlords on average just turn a blind eye? Details inside. [more inside]
Usually I get together with someone and we go to the nyc piers to watch the fireworks, but since this year the 4th lands on a Friday we can't do that as my friend celebrates the sabbath. I figured I could just go the Meetup.com route, but looking at the site today there doesn't seem to be much going on that isn't already full. (I guess I shouldn't have left it to the last minute) If anyone happens to have any suggestions as to what I could do tomorrow I'm all ears.
I'm helping my friend's Maid of Honor plan the bachelorette party. Due to a miscommunication, I thought we would be a party of 6 for dinner. Nope. It's between 12 - 15 people. I need to rethink. [more inside]
I need a new doctor in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Can you recommend one? [more inside]
So, my boyfriend of six months and I are heading to NYC tonight and staying 'til Sunday. I have a up against a wall with an approaching work deadline and because of my own poor planning will need to do a little bit of chipping-away-at-it while we're there. I need to carve out three or four 3/4-hour (ish) focused working sessions during our trip, and I wanted to ask the hive mind if anyone familiar with the city could suggest any non-awful ways to handle this. Light flurries inside... [more inside]
I'd like to compile a list of businesses in New York City—starting with Manhattan—that have been around for 100 years or more. I'd also like to include places the public can visit that aren't "businesses" per se. I'm guessing this information is publicly available, but I don't know where to start. Any guidance would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
A couple of middle-manager-ish employees perhaps bent the rules a little bit for us and allowed us to transfer a lease to new parties, completely getting us out of the lease. Should I/how do I say thank you? [more inside]
[NYC Filter] I want to take my girlfriend out to a nice dinner. No special occasion being celebrated. I'm thinking New American style. For vibe, think Northern Spy, which she and I loved. She's a vegetarian (I'm not) so I want the place to be veg-friendly. Most places only have a token veggie appetizer and veggie entree. I'd love to find a place that offers her more choices. Bonus points if they take reservations. Any thoughts guys?
Pottering around NYC: I work near 34th St/Herald Square and have huge gaps in my work schedule. Help me find nearby places (walking distance or only a couple subway stops at the most) where I can escape the office? Slightly narrowing constraints inside: [more inside]
There are old questions about this topic but I am looking for updated information and suggestions about strip clubs in Manhattan or Brooklyn. [more inside]
My NYC apartment management company is charging tenants for repairs to the roof and outside of the building (the facade). These are not improvements to the units, but to the building. The repairs were finished earlier this year. My apartment is rent stabilized. As I understand it, my next rent invoice will show an extra payment due for these repairs -- although I do not know what the fee will be yet. Before I call 311 and complain, is it legal to charge tenants for building improvements? Thanks in advance!
I am moving to NYC for work (yay!) and need to find an apartment. My start date in my new position is between 8/15 and 9/1, depending on when I can get into a place. Because I'm moving from a low-income area to a high-income one, my salary is basically doubling, which is fantastic, but not until 8/1. I'm trying to figure out a way to get around paying broker fees because my cash flow is not going to be great until the raise kicks in. [more inside]
I have a dog, and the vet I take him to is okay. She's nice, I'm sure she's competent, but she's not the best communicator, and for some reason I don't have absolute confidence in her. My dog has a heart issue, and I'm going to want a really good vet as he gets older. Any recommendations? I'm in Park Slope, but would go elsewhere for someone great.
Can anyone suggest a relatively quiet place to study(must have power socket and wifi) without loud music and not too cold? In NYC, Brooklyn or Manhattan. Preferrably can stay for long hours. NYU library is too cold due to AC temp too low. I already wear long pant and fleece jacket, just cant sit still without chills. Thanks.
Hello, everyone, I'm looking for non-American films that were filmed in NYC. I don't mean films that just take place in NYc but are filmed elsewhere (a la The ninth Gate) but films that were actually filmed in the city. They don't have to be in English, in fact it might be preferable if they weren't.
Is there a scam I'm not aware of, or any reason why I shouldn't tell this person my birthday? I can't think of why I shouldn't, but it just seems a little strange. I would ask them why they want the info, but don't want to come across as strange, in case this is a normal thing. [more inside]
My grandmother is 89, and only retired in the last year. Since she's retired, she hasn't been doing much, and I'm worried about how she'll do over the next few years if she doesn't stay busy. I'd like to make a list of things she could be doing in NYC, where she lives, to stay active. She has some very specific needs and interests, though, and can be a bit ornery, so I'm hoping you can help me work within her limitations. [more inside]
We're thinking seriously about buying a place in Manhattan (and possibly Brooklyn). We have a fairly unique split search (one strand of which is focused on looking for a place that will lower our costs, and the other strand of which is focused on finding a place that might increase our costs a little bit). We need recommendations for honest, intelligent, and very capable real estate agents to help. [more inside]

Ahoy! I've taken (and enjoyed) Manhattan Sailing Club's basic intro to sailing course and been on the water several times in other places. Seeking an NYC bar for a gathering of around eight people in their mid-to-late 30s. Requirements: quiet enough to talk; spacious enough that we can all congregate in one spot or will take reservations; in downtown Manhattan (roughly speaking); reasonably accessible by subway a big plus. Difficulty: event planned for a Saturday night, around 8 PM, and I don't expect everyone to show up at the same time (which makes reservations tricky). Thanks!
My cousin's boyfriend has accepted a postdoc at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. He'll be moving here in August. He is a research scientist and will be keeping very odd hours and making frequent trips to campus to access the lab. Where should he live? Details under the fold. [more inside]
I'm going to NYC for a few days. My plan was to sit in the park and read and then see plays. I am going with someone who wants to Do Things. Assuming I am free during the days only (and tomorrow night before the late Welcome to Night Vale show), what things that aren't the Big Name Attractions should I go for?
I thought I saw a recent announcement for a panel including Israeli author Amos Oz in New York City (perhaps as panel moderator). Now I can't remember where I saw it and Google hasn't been any help. Anyone know of a recent appearance in NYC or an upcoming one?
I have been looking for a while for a particular kind of map of New york City for my office wall. Ideally it would show the neighborhood boundaries like this AND the subway lines like this. For various reasons I am not looking for an interactive or computer-based tool. I need a hard copy map (though I would be happy to print my own if there was a digital version I could license). Plenty of subway maps, and a few neighborhood maps, but I haven't been able to find them both on one map.
My sister is frightening the people who love her by expressing suicidal urges. She isn't sleeping or eating, and even coworkers are worried. [more inside]
Will be traveling to NY this summer for work for a week. Need to spend days on upper east side (5th and 104th). Nights I am free. Like to be able to walk to restaurants, windows browsing, perhaps some jazz. Any advice on what neighborhoods to look for hotels? I realize with the transit options perhaps this question doesn't make much sense, but I would rather not spend a lot of time or money in transit. And if you wouldn't mind suggesting some favorite gems of neighborhood restaurants, places that might be worth the trouble to get to?
Some friends are coming to visit NYC and I'd like to get their kids some fiction set in the city. [more inside]
Things to do alone in NYC...but on a Fri/Sat night. Asking too much? Last month my hang-out buddy of 3 years left to move back to the midwest. I was happy for her since she was exited to go there and "actually be able to afford to buy a place"., but I've been sitting home alone every weekend since she left. I realize that NYC is very solo friendly and I lean towards being an introvert by nature so on weeknights I have no problem going to the movies, the theater, restaurants, bars (although at the bar there always seems to be a guy who could be my father or grandfather trying to hit on me. I still haven't gotten used to the bar scene.) But I'm not confident doing these things alone on the weekends. [more inside]

My bedroom window is 5' wide, which seems to be too wide for the traditional air conditioner side accordion flaps to cover. The previous owners mounted a steel bar horizontally at the height of the air conditioner, installed the air conditioner all the way over on the right, and then hot-glued a piece of plexiglass to cover the leftmost 60% of the window. It looked crappy, leaked air, and let in more street noise than I'd like. Is there a better way to do it? [more inside]

Which clothing stores in NYC have good casual/business casual clothes for larger men? My boyfriend and I are going clothes shopping this coming Saturday to prepare for an upcoming trip. He has a suit, but other than that, all his clothes are jeans and tees. For this trip, we are looking for: casual button down shirts (oxfords or plaids), non-jeans/non-khaki trousers, a sport coat or blazer, and some shoes that fall in between the New Balance sneakers he usually wears and the nice black shoes he wears with his suit. Sizes and price range below the cut. [more inside]
Hi, wonderful Mefites! I am thinking of driving from DC to New York City for a wedding next Thursday (the 22nd). Google tells me that driving time (from DC to an address on W 159th) is just shy of 4 hours. Considering that this will be a weekend, and holiday weekend, what is a more realistic driving time? My beautiful, beloved cat peed on the couch. Anti-Icky-Poo is failing me, and frankly I'm fed up and just want to pay someone else to make the cat urine smell go away. I'm in NYC. Any recommendations on who I can call to deodorize the couch? [more inside]

I have just learned that I may need to be out of my apartment by the end of the month. I am thinking of a furnished rental for a few months until I've figured out where I want to live next. I have been in this place over 20 years and my head is spinning. I will need to put things in storage, and I have a cat. I am also a smoker. My costs will all be covered for the rental and storage and the moves (both to the rental and the final place I choose). I am in the NYC area. I have about three weeks to figure this out. Help! Advice?
Going to NYC tomorrow afternoon. It'll be raining. I'm interested in checking out small art galleries and boutiques. Where should I go (is there a good online guide) and where should I eat? [more inside]
I'm looking for "hiking boots" that realistically will be used mostly on city streets. I mostly care about walking on slick cement or tile (e.g., many subway stations, fancy lobbies) without slipping, and about stepping into puddles without soaking my socks. A few times a year I may also wear them on a spring or fall day hike, so I'd rather they weren't heavily insulated, but otherwise actual hiking should be a secondary consideration. What features should I look for, and where would be a good brick-and-mortar store in Manhattan to buy them? (I have funny-shaped feet, so I want to try out a few options without waiting multiple round trips for shipping. Also, helpful staff would be a plus.)
My mom's business partner in Asia wants a Statue of Liberty replica as a house-warming gift. Requirements: - Made in USA: non-negotiable. - At least 8 inches tall. - Materials: preferably not breakable. - My budget: $100, although I'm willing to shell out more. Please tell me where I can buy such a thing, either online or in NYC (I'm not living in NYC but my partner is going on a business trip there this week). Thanks a lot in advance.
My troublesome roommate is doing a last minute sublet of her room in our 2 BR apartment for the summer. The sublet seems a little shady to me, as she is not telling management and is just planning to have the renter pay her directly. Am I naive to think she should tell the apartment complex? She is also very behind in all of the bills (cable/electric/gas), so I'm worried about getting her to pay her share in full before the subletter moves in. Help me sort through the legality of all this to avoid finding myself in a bad situation. Also, talk to me about breaking an apartment lease. [more inside]
